Slow season. Nobody wants to do much of anything it seems, all holding to their little part of the sandbox trying to look smart and sharp. You really don't want anything that looks too "busy" or ambiguous. Of course, the jackboot's message is ambiguous (hence why i'm wearing it), but the recognizable star, colors, and shape are very clear.
