Finster Baby Posted March 4, 2009 Report Share Posted March 4, 2009 On 1 March 2009, approximately 11:30pm Server time, IRON's forums came under a coordinated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This attack lasted from that point until sometime the morning of 3 March 2009, when our host's ISP was able to block the incoming attack. Our forums are now operating properly, and it appears there was no destruction of data. [sections of this are OOC, some are IC, should be obvious what is what] IRON realizes that there are entities that do not like us. We have no issue if this dislike is dealt with using IC methods and via ingame routes, etc. However, an attack on our forums is an attempt to destroy someone's personal property, as well as disrupt an ISP, which can cause issues to any number of people who have no involvement. Our server host is not involved in CyberNations, other than to host our forums. These actions are OOC and have been and will continue to be frowned upon. We have our theories and beliefs on who attacked us. However, we won't mention them here. Our host's ISP is absolutely ready to level criminal charges against the perpetrators of this act. And I, along with the IRON Council, have provided whatever info we have regarding this to them. Thank you for your time and consideration. We would like to advise you that FAN's old forms were also targeted in a DDoS just before our expulsion from WUT and the massed attack on us. The timing was precise and deliberate, and the scale of the attack was far more than just a small script kiddie. We also have concerns that the personal information of some of our members was compromised, and that it may have led to some of the OOC attacks and harassment that has targeted our membership. Which, obviously, is a huge privacy issue AND blatantly illegal. We have our suspicions about exactly who perpetrated it, but there are only a very select few groups who would have the motivation, knowledge, and means to conduct such an attack. We would caution you to be extremely suspicious of any entities that fit that profile. Good luck, be careful, and may you bring them to justice. I respect the OP's opinion over the appropriateness of this announcement, but I also completely share ES's thought on the issue: these forums are already cluttered enough.
