Cybernations Academy Awards Winners Announced

Hello, and welcome to the Cybernations Academy Awards. Originally, the Cybernations Academy of Realpolitik and LOLWUT gathers to bestow their honors on worthy moviemakers in our community, but since that is a dead art form, the Academy has broadened their purview to the members of our community. After the disaster of the CN Awards where the host actually said "The Most Hostile Alliance award for 2009 goes to the Mushroom Kingdom. Not sure entirely what they’ve done hostile as of late, but yeah. Congrats!" the Academy knew that their critical minds were needed once more and through secret ballot, we finally have answers to the pressing question: Who was the best in 2009?

Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Pacific News Network, the Academy of Realpolitik and LOLWUT, I give you the second Cybernations Academy Awards, awarding excellence for actions taken between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. Please remember in your comments that the Academy disregarded all actions that happened in 2010.

Friendliest Alliance

Even during wartime, the Order of the Black Rose stayed friendly and after Karma they have been a calming force in the Cyberverse. However, the award goes to the Orange Defense Network. They have a practice of sending a massive wave of diplomats to another alliance's forums for the sole purpose of producing goodwill. This practice resulted in one of their members being elected "Queen of the Orange Team" despite the more active IRON showing up in force to run a candidate and TOP running a far better-known candidate.

ODN - Friendliest Alliance

Most Hostile Alliance

While Athens was a close runner up with their Knights of Ni antics, the winner was iFOK who were a driving force in Stickmen’s move to purple, a move made just so they could get under purple’s skin and hopefully ignite a war.

iFOK - Most Hostile Alliance

Best Diplomatic Team

While New Polar Order had an amazing diplomatic comeback after the War of the Coalition to form Frostbite and other alliances, Argent had the most amazing transformation in 2009, going from under MHA’s boot to an MDP with Grämlins and Citadel membership.

Argent–- Best Diplomatic Team

Best Economic System

Unanimously, the Academy agreed that the New Polar Order had the best economic system of 2009. The Polar economic system is remarkably well-run and is quite innovative. It has launched an alliance ravaged by war to as high as second place towards the end of the year. Furthermore, there has to be something to fund 4600 nukes- coming off next to none after the War of the Coalition.

New Polar Order - Best Economic System

Best Military

Aircastle was a close contender, with many WRCs for an alliance their size with many of them in the same strength band, but the prize goes to TOP, who are, as of 2009, one of the few old alliances with a perfect war record, very high average strength, and plenty of tech to juice those nukes.

The Order of the Paradox - Best Military

Best Recruiting

The New Pacific Order, able to keep their number up during a crippling war as well as crippling surrender terms, almost took this prize, but United Purple Nation’s year-end blitz sealed the deal for them. 186 nations between November 22nd and December 22nd of 2009 is an incredible feat, and they got nearly 100 nations in one week in there. No other alliance all year has come close.

UPN - Best Recruiting

Best Propaganda

Despite their lack of sing-along videos and extremely long-winded speeches, the Academy bestows this award to the Mushroom Kingdom on the strength of their graphics and Archon Essay work. A frequent winner in the Propaganda war thread, MK takes this award with authority.

Mushroom Kingdom - Best Propaganda

Scariest Alliance

While there were many votes for TOP as the remaining Initiative Alliance untrampled by Karma/each other, the New Pacific Order came away with the prize, with Academy members remarking that most events during 2009 were about containing Pacifica, even after their defeat. Their deliberate pace in paying reparations, increasing open world forum presence, and restructuring still had the power to make some corners jump when they said “boo.”

New Pacific Order - Scariest Alliance

Best Alliance Growth

In a first for the Cybernations Academy Awards, the voters split a category, with the New Sith Order and Aircastle tying for Best Alliance Growth. Aircastle had the biggest short-term jump, from out of nowhere to 28 players with almost 60k average national strength, while the New Sith Order had the biggest long-term jump, going from founding to four million national strength in record time. Congratulations to both alliances.

New Sith Order & Aircastle - Best Alliance Growth

Best Rookie Alliance

This was a wide open field, with The Corporation being nominated for hitting one million NS in a few months and SOS brigade for their seemingly effortless climb, but top honors goes to the New Sith Order, who became very relevant very quickly while having spectacular growth and a meritocratic mystique perfectly exploited by their veteran leader Ivan Moldavi.

New Sith Order - Best Rookie Alliance

Most Active Alliance

The Academy unanimously finds that the Mushroom Kingdom is the most active alliance. Indeed, their activity is what necessitated the revival of this organization. They also manage to keep around 70% of the alliance on IRC during update, which is no small feat. As someone wiser than I once said “how do you kill that which has no life?”

Mushroom Kingdom - Most Active Alliance

Most Honorable Alliance

TPF made a very decent run at this award, refusing to leave the Karma field of battle and went to bat for NEW when they had trouble with ZDP. This behavior is now simply expected from this alliance, but the Siberian Tiger Alliance edged them out, honoring their word in the most trying and confusing circumstances.

Siberian Tiger Alliance - Most Honorable Alliance

Best Alliance Flag

While there were mentions for the New Sith Order (The Pacifican Flag with stronger colors), Nueva Vida (complicated, unique, but still works) the Academy declares the Finnish Cooperation Organization Flag as the best in the game. See for yourself.

Finnish Cooperation Oragnization - Best Alliance Flag

Best War Flag

The Academy almost went with the iFOK war flag, but they promptly came to their senses when presented with the majesty of the Carpe Diem war flag. When riding to war, I always take a “My Little Pony®”

Carpe Diem - Best War Flag

Best Forum

The Sweet Oblivion and Polaris were mentioned, but the New Pacific Order, with their monthly skins, historical wings, and innovative badge system, the Pacifican Forum takes top honors.

New Pacific Order - Best Forum

Best Wiki

By unanimous vote, the Academy bestows the title of Best Wiki to the New Pacific Order, who have included articles on their Capital City, pages for their various divisions, as well as an entire division of Pacificans to ensure maintenance of the various pages.

New Pacific Order - Best Wiki

Best IRC Channel

Once again, this was a battle between the Mushroom and Franco’s Star, but in the final vote tally, the New Pacific Order’s #NSA beat out the Mushroom Kingdom’s #mushroom. #nsa is still a must-idle channel and remarkably void of 40-line ASCII mudkips, which may be a benefit or detriment depending on your viewpoint.

#NSA - Best IRC Channel

Most Powerful Alliance

Although TOP was nominated and seriously discussed, the Mushroom Kingdom was declared the most powerful alliance. The soft-power that flows through the voice of Karma rivals any empire in CN history and it may be years, if ever, before a counter-balance large enough to lift Archon’s throne is found.

Mushroom Kingdom - Most Powerful Alliance

Alliance of the Year

A reverse of the Most Powerful Alliance discussion, TOP edged out the Mushroom Kingdom, because ultimately TOP choices allowed it to stay above the fray of the Karma war while gaining some political capital for being present during the OV negotiations and not intervening on the TORN side. Like Sparta, TOP has been able to cleanse itself of its Hegemony Past and take part in the New World Order. Continued careful play in 2010 can see it remain the number one alliance with a growing orbit of protecting alliances.

The Order of the Paradox - Alliance of the Year

Best Alliance Leader

A toss-up between AlmightyGrub and Ivan Moldavi, the Academy had to decide if it was more impressive to rise from the ashes or from scratch. In the final tally, it was determined that AlmightyGrub’s deft and bold political moves with an alliance unpopular on both sides of the fence earn him top honors.

AlmightyGrub - Best Alliance Leader

Most Powerful Player

Although LiquidMercury was mentioned as the man who controlled the militaries of the world, when the votes were cast, Archon was unanimously chosen as the most powerful player. As King, he sets policy for the Mushroom Kingdom and is the de facto leader of a large hunk of the world. Archon sets the bar and alliances happily jump over or limbo under to fulfill his requests. Action in 2010 is expected to revolve around his say so.

Archon - Most Powerful Player

Nicest Player

Voters did cast ballots for Hime Themis and Cora of USN, both known for their respect and pleasantness, but Penguin took top honors with his ability to speak even with trolls without losing his temper or respect for his fellow man.

Penguin - Nicest Player

Most Controversial Player

While Francesca was mentioned as a very controversial player, the Academy realized that when universally despised, you become a unifying figure which is the opposite of controversial (I don’t think anyone rooted for her in the Francesca – TSO war). This leaves Ivan Moldavi to pick up the award uncontested with his ability to make controversial doctrines, call people’s bluff, and be an agent of action in the Cyberverse. Loved by many, hated by most, respected by all.

Ivan Moldavi - Most Controversial Player

Most Active Player

Tygaland and Mack received ballots, but during 2009 it was Doitzel who was appearing everywhere (even in my sing-along war reports). Thankfully, he’s yet to escape from the box I nailed him into for 2010.

Doitzel - Most Active Player

Funniest Player

Although Sir Paul has consistently put out amazing material for over six years, the Academy believes he didn’t start becoming funny until 2010, meaning that Jack Diorno wins by default. Expect a “congratulations article” in the next Tribune Jack!

Jack Diorno - Funniest Player

Player of the Year

Although ballots were casts for Cortath and Ivan Moldavi, Archon was the clear favorite as the voice of Karma.

Archon - Player of the year

Please don't confuse the Cybernations Academy Awards with the CN Awards. Two completely different award ceremonies.

Yea, it turns out that the inverse is true (uncareful play can result in not being the number one alliance)

I love you SirPaul.

That was well done.

Thank you, but I can't take the credit. Most of this were direct quotes from the anonomous, secret and representative academy.

Going to have to agree #mushroom has become the new must idle channel. #nsa is trolled by over controlling no fun ops.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. While I am intrigued by the notion of this "secret academy", I find their choices good (and at least justified) in most cases. Well done and congrats to all the victors.
