[center]So there's this thing called the Schrodinger's cat thought experiment. It was thought up to point out how the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics could at times appear to be out of sync with reality. So here's the idea, you have a cat in a box, as well as some sort of apparatus that can detect a quantum event, such as radioactive decay. With the correct amount and over the right time period, you can set it up so your radioactive material has a 50% chance to produce ionizing radiation. This would be detected by your apparatus and if it happens, poisonous gas would be released, killing the cat.[/center] [center][img]http://i.imgur.com/QKZrE.png[/img][/center] [center]Here is where things get odd, according to the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, until you observe the quantum event, every possibility exists at the same time. Isn't that weird! So by that interpretation; the material has both produced, and not produced ionizing radiation. What of the cat? Until it is observed it could be considered both dead and alive. Of course, you'll never be able to reproduce those results in the lab. A cat won't be dead and alive at the same time, but as a purely mental exercise it's an interesting concept.
