[/quote] 1 rad = 1 rem in radiation measurements; assuming a mix of primarily beta & gamma radiation (which with hot sources, rather than ingested alpha emitters, is a good approximation). A dose of ~600rad has an LD level of above 99 within 14 days; that is to say five minutes exposure at 2rad/sec will kill above 99% of people within two weeks of the dose. It's an exponential effect so 1 minute of exposure at that rate will kill about 10% of people within a month. Both of those figures exclude all the long term cancer effects. Basically it's a lethal flux in real life if you don't get out of the way within a couple seconds, and since it's beta & gamma out of the way means behind a couple inches to feet of lead.
