We find ourselves at the eve of Christmas, and at the third celebration of the birth of Umbrella. Three years ago an ambitious group of people set out to create an alliance: Umbrella. Of course, our journey has been no walk in the park. We've had our problems and as it stands now there are people out there that will try to ruin what we have going for us. Our resilience has guided us through these trials and tribulations. We have rode out the highs and lows of the Cybernations rollercoaster. From our rather humble beginnings as a small isolationist alliance to the top 20 in NS and to making a claim in the sanction race, we have come far. Our determination has been the torch to light the way, seeing us through the darkest of times. The times when things look stagnant and dreary are when one makes the decision to keep going in search for a brighter future.

Umbrella’s successes and failures string on avoiding the ordinary, avoiding complacency, and setting lofty goals. The refusal to accept average is in our blood. We shall always strive to improve and will look to various means of doing so. Personally, I believe that the consistent dedication we have from some at the member level is what has enabled us to thrive. For us, our community is the most important thing, and having a sustainable one has always been a primary goal. As I said before, that hasn’t always been easy, as communities don’t build themselves overnight and are a rather fragile construct in the context of Planet Bob, but I believe ours is stronger than ever. We are steadfast and resolute and will not let yield to setbacks. Today we note that we've exceeded our own expectations, and that is not good enough. Onward.

Happy holidays everyone, and by holidays I of course mean Umbrella's third birthday!

To commemorate this momentous once-in-a-lifetime occasion we are bringing our Umbrella-only contests to the public for one time only with an OWF posting contest! Everyone with a CN:S nation can participate, all you have to do is post on the OWF. But this contest isn't about who posts the most or who can pull the most image macros out of their ass, this is about who the most insightful, funny and/or interesting poster is.

[b]The Rules:[/b]
- Need to have a valid CN nation and Forums Account (Obviously)
- Posts that break the rules (Image-only, making someone click on a gross link etc.) will not count towards winning, no matter how hilarious or awesome they are.
- You need to put something in your signature to state that you are participating (see below for instructions regarding that)
- Only posts made between now and exactly 168 hours from now count towards your score
- Posts only count if they are made in:

Q: How on earth are you ever going to keep track of all posts? The forums are massive and especially with this war thing it's moving really fast!

A: [i]This is where you guys come in. If you spot a post that you like, for whatever reason, you can PM any of the 5 judges with a link to the post and a short (1 or 2 lines) explanation of why you think it's a good post. No PMing in posts of yourself ofcourse.[/i]

Q: Why would we do that for you when we're not getting anything for it? >:(
A: [i]But you are, every valid report you make gets you a couple of points, it's a very good way to boost your score while just reading through the forums.[/i]

Q: What are these 'points' and 'score' you keep going on about?
A: [i]To make this process as fair as possible, we've chosen to go for a points system, and it will work like this:
Every 'good' post nets you 10 points, this is based on a bunch of parameters that I'm not gonna get into but generally if it's interesting or funny you'll get your points. Aside from that, if we find a truly exceptionally good post, the judges will discuss a number of points to give for it on top of the original 10 on a case by case basis. On top of that, all valid reports get you 3 points a piece for a nice score boost.[/i]

Q: Screw quality posting, I'm just gonna cheat!
A: [i]Our judges will do their best to notice any attempt to abuse, break or otherwise game the system, and if you are found to be doing this, you will be immediately disqualified. They have final say in everything.[/i]

Q: Ok so now i've won the contest, what do I get?
A: [i]First of all, congratulations! You are truly an asset to the community. But besides that, whoever has the most points at the end of the week will win a $50 amazon gift card. That's right,

Umbrella and Darkfall have a relationship dating back well before umbrella's birth. Gen[m]ay and Darkfall held a treaty together way back when but then Gen[m]ay disbanded and Darkfall merged to form Darkfist. A few years down the line however, we're both back and better than ever, and what better day to announce it than Umbrella's third birthday. So here it is, the new Umbrella and Darkfall Treaty:

[b]This is a simple script that:[/b][list]
[*]adds average stats to all alliance display pages
[*]allows you to add a flag to any alliance's display
[*]allows you to add any alliance to the pulldown menu

To add a flag to an alliance page, insert the following code in the proper location:

This script works in Chrome and Opera with no extensions and Firefox with Greasemonkey. While it hasn't been tested in IE or Safari, it should work with the IEPro and NinjaKit extensions respectively.

From it's onset Umbrella has been an alliance that has put a heavy emphasis on nation building. In that regard we have been lucky enough to excel over our period on Bob. Umbrella has always put a large amount of time and effort into our tech importation and our tech makes up a good chunk of our NS, over 50%, and in fact this is one of the factors that contributes to our being ~bEyOnD DaNgErOUs~. Below is a graph of our three years of fantastic growth of both our nation strength and our technology. To another three years of growth!

I'd also like to take this time to thank all of those tech sellers that have made this possible. A big thanks to our largest tech sellers in the Basketball Ninjas, the Goon Order of Oppression, Negligence, and Sadism, and the CTF brotherhood.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and filled with great glee,
A small cadre of friends gathered on IRC;
Excitement was high and they spoke with elation
As each of them logged in to his or her nation.
I remember it well, ‘twas two thousand and sev’n,
and our numbers were few; twenty-two plus elev’n.
Our purpose was simple - to do what we must
to stay close as friends in the days post-Unjust.
We vowed to stay unified through the bad weather
and when the sun shined we’d be shining together.
So long we had planned for this day to arrive,
though we did not know how long we might survive;
Our alliance was dead and our nations had scattered,
and we decided that loyalty was all that mattered.
The boards were set up by domisi with care,
In hopes they would use them to plan and prepare;
Soon after, KevinJB sprang to action
and drafted a charter to our satisfaction,
He brought fresh ideas and members aplenty,
without him we wouldn’t have even got twenty!
We picked out a new name that seemed only fitting,
especially with all the rain we’d been getting.
We picked out a launch date: January first.
Paranoid, we were expecting the worst
We made up a nice flag we thought was alright
and strapped ourselves in for a long new-years’ night.
We decided to launch; we were all ready now,
we elected a tri: Kevin, Ocho, and Mao.
But we couldn’t wait! Though we had agreed,
We changed AA early out of some desperate need.
Kevin and Mao were away for the night,
and the group on IRC began to take flight.
We whistled for a cab and when it came near,
the license plate said “Fresh” and it had dice in the mir’r;
And as our RL friends played out in the snow,
We hearkened to cries of “Change AA now GOGOGO!!!”
And now as I sit back and think on those days,
We remind me of children in so many ways,
But as we’ve all grown, we’ve continued to learn
from examples of others and times we’ve been burned;
And though once in awhile we may lose a brother,
through good times and bad we have stood by each other.
And even despite the best efforts of Tela
we made a new name for ourselves as Umbrella
And so I hope, like mine, your hearts have been warmed
By the tale of the night that Umbrella was formed.[/center]

Wow, that's a lot of announcements in 1 thread. :D

Congrats, Umbrella! The first time I ever heard of you, your alliance was still small, but you could see there was a lot of potential. Today, you are an example for other alliances.

Too bad you can't be sanctioned below 200 members, but maybe that'll change some day and I'm sure we'll see you high up in the sanction race then. :)
