The NADC and GDA have been getting to know each other more and more in the past few months. We've gone from being acquaintances who wave to each other in public to buddies who go out for pizza. Based off of our mutual friends in the MCXA and UBD, the NADC and GDA have also found common ground in our FA beliefs, and who we enjoy hanging out with. It is with great pleasure that I get to announce this treaty between our two alliances. Sovereignty[/b] The North Atlantic Defense Coalition and the Global Democratic Alliance recognize each other as sovereign entities. Neither party will engage in covert or overt attempts to maliciously influence the others choices be they in foreign or internal affairs. [b]II. Non-Aggression[/b] No member nation of either alliance will declare war on any member nation of the other, provide aid (be it military, money, technology, or knowledge) to enemies of the other, or commit acts of espionage against the other. If there is a nation responsible from either side that violates this part of the pact, both sides shall work toward a resolution of the matter in a responsible and respectful manner including the discussion of reparations. Diplomatic Relations and Expectations[/b] Both alliances will be friendly in communications towards one another in all public dealings and communications including, but not limited to, declarations on the Open World Forum and in the public IRC channels of both parties. In private, both alliances are free to express their honest opinions. [b]IV. Defense[/b] In the event that one of the signatories of this treaty is attacked, the other party is highly encouraged, though not obligated, to provide any and all assistance including intelligence, diplomatic, financial and military aid up to full military intervention. [b]V. Cancellation[/b] If either signatory alliance wishes to withdraw from this treaty, they may do so by the express will of their respective decision making bodies. What happens within a doubly private setting in an online game does not fit the bill. Certainly, you retain the freedom to speak in any manner you wish, but in this environment, with these social contracts, everybody else has the freedom to act in opposition. You cannot touch without being touched. Perhaps it is the RP nature of this game, where we have "governments" that gives rise to this mass confusion. An alliance here is not equatable to a real nation state. It is a private organization, and if you do not want to be sanctioned for violating its rules, then you should not be part of it. If you work somewhere, and violate company policy by insulting your boss, you get fired. If you are a General, and you insult the civilian leader you work for, you get fired. Freedom of Speech comes with responsibility, and therefore consequences for violating that responsibility. The reason why Freedom of Speech is so enshrined in modern western law is not in order to prevent any form of consequence, but in order to prevent the level of harmful consequence that would make the exercising of such freedom impossibly untenable in the first place.
