Why we Are Losing Players

Ok, so this is my first blog:

In the few months I have played this game, I've noticed a few things; very troubling things that a few people have really addressed.

It regards the way veterans of this game treat new players. From what I have noticed, the older players, instead of welcoming new players into the community; they look down on them and insult them.

Perfect example, I read a blog recently in which a poll was created on whether or not we should drive away a fellow player who's name I won't mention. This player may offend some of you by the things he says, but I don't think it's fair to just drive away a valuable player(arguably) from this community. He isn't even the only example, I'm sure that there are many more out there.

The bottom line is that this is wrong, we all should be more welcoming of our new members. This is From the Mind of Lex Luthor, thank you and God bless.

It's odd really, I'm 69 days old. Luthor is 106 days old, Riddle is 60 days old, longer if you count his run as Winner. Riddle already managed to get a PZI sentence for aid theft which he now has to work his way out of. Luthor of course was going to quit prior to the war due to the fact he'd managed to get on the GOONS enemy list.

I'm larger than both of them combined, I've yet to be bulled or otherwise abused by the community. Rather I posted one thread, which I need to find the time to update, and I've had some nice feedback and offers about how if I find myself in need of an alliance people would vouch for me.

Perhaps taking the time to learn the community standards and the governing mechanics of the game before shooting your mouth off influences how you are treated?

Keep your head down, learn how stuff works, and generally act like an intelligent human being and you will be treated as such.

True, but for me personally coming on the forums is the only way for me to interact with fellow players without joining an alliance.

You're right, but I have a vendetta against GOONS. There is nothing wrong with calling out someone who wronged you.

It's all about how you present yourself. For every new player that gets ridiculed, there are ten that do not. Out of the 10k or so players that play this game, perhaps 2% of them post on the OWF, so the OWF is hardly a good indication of how (any) players are treated. In this forum, most arguments are based on associations with opposing factions. You do not get these types of arguments on alliance forums.

In DT, a high ANS and experienced alliance, you don't find this kind of bigotry, and I'm sure we're not unique in this regard. Every alliance likes to get some new blood that makes an effort to be an upstanding part of their community. Yes, we penalized Tom Riddle for abandoning during war (as well as running off with aid). Since then, we've come to an agreement with him to repay what he took from us, and assuming he stays on track, will lift our PZI sentence. Our treatment of him was/ is completely based on his actions.

There are other newer players we have come to respect and value in our alliance, and this is also based on their actions. Mad Max is one example of this (who has even gotten himself in to a government position), though there are still others who are less active that still contribute to our community.

In other words, act like an ass and you will be treated like one. Show respect and it will be given back. This is nothing groundbreaking or unique. It's true in all walks of life.

This is also true :)

I was wondering when we would have another redundant blog/post like this. Its been too long since the last one. Seriously, you arent saying anything we havent hear before over, and over, and over again in blogs. We get it.

So you should do something about it.

The community is a product of the game. Each alliance is pretty close, the OWF is full of trolls. Because it is neutral ground for a bunch of opponents in competition. In the case of Winner, he gets the response he demands based on his posting and refusal to accept advice when it is given. It seems harsh but we have all watched people who acted very foolish figure out their mistake, eat some crow and be made a better player for it.

If new players are willing to learn and be taken under the wing of older players they will be treated well. If they are unwilling and instead go on tangents they will not be treated well.

But no the OWF posters are not the reason the game is losing players.

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have said that this was the main reason but it is one of the reasons. I mean calling people "noobs", I mean come on man. Give me a break. I understand that there are terrible posters, but we shouldn't just generalize all new players as crappy posters.

We aren't. Most new players don't post here anyway. But those that do, often post statements, arguments etc. about things of which they have no context for idea. You are generalizing the reaction to new players based on a small number of datapoints.

Oh okay, I see what your saying.

Right, the key to success in CN, as in many other things is to watch, learn the ropes and figure out how things work before you start telling others what to do. Could some of the vets be nicer? Sure. But When you have been here for 6 or 7 years, and you know the ins and outs of the game. It is pretty ridiculous when someone like Winner tells you you are wrong about game mechanics, alliance politics etc.

Nah, the community is fine. I think what you are getting at is the learning curve for the owf and cn game mechanics but cn is a simple game so that should be easy. As for the attitude of the way people present themselves on the owf...i guess just try to pick up on what has previously happened. Ask some people who have been in the game awhile(and have been in the back channels to give you a more complete scope) and check the wiki when you don't know something. CN histoire et étiquette has a pretty big learning curve for 2012-2013 new players unfortunately because a lot of what is said(besides hails and congrats) on the owf are based upon past experience in key events(like major wars, polaris going herp derp on allies, etc).

There is also the earning of respect, you don't just show up as a new player posting crappy ass threads and expect to be respected. A lot of respect comes from being in the game awhile, not sounding like an idiot, and doing something in it. Also being in a respectable alliance helps but usually respectable alliance depends on the pov :P

Sad truth is, this game allows only certain gameplay styles. And alliances are one of them, perhaps the most important of all.

You can't hope to be taken seriously when you preach about change from 1-man AAs. Nobody will give you consideration, because almost nobody has managed to attain a sizeable amount of influence from that position.

Join an alliance, prove your worth, and rise through the ranks: it's feasible, it just takes time as in every RL institution made by man.
