Gentle Persons I read each day with interest and intrigue the many posts and threads that the vast and diverse leaders of Digiterra. There is an overwhelming mountain of new post and new threads every day. I find many to be interesting and informative, many on alliances I have not yet heard of or know well. Sadly the very volume ensures I must take the time to edit what I may have time to read and those I must sadly pass on.One may conclude that I feel that all those "worthless" announcements by the many new alliances is clogging up the OWF, this would be far from accurate. Once again tonight as I surfed the alliance announcements briefly hitting each new thread for the information in the OP that might provide insight I came upon a milestone announcement from a micro alliance. With some nostalgic reminiscences I read how this alliance had passed its 100K milestone. I was girded for the inevitable trolling of the micro but was shocked at the nasty and rude trolling. Now I fully appreciate the terrible burden it is for some of these poor overworked nation leaders to have to read through a thread they have absolutely no interest in nor reason for reading but I do worry that they are overburdening themselves responding in such a thought provoking fashion. I note threads of multi-tens of pages where these dedicated individuals will selflessly sacrifice multiple hours to respond on virtually every page with stirring hails or insightful rejoinders of "you stupid". For those then who feel that the OWF is crowded with pointless threads by micro alliances I ask you to consider the number of threads from established alliances or long term nation leaders geared to harassing another, pondering why Digiterra is diminishing, asking whats wrong with their latest oh so noble action or why is another so evil. If these are worth anything then I doubt there is a real problem with a micro posting it had passed 100K. I offer a couple of thoughts. If you have no interest in a thread or the poster DO NOT READ IT. If you read a thread you find distasteful STOP READING and LEAVE. If you have posted more than 4 times in the last 2 pages GET UP AND GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE. It would appear they fall in three basic categories Alliance leadership, Digiterran personalities/ Individuals of note. and Leaders who serve the greater Digiterra. Gentle Persons We read of the great prowess of many nation rulers across Digiterra daily, there are polls and thread dedicated to those nations. Quite often they do however decline into the “our guy” is the best ever. There have been many nations and rulers who have had distinguished careers and they are oft celebrated on these mediums. On September 28 the Nation of Dulra shall be 1096 days old (leap year) and the The Order of the Black Rose has just past its 4 year anniversary. We have tried to celebrate the perhaps more cerebral and genteel nature of Digiterra. We have engaged in combat when required and as a means to an end of ending conflict only. To celebrate the twin events the Order of the Black Rose through its humble servant Dame Hime Themis shall be offering a bounty to those nations deemed to have served their Alliances and Digiterra best by display of those traditions and values we hold most dear. Honour, dignity, civility and service. On the 28th of September we shall be awarding 4 donations to the desired use of those deemed most worthy. The nominated rulers will be viewed and reviewed by you the citizens of Digiterra. There shall be no poll and we shall accept nominations via this thread, directly by PM on this forum, to our nation directly or on our forums. The nation nominated MAY NOT be in your alliance or an allied alliance. Sadly we will disqualify any nomination so related. There may be choices you deem unworthy if so please send to me privately your concerns. DO NOT please post publicly disparaging comments about someone nominated. You are all better than that. Nominations shall be closed 24:00 Server time on September 27, 2010. Please consider thoughtfully those that have garnered your respect. Newer rulers are not exempt but the less service time the greater the requirement for an excess of the other notable characteristics that should be present. Gentle Persons I feel a simple idea has been missed in this discussion. Poaching as defined by the OP may or may not constitute a valid CB but it is most certainly RUDE. I know a unique concept. If you post recruitment messages on the OWF (an advertisement) even in a disbandment thread it may be poor taste but it is not rude. If you target specific nations however then you are giving the single figure salute to the Alliance your are attempting to recruit from and that is rude. Now I am sure that the big bad tough guys of Digiterra will laugh at such a genteel concept but maybe if some of these genteel ideas were carried forward then all our interactions including wars would be more fun for everyone. Good The MVP I would agree if the thread said Middle Eastern based alliance. It is however Arab alliance and the Berbers and Moors were most assuredly that. As to them being not very interesting. I would have to disagree they showed amazing religious tolerance, great advances in science and medicine and remarkable works of art. They incorporated the cultures and architecture of many races from Roman time until the 1300s. It encompassed North Africa and most of Spain. If you have not done so I would highly recommend further study. The Berbers were simply the precursors to what became an amazing Moorish culture.That included old Berber and Arab cultures. In addition you remove much of the RL complications of the Middle East from the table. Gentle Persons If I may once again be permitted to offer an idea or two. For newer nations 1. Add a free zone of 10 days not 5 for new nations in peace mode. 2. Confirm and send to each new nation a nation building guide approved by Admin that removes some of the more nebulous aspects of the earl stage building. 3. Eliminate the ability to choose an AA for a nation less than 11 days old. 4. Offer a direct and automatic link to an OWF forum account as part of the initial nation creation package. 5. Offer a direct link to the Player created alliance thread as part of the initial nation start up package. 6. Prevent any nation from attacking a nation less than 60 days old unless they are under that age themselves. 7. Prevent recruitment messages from being sent until a nation is 6 days old. 8. Provide a happiness bonus for every day a nation is active until the nation is 30 days of age. 9. Change activity from collection of taxes to logging in to the nation. This will provide us a far greater understanding of the true activity level of nations and alliances. 10. Reduce the peace mode penalty during the first two months of a nations existence .For Older nations 1. Allow mentoring assignments. Allow each nation under 60 days to have an assigned mentor chosen randomly from a volunteer list. The mentor would have access to view an assigned nation much as nation sitting but would not have access to actually do any actions. 2. Give access to every nation the ability to purchase nuclear weapons BUT restrict the maximum regardless of to 1 nuclear weapon per 10,000 NS starting with 1 at 0 NS. 3. Reduce incoming and out going war slots. As I had suggested in another thread. 1 incoming war slot and 2 outgoing would make wars, wars not possible curb stomps. Also allows smaller nation to fight larger ones where skill becomes more important. 4. Reduce the effects of anarchy as they stand now the aggressor has all the advantage if they can first strike and knock a nation into anarchy. If we want nations to fight then give them an incentive. 5. Force nation into battle fatigue. No more than 14 straight days of war before they are kicked into an enforced peace mode for 5 days. This would encourage wars to be far more tactical and strategic along with the other recommendations. 6. Increase the maximum aid that may be sent per slot to a nation at war. If a nation is currently fighting they can receive double the normal cash aid only.Make the Federal Aid commission effect one way required. If I have it I can send more. 7. Let there be a rogue designation that prevents a nation from continuing in war. If one senator of each colour agrees then that nation is kicked from war mode to peace mode. 8. Provide bonuses to nations for length of time in game, Infra level, Tech level, land levels but these bonuses may only be sent to another nation not used by the receiving nation. 9.Promote longevity of a nation through OWF and in game awards. Such as a new flag choice, mod for a day , free warn reduction, in game PM signature etc...... 10. Allow the voting for one specific upgrade each quarter. 1 vote for every 100 days of nation existence .For alliances. 1. Approval of any nation using the alliance AA designator or alliance flag. 2. Declaration of an alliance war where more than 5% of nation attack a specific AA. This allows a 5% bonus to all attacks. But a 5% to all counter attacks. 3. Make treaties worth something. +1 happiness for 10 days to an AA that signs a PIAT, +2 for ODP or OAP, + 3 For MDP, MAP or MADP. However no attack possible on that AA until treaty broken. Double the bonus as a loss if the treaty is broken. 4. AA kick for a nation if three designated alliance leaders approve. 5. Happiness bonus for alliances like above for alliance age, number of nation levels, avg nation strength levels, and average alliance nation age for example. Just some thoughts. Gentle Persons The concept of unconditional surrender works in that other realm because even the worst regimes in modern history have abided by at least some of the standards of international law and the unwritten rules of minimum humanitarian standards. Those nations who disregarded these standards later found that individual lives were put to the ultimate risk under judicial examination. Death was a very real potential consequence of the abuse of these rules.Thus unconditional surrender has always had pretty narrow limits on its use.What might be imposed on a nation was while in many cases vicious no nation was eliminated or made to remain in that fashion over a long period. Yes the second great war had some terrible examples but those nations and those responsible were held to strong task. For all the might makes right proponents most modern nations and the vast majority of people in the other realm are convinced of the importance of these rules. In the other realm the loss of ones life or freedom by imprisonment is a meaningful deterrent. Sadly Digiterra by its very nature bring out a more base nature in its interactions. The loss of a ones nations while sad and annoying has zero real consequence to the perpetrator of a crime or abuse. Thus abuse of an unconditional surrender could lead to no more later retribution than the elimination of a nation or nations of an alliance that abused unconditional surrender. As we all know Digiterra has spawned vile characters who have used their nations for purely destructive purposes. Despite elimination they reincarnate time and again and enjoy the perpetual destruction that they wreak on others. In the other realm the permanent incarceration or death of such a charter ensures both the elimination of that threat and the deterrent to others so inclined. Is it perfect? No but one cannot deny it does make a significant difference. Unconditional surrender on Digiterra would thus only work under two conditions. 1. If every nation and alliance agreed on a maximum set of reparations and terms that would be allowed by unconditional surrender. THIS will never happen. 2. If Unconditional surrender is met with the pre-announced victory that has no conditions. This is then a guaranteed so called "white peace" or as the OBR states in its DoWs no reps or conditions will be used once peace is achieved. So Unconditional peace for an Unconditional surrender. I would love to believe this to be possible but reality and history prove that I can assure that only from a alliance who have stood by that style in the past. There may well be alliances who could maintain the morality of such a process and there certainly some very good alliances I might trust with the morality they have proven over time. The problem is Digterra has as a whole proven its inability to turn morally strong precedents into some horribly mutated e-lawyered vile version of that precedent and befouled it to gain some advantage. I have no interest in debating the morality of an unconditional surrender from or to an alliance it is fruitless debate. The pragmatic reality sadly ignored in the debate is that it cannot work in practice in an environment where there is zero real consequence to its abuse. I speak not for my alliance, who for the time I can review have maintained a standard I am proud of , nor other alliances I have watched and reviewed who have shown a history of high standard. I talk for me. Dame Hime Themis and the fingers that type this missive. The higher style of ethics is a personal choice not because it is easy but precisely because it is hard. Pressing that war button destroys armies that may be magically renewed and nations rebuilt with little pain, guilt or true loss of life.Thus allowing things like unconditional surrender may work for a while but some sense of minimum standards gets further lost. Gentle Persons The divine word normally comes in more gentle words and softer tones to us. Who are we however to question the insight of a prophet? The word that speaks to our heart and soul comes from them that have many names. If we see the truth of the words in the magnificent technology, grandeur of our wonders, strength of our towering infrastructure or wonder of the natural beauty of our land of Dulra does it matter where we find the truth or how it is spoken? No we heed the greater spirit of values, honour, peace all while protecting justice. We thank our brother Schattenmann for bring to us his vision.
