Californian
Collapse of Slavic Empire! Yesterday, after much of the fighting in Europe had subsided, the Slavic Empire collapsed and fell into anarchy. Rumors are abound, stating that the leader of the Slavic Empire actually killed a diplomat at a peace conference, however this has not been independently confirmed at this time. As a result of the sudden collapse, Groenlandian troops have been called in to secure lands bordering the Atyrau province of Groenlandia. The population has received the troops warmly, and basic public services such as sanitation, water, and hospitals have been kept operational. Aid is also being moved in. Hans Morgenthau, Minister of Security, stated the move "was non-confrontational" and only meant to "help the people of the former Slavic Empire and Groenlandia." The True European Coalition (TEC), one of the main forces fighting in the recent Nordlandic War, claimed the upper portion of the former Empire however it remains to be seen if troops will actually be dispatched to helped the people and ensure security. Election will be held in three days to determine the fate of the newly held territory. The provinces will be allowed to join Groenlandia or another nation, join the TEC protectorate, or refuse all help. The most popular opinion at this time is to become part of Groenlandia with the ability to branch off into another nation should a strong local government rise. In related news, the Arkhangelsk Accords have been terminated and the city and port of Arkhangelsk, located in the northern part of the former Slavic Empire, is now under the control of Groenlandia. The Groenlandian garrison of 500 troops and the local police are maintaining order, and trade in the port should not be disrupted. While in control of Groenlandia at this time, the city council is actively looking to forge an agreement with any nation that lays claim to land surrounding Arkhangelsk. **CLASSIFIED** Security Department Memo RE: Slavic Empire Southern part of Slavic Empire has been secured. The spread of TEC has hopefully stopped.
Californian
Elections Elections have been held in all provinces of the former Slavic Empire controlled by the FRG. The overwhelming majority have voted for annexation into the FRG while being able to suceed should a suitable local government arise. The Senatus has approved of the incorporation of the following provinces into the FRG: Orenburg, Bashkortostan, Aktobe, Akmola, Almaty, Kostanay, and Pavlodar. A census is currently under way in these new provinces to determine how the 750 seat Senatus should be split. Kray Canal Construction of the canal is approximately 33% complete. Drakorian and Groenlandian crews are working diligently to ensure the completion of this canal. Arkhangelsk Due to the recent collapse of the Slavic Empire and after reviewing the Arkhangelsk Accords, the city and port of Arkhangelsk is now being solely run by the FRG. The military garrison of 500 troops has been put on high alert however there has been no rioting, most citizens are uneasy with the collapse of the Slavic Empire. The city's police and port authority have maintained control and the local government is continuing normal operations.
Californian
Some of the latest from the FRG government... Federal Republic of Grøenlandia Resolution 289C Polar Bear Preservation Act WHEREAS Ursus maritimus, hereafter referred to as 'polar bear', lives and breeds in the Federal Republic of Groenlandia, hereafter referred to as the FRG, as part of its natural habitat, WHEREAS Polar bear numbers have been decreasing at a rapid rate, due in large part to the presence and actions of humans, as confirmed by scientists, including global warming WHEREAS hundreds of polar bears are needlessly killed in the FRG annually due to hunters and poachers, WHEREAS global warming reduces the ice habitat of the polar bear making it difficult for the bears to find food and survive WHEREAS it is the responsibility of mankind to ensure its actions do not negatively affect the survival of living species at a natural level in accordance with world conservation expectations, RESOLVED on the day of our Lord, July 28th, 2009, the polar bear shall officially be considered a threatened animal, entitled to all protection granted to all species considered threatened, RESOLVED legalized killing of the polar bear shall be banned, EXCEPT when said animal poses a real danger to the wellbeing of any human being RESOLVED the Ministry of the Environment shall ensure all proper laws and guidelines concerning the polar bear are carried out to the fullest extent authorized by the Senatus and Constitution. SIGNED and RATIFIED July 28th, 2009 Senatus, under the authorization of Ásta Ragnheiður Jóhannesdóttir, Speaker of the Senatus Ty Eyvindsson, Forseti Henry Smith, Minister of the Environment Court Case: Gregory W. McHooligan vs. The Federal Republic of Grøenlandia Description: The plaintiff, Gregory W. McHooligan, sentenced to death by jury for the $%&@ and murder of 10 women under the age of 17, filed a lawsuit against the Federal Republic of Grøenlandia, claiming that the death penalty is a cruel and unusual punishment and should be outlawed. The High Grøenlandia Court agreed to hear the case and administer a verdict. Decision: 9-2 in favor of maintaining the death penalty as a viable option for criminals. Majority Decision: The Death Penalty is recognized under the Grøenlandian Constitution as a legal punishment to criminals and will retain that position. It is acceptable, should a jury of peers find the accused guilty and deserving of the death penalty, for specific crimes recognized by this court including first degree murder, $%&@, and treason, to have the death penalty administered should it be humane. The FRG offers the guilty a choice of lethal injection, hanging, or firing squad, all choices which have been proven humane. Likewise, the 6 month mandatory deadline from time of verdict to execution has been reaffirmed as humane as it gives the guilty more than enough time to process all appeals. Finally, the conditions of the prisons are considered humane, so long as they provide shelter, clothing, food and drink. As this entire process has been deemed humane, the death penalty is and will remain legal for the forseeable future. Dissenting Opinion: Neither of the dissenting judges wrote a dissenting opinion. Result: Gregory W. McHooligan will be executed by lethal injection on August 30, 2009 at Magical Rainbow Maximum Security Correctional Facility. Since all major threats have ceased, the coastguard and navy wont interfere with your transports. Also if you're still interested in improving relations we'll make arrangements for your ambassador. However You should know that even though we're would love nothing more than to have all Russian territories back within the Tsar's realm, we have no intention of taking anything by force. Californian
Election Results in! The polls were officially closed over a day ago and the results can now be reported with 97% of precincts reporting. There was 79% turnout, with most citizens wanting their voice to be heard. Join FRG: 61% Remain a protectorate: 37% Invalid vote: 2% While passing the simple majority needed, the low percentage to join the FRG was expected by many analysts. The area has previously been controlled by Canada and Osea, two communist nations. Many of the peoples have these old ways firm in their mind and were reluctant to join the FRG. After a vote from the Senatus and approval from the Forseti, the region has officially been incorporated into the Republic. Californian
Massive Works Projects to begin! Autoway Construction Commences! Today officials have officially approved the creation of a series of freeways to be known as the Autoway System. These roads will be jointly built by federal and provincial workers throughout the nation, passing most major economic centers and cities. These roads will have no speed limit however reckless driving is still against the law, and the newly created Office of Autoway System Management (OASM) in the Ministry of Transportation has stated they will create the Autoway Police to oversee and enforce the laws. The OASM has also started looking for bids for at least 300 snow plow vehicles which will be needed to keep the roads clear. They are looking at domestic as well as foreign companies and all interested parties are to contact the OASM. Here is the proposed outline for this Autoway System: The red lines are the Autoway System while the yellow lines are proposed highways.
