La République nous apelle!

The Third Republic was no easy time for France. By far, there were many challenges for France to master, from the worrisome inception as the least of all evils to the World War, times were harsh. But even so, there were those who believed in the République, in the ideals of the revolution. The nation had not yet given up. France... France was the glory of centuries, the splendour and might of a great power, the shining light of freedom and true civilisation. And with an indomitable will, la France had survived the woes of the trenches, had defeated her enemy and thrown back the Germans across the Rhine. Alsace-Lorraine had been reclaimed, as had been the honour of all Frenchmen. So devastating had been the defeat, that the German state in its foundations had been crushed.

But the destruction also was felt by the French themselves, as the war had claimed many sons of the nation, had left widows and orphans, had caused a demographic disaster. What was left of the old world? What was left of Europe, which had been shaken by the most gruesome and brutal of all wars? Little was left. The states had suffered, Europe was on the decline. The French colonial Empire, it had disintegrated almost utterly, France was rolled back to Metropolitan France, it's ancient lands and Algerie.

But amidst the Chaos, France had survived. And it would strive for greatness yet again. Because France cannot be France without greatness.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire recognizes France.

Private Message to the French Government:

The Great War has affected us all, and I am glad to see that the Third Republic has not fallen to these upstart fascists. These strongmen shoot monarchist and liberal alike, and are no better than the communists. While our nations once faced each other in war, this new era calls for mutual understanding. It is the belief of His Majesty that our two nations should hold a formal meeting, specifically to discuss the future security of Europe.

The Polish Governing Junta recognizes the Third Republic of France, and hopes that it has better luck with democracy than Poland did.

"France is saddened by the Polish abandonment of democratic principles, but hopes that such only persists as long as necessary and that no meaningful damage to our relations come of it."

-Louis Barthou, Ministre des Affairs étrangères de la France

Ambassador Lefèvre-Pontalis shall immediatly be dispatched to Vienna. We would welcome any ambassador of yours in Paris and would be willing to discuss your concerns with him, as our nation shares very much concerns on the security of Europe.

Signed,

Louis Barthou, Ministre des affaires étrangères de la France

The Italian government continues to recognize the Third Republic as the legitimate power in France, and would like to remind the French government of our continued colonial aspirations in Tunisia. We will refuse to recognize any attempt by France to recolonize the country.

Lastly, a public notification would be sent to Rome, stating the following.

"The French Republic has had colonial interests and presence in Tunisia even before Italy was a nation state. France will not tolerate any Italian encroachment on our sphere of influence, which we see as rightful given the Berlin conference and prior colonial arrangements which have enabled Italy to gain her colony in Tripolitania in the first place, in return for recognition of our interests in Northern Africa. We would hope that Italy will stay away from our sphere of influence and not burden our relations and the threaten the stability of colonial policy.

Signed,

Louis Barthou, Ministre des Affairs étrangères"

Italy does not recognize claims or diplomatic negotiations made by long dead monarchs of a nation long past. The future of the Mediterranean belongs to the Italian people.

We are willing to negotiate, but Italy has no intention of letting foreign powers dominate North Africa. Our troops and subjects in Tripoli must be secure, and a stable and safe supply line established. Control of the Tunisian coast is central to this strategy. Edited by Fizzydog

"France has no intention to accommodate this Italian colonial ambition, nor will we recognise an Italian hegemonial claim to the Mediterranean. We reiterate however our warning that Italian attempts to integrate Tunisia will provoke a hostile French response, as we see it as an encroachment on our sphere of influence."

Italy makes similar note that any attempt of French forces to seize Tunisian land will be considered an assault on Italian soil. We do not wish for war, but we can not assure our Peoples' safety in Tripoli if foreign governments surround our land.

As the head of our colonial administration lies in Tripoli, the region is critically important for establishment of a strong, secure colonial program; a foreign soldiers, especially of a democratic government, mere miles away from this headquarters is a major security risk and danger.

The Italian government would be willing to partition the country, but will not accept French domination of a territory so close to Tripoli and Sicily, along with its position near a critical supply route.

"France hereby makes it known to Italy that until Italy adopts again a policy of recognising French influence in Maroc, Algerie and Tunisie, France will not be recognising any Italian colonies in Africa. If Italy feels its need to attack French democracy and press a claim for hegemony in the Mediterranean while unilaterally proclaiming to not be bound by past agreements, France shall make a stand against this fascist madness. France sees no reason to take serious a country that cannot even live up to its agreements."

While the Italians ranted on about their completely unfounded claims, the French Third Republic would put on alert the Chasseurs-alpins and the Mediterranean Fleet, so as to prevent an Italian assault on Metropolitan France. Units in Algeria would likewise be on alert, in order to act in case any Italy would make any attempts to infringe upon Tunisia.

With the history between France and Russia it seemed clear with the return of both states it was time to see what was left of that old flame that had boundd the Third Republic and Russian Empire before, as such a message was sent to the French Foreign Minister.

Minister Barthou,

First of all let me say I am glad to see France, while hit hard, has survived the chaos of these last few decades. Decades ago my grandfather and France came to an agreement that would serve the needs of both parties. We are once again faced with a crisis, with our state a fraction of its former self and your own loss of colonial empire it seems it is a time for old friendships to return. It is in line with this that I would like to formally invite a representative from the Third French Republic to discuss the future of Franco-Russian relations.

Yours sincerely,

Natalia I, Empress and Autocrat of all the Russias

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry released a statement on the dispute.

"While we welcome the continuation of the French republic, we express concerns at the colonial ambitions of France and Italy in northern Africa. The threats of warfare over Tunisia concern Egypt, and to us legitimize our concerns about the stability of the colonial powers in Europe. We call for moderation and believe a moratorium on further African colonizing to be in the interest of Mediterranean security."

My first formal act of foreign diplomacy as High King will be to officially recognize the Third Republic of France. I congratulate the people of France on establishing a functioning form of government that suites their needs, something I can relate to having recently announced the unity of Ireland. France and the Celts have, and always will have, a special relationship that I hope we can highlight in the months to come. I also look forward to establishing a form of legislature to better hear from the needs of the people, perhaps my council and I will be able to look at the French model for certain Republican aspects.

God bless your Republic, may you rule logically and efficiently,

High King Aaron Fitzgerald

Protector of The Island

"France thanks the Irish and hopes for good relations. In general however, and for all future correspondence, France is not 'back from the dead' and we need not be recognised like some Balkan breakaway state. France has existed since medieval times and the french Third Republic has existed already for over half a century. We would hope people keep such in mind."
