Bob Janova
You mean your last host didn't allow more than one mySQL database at once? Yeah, it had infinite everything, except for being able to cope with vBulletin
bros
IPB is the way to salvation. No, SMF is. imagine a combination of IPB and SMF holy crap that would be awesome. BacTalan
IPB is the way to salvation. This. Especially when 3.0 comes out. vB's fallen way behind in terms of development progress.. After using IPB for several months on the GDA's new forums, I don't want to ever use anything else. Looking at the vB ACP demo almost make me puke after looking at IPB's. SMF is the best free forum though (though the skin needs to be completely redesigned...) Back on topic: No downtime ftw. it'd probably violate some laws or nature or some bs like that. It'd be too awesome to exist. Meh.. let's try it anyway. VB does a far better job with many things, and vB 4 comes out around the same time as IPB3 I also like vb's admin panel better than ipbs
BacTalan
VB does a far better job with many things, and vB 4 comes out around the same time as IPB3I also like vb's admin panel better than ipbs -vB4 hasn't had any sort of preview released except for the developers explaining what they intend to do with it. IPB3's had two betas released and the preview board's been online for months. There aren't many bugs left in the bug tracker to be fixed, either. I'm guessing that it'll come out 4-6 months before vB4. -vB's ACP just doesn't look right to me. I have the same problems with it that I have with the rest of the forum in terms of overall look and feel and graphic design. vB looks like it's from 2003 or so.. Also, IPB3's ACP adds a bunch of nice AJAX and Javascript which actually make things much, much more functional. vB4's going to have to add a huge amount of functionality to catch up. Who would've thought that this would turn into an IPB vs vB vs SMF debate?
Trouble Terrible
Regarding technical advice, I've used both SMF and vBulletin on rather large forums (larger, I'd wager, than 90% of any alliance forums here), and vBulletin not only scales better but is on the whole much more powerful. Why do you think people are willing to shell out a couple hundred bucks for it? Edit: sorry, totally off topic. Otto Verteidiger
Congratulations! SMF is the best free forum though (though the skin needs to be completely redesigned...) Themes, SMF has many, many of them... Though they are a hassle to customize with your plugins sometimes.

Yes, but most admins don't bother to change them. (And, until recently, there were almost none that worked with the 2.0 series..)

BacTalan
I wouldn't use a release client as a main forum, but that's just me. Definitely not an early one, but the later ones are just about 100% stable. (The RC's are the ones that are believed to be final quality, but they're just double-checking to see if there are any more bugs.) Another example Windows 7 - I'm using it full-time on my main PC, but I wouldn't have dared to do it 6 months ago. It's already at least to the quality that Vista was at when it was released, and I've only had a few crashes in the month or so I've been using it. bros
MK is using SMF 2 RC1 >_> We upgraded to SMF 2 Beta as soon as it came out. Best idea for SMF - Make a theme based off of the default theme. That is what MKs is. Also, SMF 2 can attempt to install on other themes.
