List of the problems with your proposal: 1. Heat is not the only thing that is released when the crystals unwind. The explosion that will result from the unwinding by itself means you're basically dealing with a bomb for your supposed generator. Even supposing the material is turned metastable, there is no current method that will allow you to regulate the amount of energy released, and even if we suppose there is one, what are you going to do about the release of light and other such forms of energy? The notion of "releasing the raw, pent-up mechanical energy in any way you please" is itself a physical impossibility that no sane physicist would ever admit to. 2. Thermoelectric generators using the Seebeck effect is not efficient enough to power the kind of large vehicles you are proposing. They're good for INCREASING fuel efficiency, but to generate the amount of power you're proposing would require massive thermogenerators, making any gain in reduction of fuel size worthless. For that matter, I want to see those sources.
