How are you supposed to protect someone if nobody knows they're protected? That totally defeats the purpose. The best way to protect another nation is dissuading raiders, which you do by putting a notice somewhere that can be found. Once that information is placed somewhere readily available, most raiders should understand that target is off-limits and if they ignore or don't do the simple research then it's their own fault and they must answer for their actions. If a protectorate is totally secret, it's absolutely worthless. It dissuades no one, and raiders who attack invisibly-protected nations are rarely held accountable. So what exactly is the point in a verbal protectorate?

I'm happy that this treaty has made it a matter of official public record that I am an overall cool guy. Rebel Virginia in 5... 4... 3...
