1. Classified Meeting - Somewhere in the Caspian Clique "Gentlemen, I have brought you here today, to put forward a request to you from our top military leaders," said President Sham Dawkins, looking around a group of well-dressed businessmen who sat around table. The industries of the Caspian Clique were just starting to get back into production, and orders were beginning to be fulfilled, but when it came to the drawing board, they were wide open. "General Lowell has reported from the field, in a memo I have provided to each of you, that our vehicles have had to endure unacceptable loss rates due to rocket fire. Mortar strikes have also taken their toll on infantry units, especially when trying to assault fixed strong points," continued Dawkins, who was only wearing a white formal shirt, and tie. The men around the table, most of them his senior, cleared throats, and adjusted their suit coats, a couple whispered to each other. "Mr. President," began Achmed al-Fais, an elderly gentleman with graying hair, the CEO of Near-East Motors. "We have provided your forces with plenty of anti-point-detonate missile defense armor, as you see on this picture of a Yak APC here." He passed a picture of such a vehicle with the corresponding armor kit across the table to Dawkins. "I know Achmed, but we encountered a heavy amount of missiles that could defeat both that armor, as well as ERA kits," responded Dawkins, folding his arms, and leaning back in his chair. "Then what do you want out of us, we have read the report prior to being here, we cannot design an optimum armor kit that can defeat everything our forces will meet on the battlefield," noted Vladimir Rezhov, President of Afghan Metallurgy and Landsystems, or "METaL" for short. "I didn't call you here, gentlemen," said Dawkins, pausing to pick up a few papers scattered in front of him, and arranging them neatly. "As the old adage goes, the best offense is a good defense." "I didn't know it is possible create offensive armor, unless you paint offensive slurs on the sides of our vehicles," chuckled Benjamin Owens, the President of Turkmen Electronics. He got a small guffaw around the table, and even Dawkins cracked a small smile, though he wasn't particularly amused because of the seriousness of the matter. Dawkin's smile faded, as he said, "No, I would like to create a system that defeats missiles on the battlefield, or at least gives our vehicles an offensive capability against them." Dawkins looked over to a military officer standing in the corner, and nodded, "gentlemen," he said, then motioning towards the officer, "this is Colonel Ralawi, he runs the Kabul State Armory." "Colonel," murmured the businessmen, as he sat down directly to Dawkins' right side. "Colonel Ralawi has looked into anti-missile defense systems that are employed on ships at sea, and determined that we may be able to mount such a system on the existing 'Jackrabbit' IFV systems. It would combine a derivative of this maritime CIWS, that stands for 'Close-in weapon system', for practical battlefield use," said Dawkins, passing around pictures of a ship-employed CIWS system. "It would definitely have to be a redesigned system, if it were to be mounted on our Jackrabbits," remarked al-Fais, looking at the photos, but seemingly generally interested. "Of course, but could this missile system defeat a battlefield missile?" asked Owens, looking up at Ralawi. Dr. Katya Petrovich, Head of Kandahar Aviation and Rocketry, finally spoke up from her spot farthest from Dawkins, "Yes, as some sea-skimming missiles can travel in excess of three-hundred and fifteen meters per second. This particular model of CIWS is able to defeat those missiles." "The 20mm Model we are looking into, has an effective range of two miles," remarked Ralawi, pointing with his pencil at Petrovich, who had a doctorate in astrophysics. "Could the engineers at NEM redesign the Jackrabbit around that system?" asked Dawkins, looking seriously at al-Fais. "The height would have to be cut by at least two thirds, and weight by about the same ratio. It would mean the elimination of the 20mm Automatic Cannon as well," replied al-Fais, rubbing at some of the scruff around his mouth. "Would we be able to retain the current anti-tank missile system mounted on those vehicles?" asked Ralawi. "My design engineers can definitely look into that possibility," replied al-Fais, with a shrug. "The gun can be used against ground targets as well, and some penetration power," noted Ralawi, turning to look at Dawkins. "We don't plan to outfit all Jackrabbits to this system, we would allocate a certain number of these vehicles to each battalion," replied Dawkins, nodding. "And you said this system can work against mortar shells?" "With some effectiveness, maybe a twenty percent kill rate?" said Ralawi, shrugging, and continuing, "its main application is anti-missile." "The automation can be handled by Turkmen Electronics, as I assume this a fully automated system?" piped up Owens. "Overseen by a human operator yes, but automatic tracking and operation," replied Ralawi. "Kandahar Avionics and Rocketry can provide you with a team of physicists for the software design, Ben," noted Petrovich, looking over at Owens. "Much appreciated, Kat." "The Caspian Defense Ministry is designating this 'Project Linebacker', I expect nothing but the best from my country's best," noted Dawkins, standing up. "If there isn't anything else, I think this meeting is concluded."

 5.
Dawkins International Logistics heavy transport aircraft en route to Communist Australia. Caspian Military Forces en route to Communist Australia Reginald Burke, Field Reporter Caspian Journal Kabul, CC - Following reports of massive insurgent attacks on government, civilian, and military installations in Communist Australia, President Sham Dawkins, in an unprecedented move, personally ordered a reaction force to Communist Australia. The announcement came amid a press conference late last night, the President said that the massive attacks have dealt a heavy blow to the Oceanic nation's military forces, and its governments' stability. Despite the Caspian military still under formation, and racing to quell an insurgency campaign of its own in the northeast of the country, Dawkins has tasked the Headquarters Platoon, and Bravo Company, 2nd Afghan Light Infantry Battalion, to assist the Red Australian Army (RAA) in its counterinsurgency efforts. "I believe that the intervention of strong international forces to stabilize the Communist Australian State is needed, therefore I will be committing our forces. If we do not stand for our fellow nations of the world, when will they, in our own time of need? We must be proactive in our relations, as a new nation in this world," remarked Dawkins, poignantly. The unique position of Dawkins, as owner of the civilian air-land transportation corporate giant, Dawkins International Logistics, has allowed for Dawkins to provide civilian heavy-lift aircraft for the operation. Dawkins' company released three CT-23 "Skymaster" Strategic Lift aircraft for the mission, along with their flight crews. Dawkins International also has a further three aircraft set aside in the company's strategic reserve for further commitments if needed. Members of the B Company, 2nd ALI Battalion, await their loading process early in the morning at Kabul International. While we were not able to get interviews with members of the 2nd ALI Battalion, a military spokesperson has said that the members of B Company are upbeat about their deployment, many of them having ever been outside the country. Many were rushed north to Kabul International Airport from the closing military operations near Kandahar, and are veterans of the counterinsurgency campaigns around that locale. The three other companies of the 2nd ALI Battalion have been put on seventy-two hour alert, and could be deployed if needed. Bravo Company's 150-man task force has also been provided with twelve NEM "Prowler" light tactical transports, for mobility. The Caspian government has dubbed this stabilization and counter-insurgency force "CASFOR", short for "Communist Australia Stability Force", and personnel are applying these decal letters to its vehicles in-flight. "We hope that this show of friendship and assistance in Communist Australia's time of grief and loss, will prompt swift actions by other nations of the world to join us in the CASFOR Endeavor," said President Dawkins, as the press conference wrapped up. We have yet to garner opinion of the people of the Caspian Clique yet, but it appears that Dawkins feels that the country is stable enough to provide some relief to beleaguered RAA, and its government. A spokesperson in Dawkin's staff has said the president has also sent a personal message of lament and support to the Communist Australian government. The contents of the note have yet to be released. CJ, 2011
Private Communique to the Government of Communist Australia
We in the Caspian Clique extend, again, our deepest regrets for the damage and loss inflicted by insurgent forces operating against the Communist Australian government and its people. We have a rapid reaction company-sized combat force dubbed "CASFOR", en route by air right now to assist in whatever way possible to ensure continued stabilization of your government. We have a further three companies of light infantry available for release, upon specific request. The continued stability of Communist Australia is paramount to the continued prosperity and peace on the continent of Oceania, and the Caspian Clique will provide whatever assistance is possible to the Communist Australian government. Signed with Sincere Regards, S. Dawkins, President Caspian Clique
6.
General Terry Lowell, seen here after his arrival to the Kandahar forward operations base. Lowell appointed as Caspian Defense Minister, as Troops Race North Nataliya Konev, Staff Writer Caspian Journal Kabul, CC - The Caspian Clique has appointed a Defense Minister last night, finally filling this important position, after Caspian General Terry Lowell had a video-phone conference with President Sham Dawkins. While Dawkins has left many positions unfilled as of yet, we believe that he is waiting for this insurgency to be defeated, before he appoints a full government. Lowell, called the "Lion of Kandahar" by some of his troops, has been a stalwart commander throughout the counter-insurgency campaign, which has now moved its focus north towards the border with Shambala. "If anyone is fit for this job, its the 'Lion of Kandahar'," remarked Dawkins, in a phone interview with the Caspian Journal after the appointment last night. This news comes amid preparations for another counterinsurgency campaign, centering around the Baghlan area, close to the Shambala border. Caspian forces are racing north from the Kandahar battlefield, into the area, to assure violence and instability does not spill over the border into Shambala. Lowell has vowed in earlier interviews, to not allow the Caspian insurgency to not spill over into other nations, and destabilize the region. Whether or not this appointment is interim, has yet to be seen, but for the moment, Lowell appears to be taking the appointment in stride, but has yet to relinquish his field command either, opting to direct the counterinsurgency operations himself. Caspian forces are disengaging from mopping-up operations in the Kandahar area, and racing northeast rapidly. Dawkins has said that once insurgent forces are eliminated in this area, he will officially appoint his governmental ministers. As for what we have seen, with the appointment of Lowell, is Dawkins relying on a meritocratic structure on appointing his ministers, and we will probably see more of this style of government appointment once the insurgency is quashed. For the time being, however, we can only guess what the actual shape of this government looks like when the dust clears. There appears to be a lot of anticipation across the country, as they await the end of this insurgency. Reports have filtered in that government inspection teams have been surveying factories and industrial sites, and that the country is readying to hit the ground running once the last shot is fired. Personnel attached to Dawkins' office, have said that amnesty may be given to insurgents, but there are no details on this development, if it is true, it would be an unprecedented amount of trust placed by Dawkin's government in the former anti-government forces. CJ, 2011
7. The Caspian Clique extends its congratulations to the HAE for this significant and laudable achievement.
 8.
A group of Caspian soldiers regroup after a firefight with insurgent fighters near dusk. Caspian Forces victorious in Kandahar! Mike Taillon, Central Asian News Agency Kandahar, CC - Caspian forces, after a week long battle with insurgent forces, have established control over the lawless Kandahar district. With the loss of key strongpoints in the hills, and ever increasing numbers of Caspian forces pouring into the region, many were forced to surrender, some fought last-ditch stands against Caspian military forces. Near the insurgent stronghold of Baghran, Caspian forces shelled the village for almost three straight hours with tanks and artillery before launching a final assault. The fall of Baghran destroyed the last northern stronghold and also wiped out a large supply stockpile of insurgent weaponry, as well as a large insurgent unit holding the town. There are no reports from that area on casualties, however local military officials released the final total casualty figures on the main fighting in the region, which amounted to around four hundred Caspian soldiers and local volunteers. Insurgent casualties are considered to be in the thousands, as reports filter in from the field. General Terry Lowell, commander of the local Caspian military forces, has reported that although this is not the end of the insurgency, the securing of the Kandahar district is an important step in the stability of this nation. "Let me stress that this victory is not final victory, there will be a need to continue our efforts to secure this nation internally," said Lowell, in my interview with him. "We have won the battle, and we will win many more, victory is now not a question of if, but when at this point. Our soldiers have done amazing work here, and will continue to make this country proud, as we stabilize this nation, there will be more blood spilled before all is said and done." A Caspian tank fires on enemy positions in the hills of the Kandahar district, the armored behemoths have been a key cornerstone of the assault forces, particularly in reducing strongpoints. Lowell is probably right in his assumption, as Caspian military officials report that insurgent forces are operating close to the border with Shambala. The Caspian military has vowed to not allow violence to spread over into neighboring countries, and as the battle winds down here, troops are already beginning to pack into trucks for the ride north. A convoy of at least four hundred soldiers was seen racing out of camp, after getting about an hour to rest and eat after returning from a combat patrol in the hills. We can expect to see these quick redeployments continue, if fighting begins to intensify. "We will not allow our problem to become dumped on our neighbors, we will settle this score on our own," remarked Lowell, on the escalation of violence so close to the border. Despite these new reports of escalating violence, we can certainly say that the Caspian Clique is here to stay, after this short, but particularly vicious. Although the troops here have bloodied themselves in the gullies and rocky hills of Kandahar, there is a strong national sentiment here. We have seen citizens of Kandahar come out in droves to hand out food to the troops moving north, calling their thanks out to them, and wishing them luck in their next challenge. The calls of "Hail Caspia" are ringing in the streets of Kandahar tonight, the people of this region have had little to cheer about for so long, the tears of joy are shared by all, as we even see newly battle-hardened soldiers share their joy with the citizenry. "The Caspian delegation thanks the Viceroy and fellow honorable delegates for their kindness. 14. Inigo Wells still had his doubts about going to this celebration, as Sham Dawkins could not attend. A rather quiet man, he was a sound mind, and was about to be named to a post inside the Caspian Foreign Office. A specialist in information breakdown and interpretation, he was going to be appointed to lead the foreign policy unit, which would give direction to the Clique on where it should focus its diplomatic efforts abroad. A personal friend of Dawkins, Wells was doing this as more of a favor to his friend, rather then anything else. As Caspian diplomatic protocol dictated, if there was an open invitation to events like these abroad, a representative had to be sent, it was common courtesy. As his car pulled up to the venue, he was thoroughly impressed, although he was a little apprehensive about the lack of security. Wells target-shot as a hobby, and was a proficient shot with his old Kabul State Armory (KSA) HP-5H. He carried the large pistol on a chest holster, underneath his dinner jacket, along with a line of five magazines that were strapped to the chest holster line. He thanked the driver, and proceeded into the building, and towards the ballroom, his stomach growling as he caught a glimpse of the buffet on the other side of the room. Accustomed to spending the last few weeks in a country that was still stabilizing, Wells felt rather safe at the moment, as the Caspian Clique was still in the process of stabilizing. He put on his best smile before stepping fully into the ballroom, trying to not make obvious his straight path for the buffet with a slow stroll.
 15. "Heavy security," remarked Ving Remhar, a junior member of the Caspian Foreign Office. "Indeed, but what with the violence ensuing here, who can blame them?" noted his counterpart, Matt Owens, another staffer from the Caspian Foreign Office. They passed through the outer security cordon without trouble, showing their Caspian diplomatic papers to the guards. After passing through the body scanners without incident, they were afforded passage into the main hall where proceedings were taking place, arriving early enough to hear a second to Scotland's application to the Federation. They took up seats in an empty lower bench, where they could observe the proceedings accordingly. Both opened their pendaflex binders, which had been ruffled a little by one of the guards, but its contents remained unharmed, and took out notepads, and started their note-taking.
 16. The honorable government of the Caspian Clique extends its deepest condolences to the Government of Mexico, and all individuals and families involved in this tragedy. It also extends the hope that the party who perpetrated this disaster, are quickly brought to justice for their heinous act.
 17.
Caspian Artillery in action at "Camp Apache". Caspian Forces turn up the Heat on Anti-Government Forces Reginald Burke, Field Reporter Caspian Journal Kandahar, CC - Military Commanders in the Kandahar district are putting further pressure on insurgent forces after the arrival of further troops and heavy equipment over the past forty-eight hours. Reinforcements from Turkmen Province have been seen pouring down the main northwest road, Transnational Route 3, in ever increasing numbers since Tuesday. Caspian government officials say they expect to clear the hills north of Kandahar by the end of the week, and should have full control of this area by the middle of next week. "Camp Apache", or the Kandahar Forward Operating Base, of the Caspian Army, has increasingly become busy, as more command and control is established, and more troops arrive. Although the appearance of the Caspian Army, with its motley collection of differing uniforms, and weapons, has yet to improve, discipline and unit structure appears strong and unwavering. Sustained gunfire and explosions can be heard from the hills north of the Camp, throughout both day and night, echoing down through the narrow gullies and valleys that pockmark this land. Military commanders are still refusing to allow journalists into the warzone, insisting they stay at Camp Apache at this time. We have learned they are now actively stopping journalists, who are trying to venture into the battlefield on their own. This is following the reported death of a foreign journalist in the war zone, the military says it will be evacuating his body to Camp Apache as soon as it is possible. We were able to talk to Major Muhammad Gheit, commanding two companies of infantry that were preparing to march into the fray. "Journalists have no place in the battles north of here, I mean that inoffensively to you, of course, but they just don't belong up there. The Caspian military is imposing these limitations for a reason, your personal safety. What would the world say if we allowed another journalist to be killed?" Although some human rights groups have voiced their concern over the Caspian military keeping journalists out to hide possible war crimes, local military commanders say that international and national laws regarding treatment of enemy fighters are being stringently observed. We have seen captured insurgent troops being tended to at Camp Apache, and given ample food and water, and any wounds treated. It appears, for the moment, at least, that Caspian forces are conducting this war by the book. The first Caspian tanks move up into the combat zone upon leaving "Camp Apache". The Caspian military has also deployed its first armored units into the battle, with a platoon of six armored vehicles rolling north to give heavy support to embattled infantry units. The arrival of armored units in the battle is putting increasing pressure on the insurgent forces, who have no armor of their own. The military is reportedly planning to use the tanks against a key position which has held up Caspian forces trying to eliminate enemy resistance directly north of "Camp Apache". The Caspian military has vowed to eliminate all forms of hostile resistance to the new regime, and will ensure that stability in this region is assured. As one Colonel, who wanted to remain anonymous, told us, "the Caspian government is here to stay, and we are too. This insurgency promoting continued instability in this country will be reduced to ashes, and out of those ashes, our country will rise, this is a defining moment in our new history. An old book is being closed, and cast aside, we are writing a new history, that begins here, in the hills north of Kandahar." CJ, 2011.
18. Although the ongoing strife at home was dictating significant attention, President Sham Dawkins felt that as part of his duty to his country, was to attend the Winter Ball. A man that was trained in business, Dawkins knew the value of keeping up appearances, and to refuse such an invitation was, at least what he felt, a diplomatic snub. His closest advisers had encouraged his attendance, and had seen him off, he would return in the same night. His private jet touched down at the Pushkin airport without incident, he admired the long rows of other aircraft, from various other countries that lined the tarmac, before stepping into the chartered car that would take him to the Peterhof. It seemed so peaceful here, with a light snow falling, the countryside glazed with the whiteness of winter. So much different from the dusty nature of the Caspian Clique, it was a whole different world. The ride would give him a quiet moment to reflect on his short term as a leader thus far. Things had been going well, but there was still much to do; maybe he could garner some outside support in trying to accomplish his goals by being here tonight? While Dawkins' finances were well taken care of, rebuilding and establishing a nation took capital, capital that could come from abroad. As the car splashed through the slushy streets, and he had his first view of the Peterhof, he was astounded by its glory, its splendor. When he arrived at the gate, he produced the invitation from his front pocket, to hand to the guard, with a small smile. "President Sham Dawkins, of the Caspian Clique," he said, the Russian rolling naturally off his tongue.
 19.
A Caspian Soldier heads out on patrol from "Camp Apache". Caspian Forces Battling Rebels North of Kandahar Mike Taillon, Central Asian News Agency Kandahar, CC - Although having declared the independence and existence of the Caspian Clique, Sham Dawkins, newly-proclaimed leader of this once, and seemingly still, lawless land, still has a tall order ahead of him. Forces loyal to Dawkins have been engaged in a series of heavy firefights north of Kandahar over the past twenty-four hours, with gunfire echoing through the hills here. The forward operating base for forces loyal to Dawkins in this area, Forward Base Kandahar or as the troops call it 'Camp Apache', is the furthest journalists, both domestic and foreign are escorted or encouraged to go, at least with the troops. Although local military commanders are saying they will not inhibit journalists from traveling north into the hills, they are strongly urging journalists to stay put. The military will not be responsible for journalists, and say that correspondents are, at this time, a liability to the troops. Despite the haphazard appearance of Caspian forces at this time, a ragtag group of soldiers, with various uniforms, and weapons, the forces that have pledged their allegiance to Dawkins appear to have strong cohesion, and discipline has been kept. We were able to get an interview with one Sergeant, who had drawn his stripes on the side of his khaki overcoat with a permanent marker, who was upbeat. "The only order we remember came from Sham's father fifteen years ago, and what he did for this country, it was stable, that is, until the month leading up to his death," the Sergeant said, only giving his name as 'Anatoly'. "Since then, we have only known disorder and strife, and bloodstained ground, warlords fought other warlords, but no one could gain an upper hand. The days of those warlords are over, we will hunt them for what they have done to this nation, and we will send them to their graves as they have sent so many others." Despite the dangerous and rough nature of this country, sentiments like these run deep with many of the soldiers we've spoken with here today. Recent mortar attacks in the past day on this forward base have been responded to with vigor, as the few artillery pieces available here, return fire for these nuisance attacks. Despite some heavy mortar shelling, troops remain disciplined, and respond accordingly, treating these attacks as if they were an everyday occurrence in their lives. Local military commanders have not reported on casualties, but the bits and pieces we have been able to gather do paint a bloody portrait of the running gun battles that have been occurring over the past twenty four hours. We have seen at least twenty to thirty wounded return from battles in the hills near this area, but no definite number is actually available. Local military commanders, however, have released information that at least fifty to sixty insurgents have been captured and detained, and we have seen a number of them pass through here recently, escorted by smiling pro-government soldiers. Control of these hills is vital to the administration of this area, if anti-government forces are able to maintain a toehold in this area, they can threaten the main highway into Kandahar and points south. Presence of insurgent forces can also threaten direct aerial routes from points northeast, and force aircraft to loop to the southwest before flying on Kandahar, increasing flight times. There are more reports of fighting in the northeast corner of the country as well, but local military leaders say that Kandahar is Dawkin's main focus at this time. While Dawkins might have a long road of establishing total stability in this land, it appears for, at the moment, he has the right people following him. 20. 0448 Hours Although first flight, 29th Tactical Strike had been expecting to depart on routine patrol, the minute the alarm buzzer signaling a scramble initiated, they were running from their prep room. Among them, Andrea Thatcher had been one of the first out the door, sprinting for her aircraft. The aircraft had been ready to go for the past half hour, despite that, the sudden urgency seemed to make the entire scene into chaos, as ground crews rushed around the aircraft, and pilots half-dived into their seats. Within five minutes, the six TF-111H were in the air, and were about to cross over into the Gulf of Maine, as they passed the coastline, a voice crackled over the radio. “29-1-1, 29-1-1, this is Cloudy Day, report in over.” “Go ahead Cloudy Day, this is 29-1 Waxer, reporting in,” replied the flight leader, who the younger Thatcher flew as a wingman for. “We got you on our scope now, and your feet are wet, we’re sending you scramble coordinates now, you are to proceed to those coordinates, at all haste, and prepare for attack runs if necessary,” replied the technician aboard the AWACS aircraft. “Once on station, you’ll be taken over by the on-site mission leader, codename 'Sneaky',” continued the technician. “Good luck, Waxer, knock ‘em dead.” “Copy that Cloudy Day, this is 29-1 Waxer, we’re gone,” replied the flight leader, who put the throttle down, followed quickly by the other five aircraft. “Time to destination, twenty minutes.” *** *** *** Six helicopters had left Task Squadron 26, as soon as the message had been received, heavily laden with a boarding party from the task squadron. The lead helicopter, and MUH-60 carried eight sailors, dressed in black, ready for combat, while three of the versatile light utility helicopters carried four similarly dressed sailors. The other two light helicopters, were configured with gun and missile pods, the six craft plowed through the early morning air, as they raced northwest. In the lead helicopter, the lead boarding party peered between the duo of pilots in the cockpit. “How we doing Richards?” asked the officer, patting the pilot on the left on the shoulder. “We got at least a good fifteen minute ride here, hopefully the fighters will be on station and ready to assist,” replied the pilot. “They better be, or we’re toast if they decide to start shooting at us,” replied the boarding party leader. “Hold onto your helmet, Mac, we’re going to hit the deck.” The pilots of the helicopters put their craft into a dive towards the water, and then leveled out, the maneuver hopefully putting them under radar surveillance. The boarding party leader turned back to his main assault team and opened his local commlink to the rest of the party, riding on the light helicopters, and nodded, “Remember boys and girls, this is a hostage rescue, don’t pop the first thing that moves. Intelligence has the crews being held in the mess halls at the moment, there is expected to be at least fifteen to twenty soldiers on board each ship. We sweep and clear all three ships once we have control of the bridge.” “Aye aye, sir!” called out the members of the boarding party. The sun’s first rays were starting to hit the horizon, the deep purple tint that were on the clouds were interlaced with red as the helicopters caught the first glimpses of ships’ lights to the northwest. As a couple of the pilots noted the visibility of the lights, the apprehension in their voices was evident. While the helicopters had some offensive weaponry, if the strike fighters didn’t arrive on time, they were at the mercy of short-range anti-aircraft missiles from both the patrol ships and corvette. They also faced the mercy of the deck guns on all three vessels, as well as any handheld missile weapons that the CNE forces could bring to bear against them. The lights on the ships, and the time to begin the rescue, were drawing nearer, they could no longer see the lights of their own ships they had launched from, they were alone, for the moment, as they drew closer to uncertainty.

The transport aircraft touched down on the rough airstrip heavily, it may have not been the ideal landing spot, but it was one nonetheless. The main airport in the area had yet to be taken by the government forces that sworn an oath to the man who stood near the back ramp of the aircraft, so this would have to do. Soon the airport would be secure. What good was such military transport like these if they couldn't take the occasional jarring of landing in such places? The aircraft sent up clouds of dust as it slowly taxied to a halt on the secondary airstrip, which, despite its remote location, had drawn a number of people, having traveled to see their the son of their last legal leader return. A bloody coup had seen his father executed at the hands of splinter groups, arisen from ethnic and religious tensions in the region. He had been successful elsewhere in life, but now it was time to return home, to his people. The back ramp of the cargo plane slowly lowered, and Sham Dawkins, walked off, followed by a small contingent of body guards. There was a general cheer and clapping that rose from the crowd, as Sham slowed his pace, wearing heavy boots, and light khaki military-style pants, his light blue shirt was tucked into the pants, and he wore a white multi-pocket vest, sunglasses covered his eyes. A baseball cap that covered his head made the back of his hair "ducktail" through the hole in the back of cap made by the adjustment strap. He called aloud to the crowd, "My friends, my countrymen and women, I am ecstatic for your journey to greet my return, and appreciate your support! We shall build this nation once again, on a basis of respect for man and woman, on religious, ethnic, and socio-economic tolerance. I expect us all to weather what may come in an uncertain future, but with your support, we will once again make this country a great example on the world stage once more! To you that have greeted me, and to the world as a whole, I give you, the Caspian Clique!" "May our future be a bright light, to those that have had to live in this darkened land for too long!" he declared, before bowing his head. He quickly proceeded to move on, ushered by his bodyguards, to a waiting convoy of trucks. He still had his enemies in this land, and security at the landing area had been as tight as a backcountry airstrip could be. Soon, he would be able to offer his people more then just a few words, but the country had to be made safe, first.
 24. 0425 Hours, June 14th, 2013 Gravesend Thatcher had been woken at 0425 hours, by one of the military aides attached to his personal staff, had apologized profusely for waking him for a couple minutes, which had to be waved away as inconsequential by Thatcher. He stepped down the grand circular staircase that led into entrance hall of the presidential residence; a couple of the staff was running around, mess clerks getting an early breakfast ready. Standing in the entranceway was Hamilton, along with another officer, Admiral Rex Billings, the Naval Forces’ Chief of Operations, in the navy’s usual black uniform tunic. Billings, much more then Hamilton, looked terribly exhausted, his face was strained, and dark circles under his eyes, his dark hair flecked with much more gray then Thatcher. He had been in the Naval Forces for a long time, and had been one of the few service chiefs to stay in his position for more than one term. Usually the service chiefs lasted for only a two year term at a service chief position; Billings was now on his third term as the Naval Forces’ leader. Under his leadership, the Navy had enacted a series of reforms, and new training programs that had enhanced performance, tactics, command and control, and combined arms operations. “Sorry to wake y-,” started Hamilton, his tone apologetic, he looked as though he had not slept much that night either, Thatcher held up his hand which stopped Hamilton’s words. “I don’t need apologies, Walt, part of the job,” said Thatcher, ambling down the stairs, as he tightened the belt on his evening robe. “The lieutenant told me it was urgent?” “Yes sir, I got a transmission from the sub Phantom about thirty minutes ago, and caught a helicopter out here with Hamilton,” noted Billings, as Thatcher hurriedly walked across the entrance hall, towards an elevator door. Billings and Hamilton both followed him quickly, as Thatcher punched the “down” button, the elevator making a “ding”, and the door opened. “What happened?” asked Thatcher, as he stepped into the elevator, hitting the floor level ‘B5’, Hamilton and Billings stepped into the elevator with him. “The Confederation boarded one of our container ships, looks like they’re going to impound it,” responded Hamilton, the door closing behind him. “They also took control of two Brazilian-flagged ships, as well as one from the Federation of Archangel, and it looks like they’re also being towed towards Confederation waters,” added Billings. He sighed, and continued, “One of the Brazilian ships is already in Confederation waters, but our container ship is being towed in a convoy with the Federation and Brazilian ship.” “How far are they from Confederation waters?” asked Thatcher, as the door opened, revealing a small command center, buzzing with activity. “Fifty nautical miles,” replied Billings, as they stepped off the elevator, a guard at the door stiffly raising his assault rifle to ‘present-arms’ as the President and two officers went by. “Morning sir,” said Commander Marcy Nellis, a petite middle-aged, brunette who ran the President’s war room. She stepped forward to greet him, and gave him a quick salute, like the service chiefs, she looked exhausted, but her usual bright and positive composure was unwavering. “Marcy,” nodded Thatcher, “I thought Lieutenant Collins was to take over for you at midnight?” “Collins will take over for me at noon, I was betting on this being an eventful night,” responded Nellis, as a Corporal set a tray of three cups of steaming coffee on a table next to the new arrivals to the war room. “Thank you Evans,” she said, as the corporal smiled, and departed quickly. “Very well,” said Thatcher, thoughtfully. “What’s the situation?” “I got a secure line with you to Lieutenant Commander Riley O’Neil on board the Phantom, I thought you’d rather take a direct briefing from him.” “Of course, thank you, Marcy,” replied Thatcher, as they walked over to the ‘war table’ which was a high-resolution LED screen that showed, at the moment, a blank map of the region. At various places around the table were phone sets, and Marcy looked over at a male officer who was overseeing communications. He looked back and responded, “Commander O’Neil is on secure line four, ma’am.” Nellis nodded, and hit a button on the phone set, and said, “Commander O’Neil, you’re on speaker with President Thatcher.” “Morning Commander,” said Thatcher. “Good morning, Mr. President, it’s an honor sir, I wish we were speaking under better circumstances,” came the reply through the speaker. “As do I Commander, give me a sitrep.” “About forty minutes ago, a CNE patrol ship was able to force one of our container vessels to heave to, and boarded it with a party of fifteen sailors. They then took over control of the ship, which sent out a distress signal, before communications were shut down. They have joined a convoy of two other merchant vessels, which are being sailed under their own power towards Confederation waters,” reported O’Neil. On the ‘war table’, symbols for three merchant ships appeared, as a technician stood nearby, punching in the approximate positions of the ships as reported on a keyboard. “The two other vessels are flagged from the Republic of Brazil and Federation of Archangel, all of them boarded and crewed now by CNE sailors. They are being escorted by two Confederation patrol ships, and a Noble class Heavy Corvette,” continued O’Neil, the positions of the Confederation ships now appearing on the ‘war table’. “Alright, is there any sign of any other Confederation ships in the area?” asked Thatcher. “No sir, but we have picked up some chatter, and there could be a task force of Confederation ships, strength unknown at this point, sailing to meet and increase the escort force surrounding the ships.” “Any idea on where those vessels are, Riley?” asked Billings, breaking into the conversation. “We believe that they are still about eight nautical miles away, more than two and a half hours away, sir,” responded O’Neil. “We are trailing the convoy at about half a nautical mile due northeast, running parallel with them.” “Thank you, Commander, continue on your course for now, and await further orders,” said Thatcher. “Will do sir, O’Neil out,” responded the sub commander, and the line went dead. “What are our closest naval units?” asked Thatcher, turning to Billings. “Task Squadron 26 proceeded from the Exclusion to that area last night, and has been on communications silence since; we relayed a message to them as soon as the merchant vessel was taken. They have since turned to pursue, and are twenty-five nautical miles to the southeast, and gaining,” responded Billings, nodding at the tech, and the ‘war table’ map adjusted to show the position of the squadron of six ships to the southeast of the convoy of impounded merchant ships. “Three Corvettes, two frigates, and the destroyer Blue Hill, under the command of Captain Will Lee,” continued Billings, looking up at Thatcher now. “They have an MUH-60 Cormorant helicopter, plus LUH-45C light helicopters available. Boarding parties are available to move on command.” “Air units?” asked Thatcher, looking at Hamilton. “We have whatever is airborne and patrolling the border of the exclusion zone, but the tactical strike fighters are about to change shifts, and they are low on fuel, and refueling will take at least forty-five minutes total. The 29th Squadron’s 1st Flight is prepping to take off from Roseway right now, if they go supersonic, they’ll be able to reach the area in less than that,” responded Hamilton. Thatcher leaned over the war table, his eyes looking over the situation, the indicators slowly moving, the convoy of impounded ships slowly moving towards Confederation waters. Billings and Hamilton looked at him, their tired faces full of apprehension. Many of the personnel in the war room were awaiting orders, and many were looking at the President . “We have to assume that those ships are not going to stop, Hamilton, I want those tactical strike fighters scrambled, now, make sure to have an escort for them as well. They will proceed to the area, at all speed. I want boarding parties in the air from Task Squadron 26, Billings,” said Thatcher, pausing for a moment, then continuing, “once the tactical strike fighters are in the area, the Blue Hill will broadcast on open channels that the convoy must stop, and those vessels evacuated of all CNE personnel, and the crews given control, or else be considered hostile.” “Yes sir,” responded Hamilton and Billings, and they went over to communications stations to relay the orders to the individual units. “Marcy, I want a secure message transmitted to the Foreign Ministries of both the Republic of Brazil, and the Federation of Archangel.” Five minutes later, an urgent message arrived in Brasilia and Arkhangelsk, which read.
ATLANTIK FORCES IN POSITION TO INTERCEPT BOARDED MERCHANT VESSEL CONVOY, STOP; TIME IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE, STOP; SAFETY OF MERCHANT CREWS PARAMOUNT, STOP; CNE NAVAL VESSELS AND PERSONNEL RESISTING ORDERS TO RELEASE BOARDED VESSELS WILL BE NEUTRALIZED, STOP; VESSELS OF REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL AND FEDERATION OF ARCHANGEL IF FREED OF CNE CONTROL TO BE RELEASED TO RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES UPON SAFE EXIT OF AREA, STOP.
