Mars Protocol:

Due to hostilities on earth, particularly in Europe. The heads of the government of Druk Yul are to be transported to Mars Colony 1.  The Emperor's family and non-military executive staff are to be launched immediately. No public announcement of our claim to the planet will be made. Tanks and heavy vehicles, the first of their kind on mars, have also to be launched shortly after. The supply ring is to be steadily expanded to a 20 year provisioning to permit long term sustainability of the colony. Colony should be self-sustaining in 5 years, at which point the planet shall be renamed, "Dragonisia II".

Little to the world's knowledge, the colonization of mars was already well under way. An extraction facility was being built near CH4 out-gassing deposits. A colony base was set up nearby that held a small military outpost with guns configured for mars operations. A colony base was in Hellas Impact Crater, one of the few places on mars where atmospheric pressure was sufficient for liquid water to form outside without sublimating. All the facilities were running on nuclear reactors which were also being used to begin the slow process to terraform the atmosphere. As forge operations ramped up, equipment would be built to start mining a nearby uranium deposit to keep the reactors going indefinitely, that was going to take a few years time.

The colony was responsible for keeping them all fed, the extraction facility for keeping them all fueled, the base for keeping them all safe. In secret, Indra taxis had been moving people to mars for months.. the population of the colony was now up to 5,331 persons held in an extensive compound made up of modular structures in similar construction to the orbital stations.

Excerpt from FBC Television, 6:00 news - "With Druk Yul dissolved and the status of the international space program using Druk Yul hardware uncertain, the Atlantic Federation Space Agency has begun planning a mission to evacuate all consenting personnel from DS-1. Given that AFSA lacks a manned space program, it has contracted Atlantic Airlines to use one of its Orion spaceplanes - meant for orbital tourist flights - to evacuate the station at some point. Depending on the willingness of Federation citizen Dr. Mansfield and his crewmates to leave their projects behind, as well as the level of need for evacuation, AFSA has set no timetable for the launch. Orion A-004 is in the process of being prepped to be transferred to Garneau Launch Centre in Nova Scotia."

------

AFSA prepared a press conference in Ottawa for its director to address the matter. "We are in contact with Dr. Mansfield onboard Druk Station 1, and he has confirmed that no emergency exists at the current time. DS1 is well-supplied, and this is not intended as a rescue mission, but rather an option to evacuate the station if needed in the absence of Druk Yul's large space program. Our greater concern is the future of the international moon base, where three people including a Federation citizen remain with adequate consumables to last a long-term mission, in accordance with Druk Yul's plans. However, neither AFSA nor the private sector in the Federation possess the capability for a moon landing, and if it turns out that a rescue is needed, we will not be able to effect such an operation by ourselves."

On DS-1, at least in the Federation module, life wasn't much different. Mansfield continued his daily routine, observing microgravity experiments sent up by universities and corporations throughout the Federation, keeping the lab module clean and free of debris, sharing meals with the DS-1 crew, and taking pictures of the Earth. While troubled by the collapse of Druk Yul, he wasn't concerned for the station or for the crew - if anything happened, a spaceplane would be by to pick them up before long.

On the moon, Melissa Mays was definitely troubled by the situation. While they had plenty of fuel and supplies, the mission commander was from Druk Yul, and if anyone was to abort the mission, it was him. She couldn't in good conscience fire up the engines to take them back, and if there was an emergency, they wouldn't be getting much help from mission control. Science projects and maintenance took up most of her time, but she usually found time to glance up at the blue marble and wonder when she'd be getting back.

Top Secret

A radio transmission came from mars to Melissa Mays. "You don't need to evac... we'll send you provisions periodically." Came an unidentified voice over the encrypted radio waves.

A command module bearing strange markings would land next to the Lunar module. It was remotely manned, and full of supplies.

"We have abandoned Earth, not the Solar System."

"Dr. Mansfield, it has been nearly six months since your departure to DS-1, and you are nearing the cutoff date for your assignment as set forth in AFSA manned spaceflight regulations." The voice of the deputy director didn't please Mansfield; he wasn't an insolent child.

"I have plenty more work to do with the experiments the Orion sent up, I can't leave now." The director didn't budge. "This is not something the agency is willing to negotiate. You're being recalled, so pack your things and secure all critical experiments. If all goes well, you'll be back in the Federation with all recoverable experiments by the end of the week." Mansfield nodded. "Okay. But with the debris field, that's a big if."

"If it'll comfort you, know that AFSA has determined that the field does not make spaceflight unfeasible, simply risky. The Orion should be by tomorrow. Be ready."

The next day, the Orion spaceplane which had been standing by at Marc Garneau Launch Centre took off from its launch pad, and carefully attained orbit. After a few burns to match its orbit to that of DS-1, it drifted closer, while the suited-up crew from Atlantic Airlines waited tensely. They couldn't see very much, being on the dark side of the Earth, and kept their eyes on the instruments, as well as the nearing form of DS-1. Within a few minutes, they had safely docked, and had half-expected to be locked out when the airlock lights flashed green. Soon enough, Mansfield's face was visible through the now-open hatch, and he began loading in experiments which could be safely recovered. The flight attendant, who also doubled as a trained cargo loader, helped him secure the stuff in the back of the cabin, where around half of the seats had been removed to make room. "I was beginning to think you'd never get here," he said, and after one last look at the interior of the station, climbed in. "The controls have been set on a delay to allow us to undock thirty minutes from now."

That gave him enough time to put on the pressure suit the Orion had carried, in case they hit debris - the suit was interesting in that it had a parachute in case they had to bail out. The hatch was sealed, and the cargo loader put hers on. They strapped into their seats, and by the time they finished the undock checklist, the delay had taken effect and the station severed its connections with the vessel. Once the Orion did the same, they were off. The deorbit was mostly uneventful, until just before reentry.

Mansfield was about to say something potentially humorous about an in-flight movie, when a thunk resounded through the vessel and something shook. Mansfield's first reaction was to panic, but his Druk Yul-provided training kicked in and he calmed down long enough to check the pressure gauge on his suit - the flight attendant did the same. They exchanged glances and gave each other a thumbs up - their suits weren't punctured. He looked out a window and saw the stars spinning, then felt a shift in weight. The stars slowed down, and Mansfield decided to wait until the RCS had finished killing their rotation before using the suit's radio to contact the crew. It seemed they had the same idea, and it wasn't until the stars stopped spinning that he heard a crackle on the radio. "Everyone alright back there?" Mansfield replied in the affirmative. "Mind if I ask what happened?"

"We hit some debris. I've notified mission control, and they don't think it'll affect the mission if we make it quick. We're losing pressure in the passenger cabin." Mansfield silently cursed whoever was insane enough to attempt to sabotage future space exploration by deploying that field. When he remembered it was probably his colleagues in Druk Yul, he decided to focus on the imminent sunrise, and the sight of the Earth getting bigger beneath them.

Before long, the blackness of space turned to blue, and they were flying over the Federation. Like every Orion flight before it, the evacuation mission ended with the craft landing on a runway at Montreal-Trudeau Airport with airbrakes flared out and a big parachute trailing behind it. Unlike the other flights, there was visible damage on the exterior of the plane, where one of the oxygen tanks had been. Local authorities had been informed of the collision, and screaming fire trucks rushed down the runway to meet them. Dr. Mansfield was helped down the ladder and out of his suit by the emergency services, who looked him over as he sat on a stretcher and looked around. It was damn cold, but at least he was breathing fresh air again. If he wasn't due for debriefing, he might have asked the nice flight attendant out to coffee...

EDIT: Once they discovered they were all dressed up with nowhere to go, the Orion evac mission standing by at Garneau Launch Centre aborted its mission. Given the setup cost, the Orion remained at Garneau and was taken off the launch pad to be refit for its next scheduled sightseeing mission.

ooc: Newp, because to me the whole world is dead. This thread is no longer cnrp2 because in the only version of the cnrp2 I will accept, every nuke in my old nation (Druk Yul) has been fired and the world is a radioactive dust bowl uninhabitable by any life save a few plants and humans under ground. Nothing they fire would get past the kessler syndrome debris belt. My toys are still here. Your world is dead. I killed it. If you are still alive in a bunker down there, enjoy the glow. No further posting here please except for Dragonisia Mars RP.

As changes swept through the holdings of Druk Yul, eventually they would hit space as the relocation wave propagated through the universe at speeds approaching relativistic velocities. The entire space program, found itself orbiting a new earth in a new instance of its existence...

OOC Prelude:

Before anyone cries foul. This is my way of taking the sky wardens out of the story for a year or two so rl tech can catch up. The remaining craft are going to be sent to the hangars for study once this event concludes. Mogar has complete control over the outcome of this event. It's purely for fun as I needed a reason to shelve the planes for a while.

IC starts here:

Top Secret

The Sky Wardens had done their job. They had been in orbit for years now. They were still considered experimental as they had just been left to orbit to wait for satisfactory conditions to return to call them home. All 6 responded.. and began their approach towards Mayanmar. Unknown to mission control, one of the wardens had been impacted by a micro-meteorite  or debris item during the great war. Its heat shielding, a thruster, and a drag control surface  had been damaged.

Of the 6, 5 began their proper return descents.. but the last one while it initially would stay on approach, it didn't keep its nose down at the correct angle. When the computer systems noticed the problems in the guidance and performed its self check and determined the control problems, it reported the error back to late. The path had been laid and the angle was too steep. The Sky Warden began to spin out of control and assumed a ballistic, rather than a descent trajectory. In an unfortunate and freak nightmare, it was on track to land somewhere in or near Hong Kong.

The Space Agency notified the East Asian Imperium of the out of control craft immediately.

Public

Global Aerospace Warning: There is a Spaceplane on uncontrolled re-entry on a trajectory towards Hong Kong over the Indian Ocean. It is not responding to self-destruct commands due to its computer systems receiving critical damage from an unkown source.

Several attempts were made by Druk Yul to shoot down the craft on its flight path, but the shots missed and landed in the ocean harmlessly.

While the Imperium had suspected either Druk Yul or Tikal to have been responsibility for the "Space War" that occurred at the beginning of the Tripartite War due to the targets affected, this was the first real evidence they had received, an acknowledgement would be sent back along with a formal request to shoot down the vehicle due to the likelihood of civilian casualties. The object was rather small and could not cause widespread destruction, it provided a chance to test out THAAD against a real target.

  • 1 month later...

After a brief break in the hectic pace of the space program to account for the error in the space planes, a new series of satellites began to launch for a new constellation. The "Ears of Ares" are a dedicated NOSS constellation constituent of 6 SIGINT satellites that listen into 1000+ bands of radio signals from the earth's surface. They were used in the cold war to track soviet naval traffic. It is hoped the ears will help to further define the targeting capacity of ARES and help it find more military intelligence targets than commercial shipping. The NOSS system would be linked into the current ARES array's guidance systems to better pick out military fleets using active radio and satellite communications. They would be launched at a rate of roughly one observation sat per month.

Some aging ARES sats that had been in orbit since the last war would be retired  as the NOSS variants took their place in the constellation. As 6 went up, 6 would come down, keeping the ARES net static with these slight improvements.
