Druk Yul Mars mission completes 6 month voyage and successfully deposits the Druk Mars Spider Rover.

Shangri-La - The Head of DYSA has formally announced that the Mars Spider Rover launched shortly after the manned moon mission has made its rendezvous with the red planet in the expected time of 6 and a half months travel using the aid of Xeno Ion Engines and large solar sails!

The Initial objective was establishing a solar orbit just outside of significant Earth System Influence

Next the engines burned including the nuclear thermal rockets and the ion jets til the craft and the target planet were on a collision course while Mars was at close appoach!

The rover landed on the darkened side of mars. The first thing the rover did was orient itself, make sure it was in a stable landing area.. and then it shut itself down for the night to conserve battery power.

The next morning it charged its batteries and prepared for a day of work, sending back images of the first Martian Sunrise seen by Druk Yul's equipment.

The light and sturdy carriage of the rover proved so stable that it literally skipped across some of the smoother parts of the Martian surface without loss of control.

Over the next few years, the rover will conduct a large variety of experiments via the on board labs at various locations across the surface, gauging the suitability for habitation, mining, and potentially, eventually agriculture.

ooc: Had it orbiting earth just waiting for the right time to approach mars in the orbits. MET is thus skewed for the RP by the intiial time-stamp you see of 278 days.

Request for interest!

The Baffin Island expansion of the international space station, though paid for by the Baffin Island Government, remains unoccupied. With the Baffin Island government apparently facing difficulty, the expansion reverts to Druk Yul control. We are looking for parties interested in crewing or using the expansion.

The Atlantic Federation Space Agency remains slow in searching for candidates for the international space program due to attempts to develop a manned program of its own, but has nevertheless helped interested parties to join by sponsoring them and transmitting their applications to Druk Yul. This includes a handful of Air Force and Navy pilots.

Despite it being less costly to do research planetside, such as in Antarctica, several universities and pharmaceutical companies in the Federation have expressed interest in using the labs in the Baffin module for medical research. However, none of them have personnel qualified to train as astronauts.

The Druk Yul space program would accept a few of the more promising applications from the Air Force and Navy. Since no one had been expressing interest in the outside community, one was assigned to a mars orbital base. The other was assigned to the Mars landing as co-pilot. Druk Yul warmly accepted the applicants of the medical research, pharmacuetical companies, and the universities. A single applicant was selected from each of those groups and they began low-g training for delivery to the newly relabeled, "Atlantic Federation Space Agency extension.

Additionally the AFSA would note it now has docking permissions on that side of the station and a manual on docking procedures and practices was issued to them.

Last call for mars!

If you want to send a cosmonaut to mars, now is your last chance! The time frame to train the crew in relation to the launch date will be considered 48 hours from now to be too small to get your crew ready. That said, if you want to go to mars with Druk Yul, we need to know now.

During its test flight, the commercial spaceplane [post='3299756']Bombardier Orion[/post] briefly docked at the AFSA extension of Druk Station 1, and transferred a small volume of Federation university and commercial science projects over to the module while conducting system tests. Shortly thereafter, it undocked and proceeded on its way home.

Dr. Mansfield took a picture of the Orion from DS-1 and has released it into the public domain, as well as kept a copy for himself to add to his personal space album.

AFSA continues to be quite cooperative with the international space program, and continues to lend its launch facilities in the Maritimes for satellite launches as requested.

"After a long delay, the Baffin Intercontinental Astronaumical Administration is finally heing funded by the government, and is now ready to use the docking stations specified for its use. We once again thank Druk Yul for allowing us to hop on their space program."

OOC: What game/program are you using for the launches?

ooc: Kerbal Space Program. If you download and install it I'll upload and link my station design so you can get it into orbit yourself and then demonstrate your own docking maneuvers with the station. The station is in an orbit at 200km above earth/kerbin orbit with near 0 eccentricity. It is challenging to launch so may take you an attempt or two if you're new to the game. Although it occured to me.. to reflect the expansions I'll probably need to send you the entire druk yul saved sandbox campaign. It's not very big fortunately.

ic: We wanted to inform Baffin Island that you will be sharing that section of the station with the Atlantic Federation as we thought your government may have been having difficulty as it hadn't responded to communication regarding the new extension. You can both support 2 cosmonauts in the Habitation section. If this is much of a problem we can always launch another station extension so you each have your own quarter of the station.

Umm,, on second thought, nevermind. We just realized the Atlantic Federation just put their crew on board today and is planning commercial tourism visits. We will launch the additional expansion this coming weekend to make sure Baffin Island may still also be accomodated. We've already got the 4  extensions complete we've just been so busy we haven't had an opportunity to send them up. Edited by Maelstrom Vortex

If it isn't too late, the Antarctic Federation would like to send our potential candidates over to you.

Sorry for any inconveniences.

It is not to late, The launch has been delayed as the space station actually needs additional expansion and has stolen priority. We'll add them to the mars program immediately. What are their names?

AFSA wishes to clarify that the docking by the orbital spaceplane earlier today was part of the vehicle's test flight by Bombardier Inc., and only a small amount of cargo was transferred to the station, not crew. As of the moment, no tourist visits are planned to go to Druk Station 1 and the Federation will be open to joint ownership of the module with Baffin.

## In space! The orbital wreath of supply probes.

Around Mars, multiple unmanned space craft formed an equatorial orbit at the exact same speeds. Each one carried fuel and spplies that could support a colony of four to ten persons on mars for a year. Once triggered, they would de-orbit in a series every year at roughtly the same time, delivering supplies to the planned Druk Yul outpost. This included "empty" habitation modules that could be added progressively to the existing base for if the mars colonists had children. There were a total of ten such craft, now forming a wreath around the equator. The preparations for the Orbital Base and the the Mars Bas were nearing completion. Once Druk Station 1 had been upgraded, the mars manned orbital station would be launched.

International News.

The Baffin Island addition has been added to the space station.

adayinthesun.png

In other, space related news the Mars Rover had traveled almost 33 degrees north from the equator on the red planet over several weeks of travel and had only expended 5% of its on board fuel to make the journey. It was projected to hit the martian ice caps in the next two months were it would sample the north polar ice.

DYSA announced that the Druk Yul Mars Space station had launched and successfully achieved earth orbit!

On board were the mission commander from Druk Yul, Atta Maja and Cynthia Washington from the Antarctic federation. The couple were specially selected for the mission due to their psychological profile as well as their compatibility as companions on the long voyage. Only two of the four crew spaces on the station would be occupied as part of standard operation. The reason for this was the other two spaces would be used for emergency recovery in the event a craft near mars began to encounter difficulty. They had signed on for a one decade tour, a remarkable commitment in the name of science. It was possible with improving technology that the tour would be shortened, but that could not be guaranteed.

The station would serve as a way point for craft going to and returning from.. yes that's right, returning from mars. At first it would mostly be the supply craft in orbit which would refuel and return to earth for re-use after delivering their payloads to either the station or the martial surface base that was planned. It was planned, barring disaster, that the mars station would be in operation for several decades if not a century or more before needing replacement.

The station was launched with the tanker extension superstructure atop it in order to reduce the number of trips and the work to assemble the station. It made for an unstable launch. Fortunately, the flight computer was barely able to keep it within acceptable flight parameters which prevent the craft from flying apart. The next space station launch that included an extender would be additionally reinforced on its connection to the outside boosters to reduce the wobble to safer parameters.

After hitting its orbit, and doing a ship wide inspection to ensure all was in order, the vessel would burn from earth orbit towards a rendezvous with Druk Station 2 at the moon where it would refuel all fuel types and wait for the approach of mars to begin its burn towards the red planet's gravity well.

After a long week of making sure all the equipment was in good order for the long voyage, DYSA finally gave Cynthia and Atta the go ahead for the lunar burn to rendezvous with Druk Station 2 to resupply.

So the engines ignited, and the burn to the moon commenced. It would be a long one, the ship required a lot of power to change inertia.

Druk Station 3 Enters Mars Orbit!

Druk%20Station%203%20Mars.jpg

AP (Druk Yul) - After many months of travel the Druk Station 3 craft has finally reached Mars Orbit. Mars station will serve as a scientific and traffic direction hub for the expanding Druk Yul Solar System Transit Network or SSTN. With docking ports to support many craft the new station will facilitate refueling ensuring no future Mars mission must worry about being stranded. The station didn't use about 1/4 of its fuel in the journey. It is positioned at 7 million kilometers over the martian equator in a north neutral position. The orbit has .01 eccentricity at a 0 inclination, well within intended parameters.

DYSA has announced it is now developing a space plane so that once the mars base is established, active travel between Mars and the Earth may begin once a few habitation modules are installed on the ground and at the station.

Cynthia Washington and Atta Maja are healthy. They had a few brief shaky spots when a few flares sent CMEs past the craft, but the radiation shelters and shielding kept them safe. Still having a full load of mono-propellant, the station is still quite maneuverable and able to avoid many of the hazards one might encounter in Mars orbit.

Cynthia sent her best wishes home as well as Atta who gave this brief interview spot via radio, "Yeah, it was a long.. rough trip. They tell you in advance how much the isolation can play tricks on your mind. So we did our best to occupy ourselves with our hobbies and remote chats with our family over email and radio. Though it took longer and longer to talk to them, it always helped so that we didn't feel totally cut off. Mars is beautiful, we're still at quite a distance so it still looks a bit like a red ball, but it's a much bigger than a marble. I hope once the mars colony is built and the space plane begins its trips that I might have a chance to visit it. I hear they intend on dropping a bulldozer with fuel from one of the orbital pods they already have ore-stationed up here for the landing, I bet that will be a sight, opening a drop pod to find a multi-ton vehicle within. They need it to make the runway. I heard they even have some of the pods up here with asphalt pre-mix in case they can't make the runway suitable. We did a count last night, there's at least 25 other pods up here, all with materials ready to make the insertion. I do know this much, if they do get a runway built and I think they probably will.. that will radically accelerate colonization."

"The Rover has also been sending us telemetry. In its travels it's picked up a few of mars' gas vents in its travels. I've forwarded these to mission control to help them plot a landing site for the runway center. Being near a source of potentially recoverable natural fuel would probably be useful in the future. Mom, Dad, I love you.. hope you're doing well. Don't worry to much about me, I'm living the dream."

DYSA announced that a time lapse video of the journey from the mission logs would be made available later today.

DYSA announces that a secretly developed SSTO Space X-Plane, known as Indra has achieved the first SSTO to dock status. While this is a major achievement, the current design is not fuel efficient enough to serve as a tanker system in the logistical network of the planned intra-solar highway. That will require the use of nuclear thermal rockets. Indra 2 is already in planning and will use a third engine, the third will not be discarded, but part of the spacecraft and will be used purely for travel through the immediate vicinity of Earth until a Mars test can be planned. If Indra 2 is successful, the founding work will be laid for Druk Yul's plan of several solar-system space stations to provide refueling for ongoing solar system exploration missions.

The mission did not go without hitches. Due to a misfiring mono-propellant engine, the Indra accidentally rammed the space station, taking out one of its precious solar panels. Due to the many redundant panels, this is not expected to hinder operations as power is at over a 200 fold excess as provided by current input systems even with the panel missing.

Indra will be returning to the Myanmar Spaceport later today after unloading supplies and food for the station crew.. Due to the current international environment, the names of the pilots are not being released.
