A 1-0 loss isn't that embarrassing. And we are sorry that Slavorussia lost its coach, but what kind of person has aim so bad that he has to shoot himself twice in the face to die?

OOC: He was murdered. Two shots to the face is impossible.

OOC: Well you could shoot your nose and still live :P

I was just going with the apparent suicide note.

AFIS has ordered the flags of all nations to be lowered to half staff in remembrance of Slavorussia's coach. AFIS security teams will be doing thorough sweeps of all luggage and personal belongings of each team to remove any remaining firearms. The United States would do well to watch their comments and show respect for the dead and the Slavorussian team. Even though you may be opponents on the pitch, there is no reason for snide and sarcastic comments aimed at a team already going through immeasurable loss.

"All flags have been lowered as requested.
A great loss for the Slavorussians. If requested, we will do an investigation regarding the man's death."

If the host nations wishes to do an investigation, it is fully within their jurisdiction to do so. AFIS is not a body with a criminal investigative team, so we do not have the resources to do so. Our security teams were merely making sure that any firearms, which are not permitted to be carried by teams at AFIS events, were not present.

The Hakaarian Empire will comply with the AFIS and honor the fallen coach. All flags will be flown at half staff.

The defending champions began their title defense against Zargathia, a team that had no international tournament experience but had played in some very convincing friendlies. Many analysts had said that if the Republic of York slept on Zargathia they could be upset. The Crimson Lions never slept on Zargathia.

From the opening minutes, it was clear which team was in control and which team would win the match. Phillip Kelly scored a hat trick in his first international tournament match, notching goals in the 4th, 19th, and 56th minutes. Oscar Willman punctuated his performance with a goal of his own in the 72nd.

Willman and Robert Labant were both booked for the Crimson Lions. C. Yu was booked for Zargathia.

"We congratulate York on their victory, and we hope to see you again in the knockout stage."

(on the Slavorussian coach)

"Zargathia will be lowering its flags in accordance with this grievous incident."

(to the Zargathian team)

The match between Louisiana and the Greater Japanese Empire was the biggest sleeper of the entire Day 1 lineup. Combined, between the two teams, there was only a single chance on net, coming from a long range shot in the 34th minute from Louisiana. Indeed, the only excitement in the match was a hard tackle by Harriem that earned him a yellow card followed by a retaliatory tackle by Tamada that also earned him a yellow. With the draw, both teams earned a single point.

Louisiana v. Greater Japanese Empire 0-0

The second game in the group, while also ending in a draw, was the exact opposite of the Louisiana/GJE match. The Alaskan Union and the Athenian Federation took it to each other for the entire match, both goal-wise and physically, providing an entertaining and enjoyable match for the fans.

The Alaskan Union took an early lead with a strike from Kealey off a corner kick. The defender controlled the ball with his chest and then rifled it out of midair past the Athenian keeper. The underdogs had shocked the runners-up from the last tournament by going up 1-0, and it didn’t stop there. Jamie Nakken got a breakaway in the 41st minute and scored to put the Alaskan Union up 2-0 at the break.

The halftime speech much have revved up the Athenians, because they came out with new purpose in the second half. Bojinov and Katsouranis scored within five minutes of each other near the start of the second half to make it 2-2. Many fans felt that the Athenians would pull out the three points, that their first half had simply been a setback of underestimating an opponent. But the Alaskan Union showed that they had come to play, tightening their defense and holding the Athenians to a 2-2 draw.

Skela was booked for the Athenians and Witherell was booked for the Alaskans in the match.

Alaskan Union v. Athenian Federation 2-2

The United States of America looked to continue and improve on their run from the last Cup. They certainly got off to a good start against the Romanov Federation.

Just three minutes into the match, Pennock sliced a shot past the Romanov keeper to make it 1-0. In the 21st, Grossberg blasted a shot in from the penalty area, making it 2-0. In what was both a combination of the Romanov’s tightening their defense and the Americans taking their foot off the gas, there was no scoring the rest of the match and hardly any other chances as well.

Slate was booked for the United States. Roy and Harrison were booked for the Romanov Federation.

United States of America v. Romanov Federation 2-0

This match really could have been played between just two players, and the result probably would have been the same. For both Cochin and Koryo, the teams looked flat and disinterested in their first match of the third Cup of Nations except for two players: Rithu KS for Cochin and Seol Ki-Myeon for Koryo. Both players scored within minutes of each other in the first and second halves, notching two goals apiece and carrying their teams themselves to a draw.

Park Hyui-Chul was booked for the Koryo Confederation.

Kingdom of Cochin v. Koryo Confederation 2-2

The number three team in the world opened up against Arctica and showed no trace of rust or any other problems as they absolutely destroyed the African side. Jørgensen, Rommedahl, and Sand all scored for the Danish, who simply dominated the match from start to finish and blew out the Lemurs 3-0.

Razafindrakoto was booked for Arctica. Djuric and Rommedahl were booked for Denmark.

Denmark v. Arctica 3-0

In the upset of Day 1, the Republic of Vietnam came in underestimating Southern Sudan and paid dearly for it, putting themselves behind the eight ball in their group the rest of the way. A header off a corner by Kig Tong il in the 42nd minute was all Sudan needed to take the lead and hold it. Even a concerted flurry of shots in the match’s waning minutes could not put Vietnam past the Sudanese. The young country’s team celebrated on the field following their toppling of one of the world’s best.

Truong Tan Buu was booked for the Republic of Vietnam.

Republic of Vietnam v. Southern Sudan 0-1

The match between the Empire of France and the Queendom of Australia was much more one-sided than the score line would have you believe. France truly dominated the match from start to finish, with goals from Blanchard and Aubry staking them to a 2-0. Only a defensive lapse in the 88th minute prevented a clean sheet for the French as Rauvola snuck one past the near side post for the Australians. Still, they never got close again and the victory for France was never really in doubt.

Haapalainen was booked for the Queendom of Australia.

Queendom of Australia v. Empire of France 1-2

The match was largely anti-climactic. Jaeger showed continued scoring touch and prowess as he chipped the Commonwealth keeper in the 6th minute to stake the Isara Alliance to a 1-0 lead. Nothing else of excitement happened through the rest of the match, neither team getting very many chances, and Isara won by the same score.

Davenport and Reyes were booked for the North Pacific Commonwealth.

Cochin National Football Team congratulates Koryo Confederation on a match well played. "We faced a tight competition from Koryo and we could not manage a win, but we shall learn from today's game and I am confident that our boys would play better in the match against United States of America," IM Vijayan, Coach of the team said in a press briefing.

Gregor Eivanov himself spoke to the Isaran team after their victory against The North Pacific Commonwealth, and despite their victory against the NPC Eivanov had only harsh words.

"Do you think you will be able to even hope for so much as a draw against teams such as France and Australia with the performance I saw today? I expect you all to harden your resolve and play harder in your next matches."

The Australian coach, after the game, could be seen by anyone near the locker room berating his players on such a sloppy performance. However, in public, he was all smiles as he congratulated the French.

"If we had to lose to someone, there are few better opponents to do so for."

On a side note, Australian flags were at half-mast like all the others, in honor of the fallen Slavorussian coach.

If today's embarassing loss wasn't enough for the Slavorussian players to deal with they would have to deal with even more personal loss. The team's coach was found dead in his hotel room. He was the apparent victim of two gunshot wounds to the face. A suicide note found beside the body will be shipped home with his coffin..

"The result of the investigation is as follows, finding the following things out:
The deceased trainer was homosexual. He was heavily intoxicated at the time of his death and had various pills in his rectum. Additionally, we found evidence of heavy gambling. We could not find any proof pointing to murder or homicide, though the two bullets in his head are somewhat strange. The current theory is that he survived the first gunshot - something not unheard of - and offed himself with the second because he saw it as last resort during his intoxication, having lost the recent game as well as having accumulated considerable debts. The pills may have been another result of the intoxication, though the exact 'why' is a mystery.
We conclude that it was most likely one case of attempted suicide and one case of successful suicide."

The North Pacific Commonwealth is unhappy with the loss, although some media outlets put a positive spin on the game as the team was able to hold Isara, a much more highly ranked team, to a single goal.

OOC: Trying something different. Due to increased workload factors going on IRL and in CNRP, I am simply posting the scores, who scored, and if there were any bookings. How and when people scored are up to the posters. Basically, the first person to write a match report for the game is cannon. That will decrease my workload and allow all of you to become a little more involved with your teams. So, we'll see how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'll switch back to the old way for Cup of Nations IV.

Also, just a reminder there is an RP freeze in regards to the Cup, so all the current wars and stuff don't have any effect on the competition.
