New Roleplayer RP Tips

Reminder to experienced Role Players:

Please encourage new role players by actively participating in their role play. Don't bash them, don't threaten them, and offer them constructive advice to keep them around.

Further, if they decide that this style isn't for them that is perfectly alright and they aren't cheating, accept them as one of our own and have fun.

Disclaimer: These are not rules. These are tips for those who wish to use them. If someone tries to force you to use these by claiming they are rules let one of the Game Mods know. Feel free to PM me at anytime if you have questions.

Thanks!

Hello, These tips are for those who wish to try something different. Everyone has their own style of Role Play and they should all be embraced providing no one is cheating.

I'd suggest giving role play on CNRP a good whirl first before giving these a try. Once you are more familiar with how we role play on CNRP and you want to try something different then give this a shot.

(is there a thread explaining how to get started in CNRP with things like map thread land requests and how to post an SoI? If so.. insert thread here)

1) Development of Individual Character.

2) Development of the National Character.

3) Common mistakes and so forth.

4) The Cure for Common Mistakes.

Development of Individual Character

Every role player has some sort of character they use. The individual character can not be you or really it just isn't role play. So please take the time to think something out for this persona. Role playing by the very definition of the term is acting out a role.

IF You are being yourself then you just aren't role playing.

To begin with you need to get a rough idea of what your character looks like. Is he/she tall, short, skinny, fat, black, white, Asian, midget, or whatever? This comes in handy later when you are role playing a diplomatic function and your 320 pound ambassador is trying to do the foxtrot without collapsing into a puddle of his own sweat. It adds flavor and style to your character that often gets ignored.

Once you've figured out what this guy or gal looks like you need to come up with a back story for them. You can do this by answering these questions:

1) Where are they from?

2) How old are they?

3) Do they have some sort of higher education?

4) Are their parents alive?

5) If their parents aren't alive how did they die?

6) Do they have any living relatives?

7) Do they have any close friends, wife, husband, girlfriend, or boyfriend?

8) How much influence doe these people have on your character? (meaning how well does your character listen to them?)

9) What is your characters political alignment?

10) What event or events pushed your character towards that political view?

9 and 10 are important because later on in role play you have to really think about what it would take to change your character's mind about their politics. It is just the same as real life in the sense that not often people change their political affiliations without some serious reason for changing it.

11) What does your character aspire to be in life? (this can help fuel some entertaining role play if you find ways to include it)

12) Every character has to have some sort of motivation. They must have something that compels them to act in the way that they act. Without this motivation or motivations the characters actions are far to often random and based upon the whims of the role player. What motivates your character?

- This can be some sort of moral philosophy..

- Religion..

- A life altering event..

- Brain washing..

- education..

I'm sure there are many other examples, but in short once you determine what drives and motivates your character try to stick with it. Don't change this without providing the story that explains the change.

13) What are your character's strengths?

- Is he/she patient?

- Highly intelligent?

- excellent at hand to hand combat?

The list for this one is probably endless with a little bit of imagination. But with to much imagination you get someone who is drop dead handsome, a genius, a master at 14 martial arts, speaks 34 languages, and is banned from role play for god modding the impossible.

- NO character should be perfect. Don't over do the strengths and I suggest picking two or three to round out your character's personality.

14) What are your character's weaknesses?

-Scared of the dark?

-Bed wetter?

-wimp?

- blind?

- one leg?

Again, creativity makes this list pretty extensive. But, keep in mind that while it probably isn't god modding to make the world's biggest handicapped person it certain will make for some pretty limited role play when your mentally challenged, weakling, quadruple amputee needs to be spoon fed three times a day.

Try to keep everything in moderation..

Once you nailed down your rough character sketch I suggest typing it all up in the format of a story that introduces us to the character over time. This introductory post gives you the baseline of the character that you can fall back upon later. It also is a good way to meet other role players in live rp rather than just dropping in on an international summit where you aren't know.

The key to successful character role play is that you use moderation and be patient.

Development of National Character

Now this is a bit of a tricky one as this is a nation role play. I don't have much in the way of constructive advice for this other than suggesting the following:

1) Formulate your national policy early in your role play.

- This gives you the boundaries of your nation rp that encourages the development of a storyline to explain why that policy changes.

2) If you have no idea what your nation stands for you can always go in game and look it up on your extended view. This could for some provide a decent national policy starting point.

3) If you are bigger on Nation role play than character role play take the time to develop your government organizations. I suggest this as the idea could provide you with a great deal of satisfaction through the writing and creative process. Really take the time to come up with something you like and something that reflects the national character overall.

- For example, having a secret service that kidnaps people off the street in a very open and democratic society doesn't seem very logical. Now if you want to build up to it then create the story to justify it over time. Because I have a hard time believing that a democratic society suddenly feels the urge to kidnap its own citizens on a whim.

PROVIDE justification through your story...

Now.. not everyone likes to write up huge reams of text like I do. I like writing.. Actually I love it and it is something I wish I was better at. However, for those of us who aren't down with the wall o' text there are options.

- Press releases..

- News reports..

- underground press..

- resistance radio..

You can use these ideas and I'm sure many others like it to create the story that explains the why of the situation that comes up later.

For example:

Government of Booby suddenly decides to pass a conscription law. Before the government has always espoused pacifism and has deliberately kept a small military.

So why this?

Build the story up with a series of short newspaper articles and such to show the government transitioning in this direction. Though I do suppose that a sudden aggressive move by a neighbor could cause such a policy change. However, if everyone is running a story properly then I suspect no one is going to be surprised. (Well providing you are paying attention. If not.. sucks to be you)

FACTBOOKS...

I really like factbooks and I plan to create one for myself once the Republic of Free Somal is a bit more developed. However, it is my opinion, that a factbook needs to include some of these important details:

1) Government

2) Charter

3) Flag

4) Leaders (link the character introduction threads as well...)

5) Military (link the development of the equipment or the acquisition of the equipment)

6) Industry (Link all applicable threads that demonstrates your industrial capability. Because really, just 'cause you big and high tech doesn't mean you are any good at making a specific item. These skills should be demonstrated through role play.)

7) Treaties (link all applicable announcements and as importantly the negotiations)

Here is a pet peeve of mine... Why are frothing at the mouth dictators forming treaties with enlightened democracies? I think we all ought to pay attention to our political orientation just a little more. Culture and ethnicity really doesn't mean a hoot when it comes to politics. Despite being the same nation and people the US managed to fight its own bloody civil war over politics. That's just one example as there are many more. Politics trumps everything when it comes to culture and ethnicity.

As for the actual formation of your nation's military, government, and industries I think we need to walk through the process. How often have we all seen some massive nation drop out of no where to start playing with no backstory? I really do suggest we start smaller than we are in game and then build up to where we are at through role play.

If anyone else has ideas please add them and I'll splice them in.

ps. These are not rules.

pps. These are not guidelines.

ppps. Therse are suggestions to help people who decide they want to help.

pppps. If you are a total lamer that tries to wave these over someone's head let me know and I'll make fun of you now rather than later.

ppppps. Please see below for common mistakes.

Common Mistakes

OOC/IC crossing: this is when you use knowledge you couldn't have know in character to act. In short you read a post of a private meeting and decide to act on it. How could have known about the meeting if it was private? If you have some sort of highly developed espionage capability then demonstrate the capacity and spy on the meeting.

Character Crossing: Once your character dies he/she is dead. You can't simply have your next character carry on the crusade against your former enemies. Once you die then the character is dead. No trying to rebuild in a new character or national character to carry on as before.

Besides.. if you really get into role playing you'll begin to enjoy the creative process.

Go forth and find a new gimmick.

Griefers: People who whine about everything. Ignore them.

Whiners: People who grief about everything. Ignore them.

God Moders: People who cheat. Don't ignore them, but do feel free to use the PM function to address it with a mod. Because the old saying applies, "Everyone has an opinion and they all... "

God moding is when someone is being indestructible or claiming a feat that just isn't theirs to claim. Before you claim god moding I suggest looking over the nation's factbook to verify it. If they are claiming to be using a higher tech tank and you don't find the applicable development or acquisition thread linked in the factbook you might just be right. Again.. you probably might be smart to use the pm function. If you are a real decent sort you'd pm the other role player first as everyone does make mistakes.

Be considerate... it helps.

Cure for the common mistakes

Accept criticism without having a nasty attitude and move on. When you are wrong for doing something you are wrong. If you just admit to it right away and deal with it you'll get more done in role play.

However, if you are right I'd suggest offering to discuss it with the person in IRC or PM. Don't flood the forums with e-rage over what could be a misunderstanding.

Now if the other dude is just being belligerent then hand it over to the mods and move on with your day.

Upon further reflection I have to say I can't support the idea of a successor state under these conditions:

1) There doesn't appear to be any sort of transitional period between states that clearly details the path from collapse of former government to the rise of a new government.

2) More often than not the role play of the previous government comes to a screaming stop and out of the middle of no where the successor state pops up.

The only way I'll support a successor state is under the following conditions:

1) The successor state is the end product of extensive role play.

2) The characters and people while not on the map still actively role played their situation as refugees.

3) The move to reclaiming a government is done so through deliberate role play rather than the actions of grabbing up a piece of land that is avaliable on the map and having a spontaneous go of it.

By extensive role play I don't mean hours either. I mean a few months worth of role play that creates the story of your people's fall and rise.

Evan Hiley, ex-CEO of Artemis Global Security, current shadow government of Louisiana (and by extension the USA)

1) Where are they from? New Orleans

2) How old are they? 25

3) Do they have some sort of higher education? College degree

4) Are their parents alive? Mother is

5) If their parents aren't alive how did they die? Father died in a car crash

6) Do they have any living relatives? Mother is alive, unknown amount of siblings still alive (he doesn't keep in touch)

7) Do they have any close friends, wife, husband, girlfriend, or boyfriend? Best friend is King Sargun, girlfriend (if you can use the term) be Sarah Tintagyl

8) How much influence doe these people have on your character? Listens to his best friend but throws away the suggestions, is heavily influenced by Sarah

9) What is your characters political alignment? He is probably center-left although he doesn't like to admit that he has an orientation

10) What event or events pushed your character towards that political view? He suffered through a conservative government when he was young and very influenced by what was going on in the world, so his political orientation was biased towards the left from the start.

11) What does your character aspire to be in life? Rich (he is), famous (infamous), powerful (once the leader of the largest nation in the world)

12) Every character has to have some sort of motivation. They must have something that compels them to act in the way that they act. Without this motivation or motivations the characters actions are far to often random and based upon the whims of the role player. What motivates your character? My character is motivated to be like a father figure. Without his own father and with a mother who treated his siblings better than him, he feels the need to be the one who does things for everyone else and gets known for it. He has a temper and this often motivates him to go to extreme lengths when punishing.

13) What are your character's strengths? He is very tolerant and has a wide variety of religious and political experience, although he doesn't practice many of them. He was a soldier when he was young and was trained in Jeet Kune Do and boxes as a bit more than a hobby. Has an engineering degree.

14) What are your character's weaknesses? Impatient, has a temper, a weakness for women. Tends to make rash decisions. As a byproduct of his experiences in South America, he has post-traumatic stress disorder-related nightmares, which wake him up regularly. Refuses to fly in helicopters and has a phobia of small dogs. A weak neck.

-----

That's an example I post here. Hopefully new players can see how easy it is and do something relatively simple.

Bob is motivated by the injustices, blood baths, and other war crimes he has seen all over Africa. He reacts poorly to the idea of Western intervention into Africa in the guise of charity. He views charitable organizations as part of the problem and tends to dismiss them when he feels they fall prey to their own do good instincts.

Spiffy tips, but I will not support forcing people to create backstories. It just generates "OMG U HAV A LONG BACKSTORY IT R GUD" syndrome. Also know as "Elitist RP pricks".

Length doesn't equate quality and quality doesn't imply length. A back story can be as short as three to four sentences to thousands of words long. I don't advocate forcing anyone to create a backstory. You'll note that one of the four 'ps' statements implies that it would be incredibly lame to force these tips on anyone.

Everyone has their own distinct style of role play and all of them, excluding the ones that are blatant cheating, ought to be acknowledged and accepted. Myself I'll role play with anyone as long as they aren't playing on god mode or bringing an OOC Axe to grind with me to the role play.

Lets see we do have a guidlines section that was already made for this sort of thing where he could have posted his points and maybe had it changed but no he had to make his own and tell me does it look could to you if a new RPer comes along and sees:

Griefers: People who whine about everything. Ignore them.

Whiners: People who grief about everything. Ignore them.

God Moders: People who cheat. Don't ignore them, but do feel free to use the PM function to address it with a mod. Because the old saying applies, "Everyone has an opinion and they all... "

To me that either shows that the poster has some serious issues with some other posters or that the RP is full of the above which could put new RPers off.

Which is, of course, your opinion, but I see it as him referring to the people who tend to complain about every little thing OOC in the RP forum--and the god moders are a problem occasionally, you can't deny that.

However, nowhere does he name anyone specifically, so I really don't see what's so bad about it.

As for the guidlines...it's long fallen out of sight. People stopped posting in it anymore, so you can't blame him if he didn;t know it was there. Besides, that thread hasn;t been updated by the OP in a long, LONG time.

I know exactly where it is. Its called looking for it which isn't too hard and the only reason its fallen out of sight is that with the new move that occured it is no longer stickied which could possibly be fixed.

I knew of it and looked it over myself before writing this. This thread is merely for hints and suggestions for those who want to give them a try. I'd be a bit irked to see anyone forcing them on someone.

Yes but look at it from the viepoint of a brand new RPer. You have no experience and you want to start and then you get this HUGE wall of text about tips, which might seem overwhelming and more like rules which could or could not put people off roleplaying here.
