Terrestrian and Marscurian joint island

In order to forge a deeper relationship, the Terrestrian and Marscurian Empires have claimed an island and will rule it together. The island will be a symbol of peace and friendship, as well as a hub for commercial, industrial and cultural stength. The island can be found here:

We will divide the island like this, with Marscury taking the west, and Terrestria taking the east.

The island will be home to both the Marscurian and Terrestrian embassies, as well as joint commercial and industrial ventures. Synagogues, Mosques and Druid temples will inhabit the landscape to facilitate understanding of each other's religion and cultures. We will offer more updates as work continues.

A group of Marscurian and Terrestrian diplomats and engineers arrived on the small island. The plane flew over until it landed on the ice near the ocean, which was currently frozen. The men stepped out and took a deep breath.

"Aah," said one of the men from Marscury, "here, shall be a town"

He drew a line in the snow and planted the Marscurian flag on one side of it, a Terrestrian flag went on the other side.

"We shall build out from here. That way, our two sides will always be connected."

With that, Friendtown was established.

The airplane that delivered the men was a special cargo plane built by Marscurian Aerial Military Works. It has interchangable landing gear, able to switch between skis and wheels. Twelve were built in total. Four will be delivered to Terrestria, four will stay in Marscury and four will go to the Island. They will be the only way of moving supplies on and off the island until we get ice breakers and during the winter months when the ice is too thick for any ship.

Why...would you want an island that is virtually surrounded by Paraganea in the first place? If you ever have any sort of armed confrontation with them that island is toast. Completely indefensible. :P

OOC: That is why you don't mess with the larger nations armed with the big guns. :P

OOC: That's why we don't plan on going to war with them. This island is a land of cooperation between me and Vladboot.

The construction of the first settlement on the Island is progressing at a steady pace. The specialized cargo planes have been flying nonstop to deliver supplies of steel, glass, wind turbine components, concrete, vehicles and other necessities.

mawson.jpg

Specialized wind turbines, along with solar panels, will supply 100% of the electricity used on the island. The turbines are designed to operate in temperatures as low as 100 degrees below zero, and will have to supply all the power to the island, due to the almost sunless Antarctican winters. We are committed to making this one of the most environmentally friendly settlements on earth.

Greenhouse%20humidification.jpg

Enormous greenhouses will be delivering the island's inhabitants with their needed fruits and vegitables. Similar greenhouses will house chickens and turkeys, who will supply the colonists with fresh meat. This will eliminate the need for the planes to deliver food, leaving them availible for other missions.

Electric trains, such as this one, will be the only way to transport people and cargo between the settlements on the island, other than airplanes.. In order to keep the tracks clear, the railway will be completely covered in an above-ground concrete tunnel. In order to preserve the environment, the tunnel will be raised several feet off the ground in certain spots, as to not block migratory paths of animals.

We are happy with the progress being made, and will keep you updated.

We have a question-

If the ice starts meltings because of various issues you are building on, Will you continue this project and as such we lose an island which can rather be used for sceintific research then another colony?

We wish you to know that only a small amount of the island will be inhabited by people, the rest will remain natural. There will be 3 cities, a few large off-shore windfarms, greenhouses, and two railway lines, the rest is wild. The people of the Terrestrian Empire are very in touch with nature, and will make sure that we do as little to harm the environment as possible. We are also concerned about icemelt, we don't want our buildings flowing away. We have three solutions to this problem.

1. Most houses and other small to medium structures will be placed on stilts, so that the heat does not reach the ice or permafrost (This is done in Yakutsk, Russia, so it exists in real life).

2. Other buildings, such as green houses and high-rise buildings, will have extremely thick and insulated foundations, so that as little heat as possible will reach the ground

3. We will build up, not out, so that as little land as possible needs to be developed on. We will also moniter the movements of animals as to avoid blocking their movement.

We hope you see that we are very commited to making this an environmentally friendly settlement. We expect it to produce very little greenhouse gasses and to keep the pollution off the land. We don't even have garbage dumps. All garbage is either recycled or transported away to be disposed of. Scientists from all nations are still free to come to the Island to conduct their experiments.

OOC: Justinian, I'm glad to see it's not personal.

Dranagg congratulates its Northern Neighbor on its new joint founding on the island.

Cosidering that almost all nations in Antarctica are surrounded by this super power there is no issue with another piece of land near it. Paraganea has been nothing but friendly and open in our international relations with them.

The planning commission has finished it's planning for how the land will be used. Here is a map of the land usage on the Island:

islandlandusece2.jpg

Key:

Dark Purple: Marscurian City: Ays-shetl

Light Purple: Marscurian Food Production

Brown: Friendtown: neutral city

Magenta: Friendtown food production

Dark Tan: Terrestrian City

Light Tan: Terrestrian Food Production

Black: Offshore Wind Farms

Black Line: Railway

With less that 14% of the island being inhabited, and the railway being elevated to allow for all (if any) fauna movement, we hope that you see that we hope to keep as much of the Island as possible in natural condition.

Dranagg would like to express a warning about the possible volcanic nature of the island. The nearby mainland volcano should be heeded as a warning sign as to what created the island to begin with.

Yes, we have discovered that the southern part of the Island has the possiblility of volcanic activity, but a 3km thick sheet of ice safely protects all human settlement.

You might be surprised how fast even 3 km of ice will melt or break when it comes into contact with the contents of a volcanic eruption. Very little can stand against these most powerful of natural disasters.

OOC: Hopefully slow enough to evacuate anyone in the lava's way.

News from Friendtown:

The new settlement is growing quickly. The first 100 settlers have arrived and more are on the way. The airfield is complete and is taking in supplies.

The airfield is now complete, and several warehouses have sprung up around it. Homes are being built 1km from the airfield. As the settlement grows, the airfield will be expanded and upgraded until it becomes a respectable airport.

With only airlifts to supply the new colony, growth was going very slowly. An ambitious Marscurian captain decided to see if he could bring a supply ship into Friendtown during the summer months, when the ice is thinner.

healy_2019.jpg

He failed.

Meanwhile, back in Friendtown, the airport has finished paving its runways to allow conventional aircraft to deliver supplies.

With the days lasting over 20 hours in the summer months, workers can operate almost around the clock. Here, a plane lands at 11:00pm, carrying glass and dirt for the greenhouses.

Should either nation wish it. The summer ice port of Dranagg is open for them to bring in heavy equipment. It is located 20 KM east of Ross Island, and is a summer month port. Ramp access to the top of the iceshelf is available, and guides to avoid crevassas are available until you reach the terrestian empire's borders, and can complete an over land transit.

Lately, several planes have been landing in Friendtown containing mining equipment. But this equipment isn't for removing metals or gems from the earth, it is for collecting ice. With massive amounts of radiation contaminating the oceans, and a possible nuclear winter stopping the essential monsoon rains, the ice may have to do. The distance from conflict ensures that the water will contain very little radiaton, and will be safe for human use.
