This article is best read while listening to the Karma activist's new anthem.

Selling the Status Quo

"It's better than another treaty announcement thread." So goes out the call of Karma's epigones, characteristically blind to the fact that, far from highlighting the positive aspects of their thread, they condemn the entire state of world politics that they have constructed. So slow, so mundane, so controlled have things become that we are expected to drop on all fours and lick up the crumbs benevolently thrown our way, thanking them for constructing a system where this can genuinely be portrayed as the best we could ever hope for. But only in the most short-sighted and brow-beaten individual, an individual who has become so psychologically dependent on the existing structure of power that they cannot even imagine the slightest systemic change, only they could hold such an excuse in anything but the highest disdain.

Our degeneration to this point has become abundantly clear over the past few weeks, as the Mushroom Kingdom carelessly thrashes about in a vain attempt to live up to their former reputation as an 'unconventional' and 'fun' alliance, rather than a status quo power incapable of anything beyond perpetuating what already is. Unfortunately for them their thrashing about only betrays their complete misunderstanding what politics actually is -- the struggle for power. With the global structure ossified to the extent that it is seen as somehow natural they instead begin to tinker around the margins, deeming that doing anything, no matter how contrived or irrelevant, must make them appear once more as the exciting alliance shaking things up.

As a result we see them more and more targeting peripheral alliances of minor political importance. They will threaten NSO and express bewilderment when people roll their eyes, then attempt to deflect attention onto the 'evil' NPO and be shocked by a response of yawns and slow head-shakes. But even were they to attack NSO or NPO, what would change on the political scene? They are not challenging a centre of political power, nor risking any of their own in the process. These moves can never be more than an attempt at bread and circuses to the disenfranchised masses, and thus while they are doing something, they are not really doing anything.

Grasping at Air

This is the mistake that we see so many of the big players make today. Their minds continue to exist in a past where there is MK's side and a competing 'other'. As a result they continue to see the political interplay as being between the strength of their side and a revisionist power that they can attack and engage in political games with.

The concern begins to develop when they realise that despite all their fighting they are left feeling empty, the contentment they remembered from days long past and sought to recapture evading them as grasp and catch only air. The simple explanation for this is that there is no 'other' in any meaningful sense of the word. There is no potential political or military challenge, and thus any attack on perceived others means nothing -- there is no political risk and no political victory, only a continuing emptiness as the the form of politics goes through the motions without any of the substance. The only possible outcome from this shadow of what was once politics can be a feeling of 'what has any of this actually meant?'

And so the search for politics continues in vain, as those capable of creating it continue to box at shadows, either too blind or too fearful to challenge any of the real pillars of power -- to risk a loss and chase a meaningful win. And this is where we sit, in an apolitical abyss strangled free of oxygen while we bow down in thanks for the poisonous carbon monoxide provided in its place. It's better than boring old carbon dioxide, after all.

This is a completely flawed analysis of current events. The world is currently in the process of dividing into moralist and non-moralist sides. This has been the case for some time. Eventually you're going to get a war between Polar and friends, and PB. NPO isn't exactly close with PB, so either you'll be on Polar's side, or you'll be rolled at some other point in the future.

I loved the song, by the way. That's going on my iPod.

Sorry, Kal, but you're totally wrong. There is absolutely nothing going on outside of the alliances that feel they need

. . . to . . . ensure the safety of both alliances from external attacks . . .

by snuggling up to PB. There's no "moralist" side. There are no moralists. The people referred to as moralists were Karma and, hey, guess what: Now they're what you're calling the "non-moralist side."

This weekend's ODN treaty illustrates exactly what Vlad is talking about, yet here sits an ODNista saying "ohhhh, no, that's just silly."

Pandora's Box and ODN's recent treaties are nothing more than an exercise in Continuum-era power politics. It's like I'm at a renaissance fair. Build an absolutely over-arching power superstructure, then tell alliances to change it with physical force. Soooo creative. Brilliant strategy.

Anyway, all you guys' safety is definitely ensured. :smug:

I'll say. If our only enemy is a coalition that falls apart after a few hours because of faulty and desperate leadership, we are pretty safe indeed.

Who's desperate?

[20:29] <OsRavan[ODN]> ive got to be honest. Like I said ll back you no matter what.

[20:59] <OsRavan[ODN]> i honestly think we are best off wrapping this up peacefully now.

[20:59] <OsRavan[ODN]> i know you like killing things ::grins;:

[20:59] <OsRavan[ODN]> but yeah

[21:18] <OsRavan[ODN]> this is going to be a very very weak CB to try to follow out

[21:34] <Peggy_Sue|UPN> OsRavan, will you absolutely help if goons bring in allies if we defend ?

[21:58] <OsRavan[ODN]> this btw is going to turn into a global war if we cant come to a compromise

[22:05] <OsRavan[ODN]> peggy. Seriously. I would seriously appreciate it if you could do me a favor and not get this blown up

Oh, Peggy! Peggy, please! PLEASE PEGGY! I'm about to cinch my term with MK and Umbrella treaties--This can't happen now! Please, please, please! OH, Peggy, Peggy just do this one thing for me! For the love of God, Peggy! Peggy I just said I would support you, Peggy, please, Peggy, please!

[22:07] <OsRavan[ODN]> let me blunt. i wont let this go to war even if i have to pay this out of my own pocket

Talk about falling apart after a few hours. From "I'll back you no matter what" to "I won't let this" in 120 minutes. That's gotta be a record. And it only cost you $30,000,000 and the SecGen's dignity.

What threat exists that the head of state of one of the oldest; one of the largest; and one of the most secure alliances on the planet has to pay tribute to avoid? What does the centerpiece of C&G need from anyone so bad? If it's power, I'll tell you this: That's not how you get more of it.

These are the folks telling me to do something. Let me be blunt. They won't let anything go to war--real, honest-to-God war--even if they have to pay for it out of their own pockets.

Funny, I seem to recall us getting quite a bit of praise from this. You? Not so much...

Well, snibb, I believe that's what we've just finished saying.

"Unfortunately for them their thrashing about only betrays their complete misunderstanding what politics actually is -- the struggle for power." Not PR. "And so the search for politics continues in vain, as those capable of creating it continue to box at shadows, either too blind or too fearful to challenge any of the real pillars of power -- to risk a loss and chase a meaningful win."

As for me, PR is nice, but it's never been a motivating factor.

Oh great Schattenman, please tell me what you would do if you were king of MK?

Licking up the crumbs thrown you way? It's kind of sad, really, how far Pacifica has fallen. Here's an idea, though. Start kicking out incompetent leaders and building a coalition. Perhaps you should start with removing your lame duck tech-broker-turned-emperor.

Give it a rest Schatt, you've brought this stuff up before, and we've explained our side of it. There was even a massive thread about it.

Right, Snibbmaster brings up month-old events for cheap points rather than addressing the argument, and I need to give it a rest. I'd tell you where you can put that but I happen to like you.

Who is the other? What safety threats to Umbrella and ODN face? What safety threats does MK face even during their week-long period of no treaties? What threats do VE, Fok/iFok, or Poison Clan face? GOONS was the only alliance that had any business looking for a bloc or more treaties, even if they faced no serious threats, and they did a bangup job. The simple fact of the matter is that while whiners and alarmists have been dragging out half-assed Hegemony 2.0 jokes and complaints for a year (to my great annoyance) the past cuple months have been nothing but a pure return to the mentalities of Continuum's heyday. There's no treat to anyone of any size, but they all can't help themselves from huddlign together and signing all sorts of redundant treaties and makingclaims as to their security when there is absolutely no threat to any alliance thathas made any big FA moves recently.

Settle down, Vlad. I read the article and saw your point. My response is valid and stands. Do something about it yourself. It's easier than ever before. We'll even let you plot in the open!

NPO has incompetent leadership?

That one is news.

Because when NPO was in power, MK was a powerhouse that just decided one day to take down Pacifica.

Believe it or not it takes some effort to enact change in global politics. So instead of writing these cute little essays complaining about the state of the world, how about you actually try to create conditions where change can actually happen.

Pacifica destroyed itself through its own pride, blindness and arrogance. Karma was not so much the moment NPO lost power as the test of just how universal NPO's power, reach and influence really were. They were found wanting.

The reason why Karma cast themselves as moralists is simply that it is easy to look like a moralist when compared to NPO. Everything is relative, after all.

Well, technically you were the one who brought up the #stratego logs first. But then, Snibbmaster's comment didn't have much substance to it, so I may have just misinterpreted.

I like you too, OOC. That's why I've endeavoured to remain civil to you, in this blog and elsewhere. Problem is, we've taken different IC positions. It's a shame in some ways. Oh well.

Like I said: Polar, STA, NV and AZTEC, Genesis and its bloc, plus NpO's various other allies (for example, TIO, and thus Sirius), TFD through NV and therefore NATO and CCC and some of TFD's allies (the former PnL sphere.) NATO will probably bring in NPO if the STA/NSO connection doesn't, and it'll certainly bring in Iron Curtain. Then it's a question of what side Duckroll takes. If they back the Orders, then they stand a shot, particularly if some of the neutral or undecided alliances come in.

I didn't reply, not because I was unable to respond to you, but because I've been losing interest and motivation in CN recently. I'd rather read a book, or even write, or have a life and go see Harry Potter 7 with one of my mates. It's hard to make serious, content-filled replies when you don't give a !@#$ anymore.

Thanks for the attention.

It always amazes me how the new attack on us is that we're now seeking attention and yet apparently we're so intensely uninteresting that we deserve blogs entries by great Pacifican heroes and 35 page threads of attention about an embassy closure.

Although I agree with this, I realize in these times there is little else to do.
