Message from the King of Cochin

To say that we are shocked at the graveness of this tragedy would be a gross understatement. President Mahinda Rajapaksa is a friend, in the course of our long alliance he has come to represent to ourself a relationship that transcends mere friendship. Me, our family and indeed our whole nation are extremely sad at the tragic passing away of a legendary statesman of our times.

Today Sri Lanka stands at the shell hole of a great tragedy, incapacitated by the loss of its top echelons of leadership. We express our deep hope that Ranil Wickremesinghe makes himself available soon enough to take on the mantles of governance. We hope that he has not met with the fate of his colleagues. Incapacitated though it is, Sri Lanka is a strong and resilient nation. We express our fervent hope and confidence that it will get itself back on the tracks and wreak the absolute vengeance on those inhumans who committed this crime. Do know that come hell or high water, the Kingdom of Cochin will be there to support you. Our prayers to the dead, our condolences to the bereaved and our encouragements to the survivers.

Sd,

His Highness Kerala Varma,
The King of Cochin

We offer our deepest condolences to the Sri Lankan people. The UFE condemns this latest terrorist act by the Cult of Dreamers. This scourge on Asia must be vigorously opposed, and we will continue to do so.

Question from a Manila Times reporter:

Have Sri Lankan authorities have determined if a link exists between this terrorist cell and the Cult of the Dreamer religion of the last decade?

[Announcement from PM Wickremesinghe]

"Sri Lanka has been dealt a hard blow by the terrorists of the 'Cult of Dreamers'. But we will not let them influence our lives or policies, other than the fact that counter-terrorist units are working even harder to root out the leaders and eradicate this tumor from Sri Lanka, and perhaps even all of Asia.
However, to ensure that our parliament does not unnecessarily obstruct the process of rebuilding our political landscape - almost 40 people were killed by the cult's attack - or disrupt our unity with useless squabbling, I am dissolving Parliament for the time being, but only until the next elections can be held.
Until then, to ensure that Sri Lanka continues to function, I will be working with several private entities such as CIII, Sostra Holdings and Vanguard to keep foreign relations offices, our police forces and several other important government services functioning.

Unfortunately, I do not yet know when we will be able to restore the government properly or hold elections. Things are very chaotic right now.

Thank you for listening."

With more resources being poured into space-related projects, especially the lunar colony, its construction and colonisation advanced considerably.
According to current plans, it was almost finished, space for 950,000 people being available, while almost 200,000 people were living up there already.
In the end, around 1,150,000 people were expected to inhabit the massive colony, stretching over dozens of square kilometers under the moon's surface, with hundreds of smaller constructions on the surface itself.

The sheer magnitude of the project was baffling, even though it did hurt Sri Lanka's economy somewhat; Fewer goods were being exported, standards of living lowered by a few percent in a relatively short span of time. Enough to be noticable, but not enough to complain seriously.

_____________________

Meanwhile, things in Sri Lanka itself began to change somewhat. The nation's political parties, having lost so many of their most important personae, were largely incapable of reorganising themselves into coherent entities. With the exception of the UNP, whose leader Wickremesinghe was still alive, most parties began to split into several smaller entities. Too many for proper politics, too varied and unfocused.
This inability to reorganise forced the PM to take steps in keeping Sri Lanka's bureaucratic wheels going: He had to delegate tasks that were the responsibility of the government, to corporations such as Sostra Holdings - who had experience in dealing with legal matters, foreign relations, etc - or CIII - who already operated most of Sri Lanka's prisons and labor camps.
Of course, being part of the conspiracy, Ranil Wickremesinghe gladly did so, in the end handing practically every last bit of Sri Lanka's government over to corporations, the only non-corporate position being his own soon enough - Prime Minister.

Most of this shift wasn't announced loudly, though Sri Lankan newspapers reported about it. Still, no announcements were made to the world. Unless they were interested in the nation's happenings, little would change in their perception.

With Transvaal having fallen into anarchy - perhaps another civil war, perhaps for good this time - and Arctica not having reacted yet, the decision was made to send two expeditions.
One, with a destroyer and two frigates, to the Crozet Islands, an archipelago far south, but in a strategically important position in the sub-antarctic region.
The second expedition was sent to the northern Seychelles. The most important of these was of course Mahé Island, which had an airport and a decently-sized harbour. Again, of strategic interest, if less than the Crozet Islands.

The objective was to determine whether there still were citizens of Transvaal alive. If so, they would be given the chance to re-settle into a nation of their choice, with all money necessary for the move provided by Sri Lanka. If they wished to remain, they would have to become citizens of Sri Lanka and try to learn at least one of the national languages.
The corporate leadership doubted that Arctica would busy itself with a few dozen islands of relatively little value regarding resources, and only a small population. Predictions were that it would busy itself with keeping order on the continent.

The Saber class corvette CNS Kirpan (CV03) based at RCNB Crozet would sail out to meet the Sri Lankan warships and would invite them for a Bada Khaana at the naval base in East Island of Crozet. The Sri Lankan fleet was noticed by a GAL Parava of Royal Cochin Navy patrolling from its base at Naval Air Station Crozet in Possession Island.

Somewhere, someone would be fired for keeping the maps updated with the wrong affiliations for certain islands.
The Sri Lankan fleet declined the invitation, stating that they were on patrol and had to move westwards from here.

[Classified]

Orders were changed, and the fleet would be ordered to take control of Bouvet Island and, if possible, take South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. While those were considerably further away than the original objective, they still offered good locations for military outposts.

One of the frigates had been left at Bouvet Island to secure it against potentially contesting claims. It was expected that this would not be challenged.
However, to secure South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, the small fleet would have to split up. The Destroyer was ordered to secure the area sround the SSI, while the Frigate was to ensure no other nation could claim South Georgia.

Anyone attempting to get close was told, quite simply,
"These islands are claimed by the Republic of Sri Lanka.
Please leave immediately."

Despite this, the islands themselves hadn't been taken, of course. But that would happen over the course of the next days - same with the northern Seychelles, of course.
Considering that the HAe hadn't yet sent anything, it was unlikely anyone would be capable of properly contesting Sri Lanka's claims.

[Classified]

To ensure full supremacy over South Georgia and the SSI as well as Bouvet Island, a full carrier battlegroup was sent to secure them, in addition to a convoy of roughly 2,000 infantry, various vehicles and of course plenty of humanitarian goods as well as materials to build a base.
The carrier group consisted of 2 carriers, 5 submarines, 2 nuclear subs, 2 Battlecruisers, 3 Cruisers, 3 Destroyers and of Frigates and Corvettes 4 each.
A total of 25 vessels, around a fifth of Sri Lanka's entire navy.
Of course, the vast majority would be stationed elsewhere once the immediate time of tension was over and Sri Lanka's claims secured. Until then, they would continue to secure the homeland's assets.

Meanwhile, in the northern Seychelles, something of an embarassment happened as a landing craft closed in to the beach and, upon disembarking, the men on it learned that all of the Seychelles had been part of Arctica for a considerable amount of time.
Why and how nobody had changed the maps appropriately was entirely unknown.

Regardless, the expeditionary force removed itself from Arctica's territory soon enough, heading back home.

Von Braun's habitat domes

"Each of these hab-domes houses around 5,000 people and is able to supply them with almost anything they need almost indefinetely with relatively few required imports.
What is most interesting, the colony is capable of manufacturing almost 85% of the parts required for current transport and shuttle designs used by Sri Lanka. This figure is expected to rise near 100% as further facilities are completed and mining operations are expanded.
Even more so if another mining outpost can be built."

"There are two more things to be told.
Firstly, the plans for a large-scale freighter space vessel have been reviewed and approved. The vessel will, if fully loaded, have a mass of roughly 147,000 metric tons, more than 70 times the mass of most conventional space shuttles.
Three of these vessels are being planned right now, to transport material between the Moon and the Pezun stations, possibly the Space Elevator's GEO station. They will not realise their full carrying capacity until at least one more mining outpost is active on the moon."

"Secondly, the government has announced that there are plans for a large-scale space station near the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth-Moon system. This would be an average distance of 322,899 kilometers from Earth, and 61,500 kilometers from Luna.
With the latest advancements in propulsion techniques, the station could be reached in as few as 32 hours from Earth and in less than 6 hours from the moon.
No details are known as of yet about this planned station, aside from its name: Side 1, as per its Lagrange point."

With all issues resolved in the Atlantic Ocean, Sri Lanka's leadership looked at its options.
They had acquired Bouvet Island, the southern Thule island group and South Georgia. The first two were largely covered in glaciers, making it hard to do much other than claim an EEZ around them and build small military outposts.
However, the HAE had declared it didn't want a Sri Lankan military base on South Georgia. This meant that southern Thule and Bouvet would have to serve as bases - and their glaciers would have to be melted.
A considerable amount of work just to have a presence in the south Atlantic, but it was worth it in the leadership's eyes.
How they would achieve this, remove the glaciers?

Plans for a large satellite in geostationary orbit were drawn up to catch sunlight and redirect it downwards to the planet. Such technology had two applications.
The first, to change local climate, raise temperatures. The second, for the satellite to send microwave beams onto the planet and into a large dish, which would turn this beam back into power. Solar power via satellites and death beams from orbit.
The patent was filed immediately, for both of these types.

Not only solar power is possible, but also bringing light wherever it is needed. Using satellites with large mirrors, we can potentially make even the least habitable zones of Earth habitable, such as South Georgia, which we recently acquired, or Bouvet Island, which is covered in large glaciers.
What do you say? Shall we work together to make these satellites reality?"

"Cochin and Aeon have expressed an interest in the solar satellite."
"Not in Icarus?"
"Apparently not, unfortunately. Cochin explicitely did not want to get involved in technology that changes the environment."
"And Aeon?"
"The princess is utterly incompetent. She apparently doesn't even know what solar power is."
"Are you serious?"
"Utterly. She called solar power 'fanciful'."
"I...have no words."
"Neither have I. With this, we cannot rely on her. We must develop Icarus on our own."
"Too bad. Ah, well. It could be worse."
"Indeed it could. Oh, by the way: We might be able to use the scavenged Korean satellites for this."
"Recycling! I like that."
"Of sorts. Anyways, I've had an artist make a picture of how this could look like."
"Let's see it."

"Actually, there's not a whole lot to pursue."
"Wait, what?"
"We already know how to make everything, from the mirror-'sheet' to the satellite itself."
"I...Uh...Okay, then build it?"
"I've taken the liberty and ordered plans drawn up for construction. We will be able to begin within the next days."
"Well, that's unexpected. Nothing for me to do!"
"I'm sorry, should I just have kept the project lying around for you to pick up? I don't think that'd been an efficient use of your time."
"True enough. Ah, well."

"Ladies and Gentlemen,
Citizens of Sri Lanka.

It is with a heavy heart that I make this announcement.
I have deliberated for a long time, but taking into consideration that Sri Lanka's major political parties have still not been able to reorganise and have largely fallen to chaos and infighting, this is a sadly necessary move.
From this moment on, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka exists no more. I step down as Prime Minister, leaving the stage to another."

He took a step back, then stepped to the right of the podium. The woman, Laura, took his place.
