1. Task Force 43 The rescue operation was underway with the 14 helicopters making their way across the city. It was a difficult task, there had to be dozens of AAA batteries scattered across their path. One Chinook with supplies was hit and went down and exploded when it crashed into an apartment building. Another was heavily damaged and had to return to base for repairs. The rest were doing alright though. Halfway through three OVA-10 Broncos met up with them and began seeking out anti-aircraft emplacements. While armed with machine guns and rockets they mainly went down low to report AAA positions to the helicopter gunship escorts and scattered artillery units who responded immediately to the priority missions. All in all no more helicopters were lost to anti-aircraft fire. Republic Chancellery Lt. Colonel Teal'c was told by his RTO that the choppers were arriving soon and he began to hear them several minutes later. Two helicopters could use the roof of the Chancellery to land, this is where the Chancellor and his staff would be evacuated. The wide spacious area around the Chancellery could accommodate the rest. The Chinooks came first, cutting loose their cargo nets above the dropzone. His organized runners ran out to sort and ferry the supplies around the perimeter. Two Pavelows landed on the roof while the others landed on the lawn. In total 154 troops hopped off and rushed to reinforce the crumbling perimeter. On the roof the Chancellor and his staff were being rushed onto the awaiting Pavelows. The pilots were screaming for them to hurry up. A radio call just came in saying separatist Phantoms were heading their way.
2. Altaria AFB Colonel Talberton was surveying what remained of his command. The final attack had been a big one, it had to have been at least two regiments in size, and his forces had sustained heavy casualties. They probably would have lost too if it weren't for the arrival of two mechanized infantry companies. What really surprised him was that these were Drengin units Most had defected to fight against the federal government hadn't they? No matter. They saved his $@! and he wasn't going to question their motives. Now he had further orders to fulfill. A quick report showed that many aircraft had been destroyed on the ground but there were more than enough working for his requirements. He was watching as the preparations went on and periodically checked in as to what was happening in the capital. The situation wasn't good at all and he had many requests for evac or air support but the current mission took top priority, no matter what. His aide walked into the base control center, "Colonel sir. Prep is almost done. The choppers will be in the air within five minutes. Six Cobras, four Pavelows and four Chinooks ready to go. We also have volunteers from the new arriving companies to act as reinforcements." "Fine, get them onboard. Try not to dump too much ammo though" The captain saluted quickly and ran out the door. In terms of actual fixed wing aircraft he had eight OVA-10 Bronco Recon birds, ten C-130s and (most importantly) eight F-4 Phantom fighter aircraft. Those would be in the air within 15 minutes to provide air cover for the evac operation. His concern was the widespread presence of hostile AAA throughout the city and the fact that Drengonia AFB had completely defected and had several F-4s as well. Loyalist base personnel had managed to destroy a number of them to prevent capture but it wasn't really sure how many they managed to get. Brave souls. They were probably killed on the spot. A call went out over the radio. The operation was beginning and the choppers were heading for the Chancellery. Republic Chancellery Grand Chancellor Mancer and his cabinet were occupying the conference room in the Chancellery's underground security shelter. "What are our options for putting an end to this civil war?" he asked. Ministers Vega Arco and Kona Tulha looked at each other and Tulha began to speak. "Projections have been run and we are fairly sure this conflict will go on for a while, the earliest possible conclusion we're looking at is several months. The projection goes up to five eyars. We also were not able to determine who would ultimately win this war as both sides are fairly evenly matched. Our studies did show that most Altarian citizens do support the federal government but probably won't show any if they donb't feel safe doing it. This is problematic because we've heard that the separatists have loyalty militias roaming about who are 'protecting the people' from the federal government's corrupt and despotic hand. Of course nobody really believes that but they aren't going to say anything or give support if it means they are risking the lives of them and their families. Recon units have reported that several villages and towns have been completely razed and the inhabitants all killed. It's either the work of bandits, which is unlikely, or separatist military units which seems like a much more probable explanation. This civil war is turning very ugly and it's only been several days since it started." Foreign Affairs Minister Daki Maldo interjected. "What about the possibility of outside help? We could appeal to the international community to send humanitarian aid, supplies and troops to help us." Minister Tulha thought the idea through for several awkwardly silent minutes. "The idea has merit but there are several downsides that are possible in addition to the benefits. First off, we're in the middle of nowhere. I doubt most nations have even heard of the existence of the Altarian Republic. Second, the rest of the world seems to be fairly unstable, no attention will be given to us when there are major wars being fought and diplomatic crises developing. The final reason is our own nation. How credible would the federal government look if we had to rely on a foreign power to keep the country together? How much faith would the people have left that the government can take care of the nation?" Everyone was silent with the knowledge that everything he had said was probably true. Grand Chancellor Mancer finally spoke. Regardless of the consequences we must obtain some outside help. After we get set up under better conditions I want Minister Maldo to contact other regional nations and ask for assistance. Preferably supplies but if they do wish to send troops such an offer will be taken. If such a thing occurs Ministers Arco and Tulha shall devise a way to keep the foreign presence effective yet low profile. Understood?" He saw nods all around the table. Just then a captain knocked on the door and entered. "Chancellor, the evacuation helicopters are ten minutes away." He looked at everyone else in the room. "Ok people, let's get going. You know the plan."
3. With only several hours of notice the Altarian Federal Government was ill prepared for the unexpected coup attempt that was about to take place. It seemed like it happened all at once across the entire nation. Separatist militias began attacking military and police personnel. Many military units even defected to the separatists. While fighting was occurring all over the country the pitched battle that would determine if the initial coup would be a success or not was taking place in the capital city of Altaria. The situation was very bad in Altaria. From what General Arnold Arco could see the situation was almost hopeless. Almost. Not once in the history of their people had an Arcean ever surrendered to the enemy and he was not going to tarnish that legacy. The General was working from a makeshift command post in the Grand Chancellery. His main objective was to keep the Chancellor safe and get him to safety when, more like if, the opportunity arose. But right now they were in the security shelter under the building attempting to coordinate it's defense. His forces consisted of a reinforced company of the Altarian Republic Guard (some of the best Arcean soldiers he'd ever seen), a battalion of Arcean Rangers, and a tank platoon. He estimated he was facing at a least a brigade sized force, probably even more. Some reinforcements were on the way but it seemed like their main base got hit hard and they had been off the air ever since. The general turned to a major working at the main communications console who was waving him over. "What do you have for me Reynolds?" The major was still scanning the information screen while he was giving his reply "I tried contacting Altaria Air Force Base to request an evac but they say they're under heavy attack and won't be able to get anything through the city without it being shot down." General Arco was displeased and the scowl on his face showed it. "You tell those fly boys they better get their @#$% over here NOW! I- never mind. Put me on and I'll talk to them." The general took the radio phone offered by the major and began to speak. "Altaria AFB do you read me? This is General Arnold Arco. I don't know what the hell you guys are doing but you're going to have to give me a better answer than what you gave the major here." The man on the other line was an air force colonel, good. "General this is Colonel Talberton, I have assumed command of Altaria AFB. The CP got wiped out and I'm the next guy up. I'd like to help you out sir but they're hitting this base pretty hard. It would be hard enough to get off the ground let alone make it into the city for a pick up." The general snapped. "YOU LISTEN TO ME BOY! I am ordering a pickup of tier one personnel here at the Grand Chancellory! You WILL provide any and all forces available to complete this operation. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME NOW!?!? The colonel on the other end deflated abruptly. "Yes sir, I'll see what I can get up. Hold on for a second to get a quick look at the situation. Alright. I have I have a couple Chinooks and Pavelows on the pad ready to go along with some helicopter gunships for escort. They'll be up in ten minutes and it'll take another ten to get there. If they can make it through the city and out safely anyway. Is there anything else you need sir?" "No colonel. You're help is much appreciated, General Arco out". Now it was a race against time. Outside the Chancellery Lieutenant Colonel Teal'c was trying to lead the defense of the building. He was actually a junior officer of the Arcean Rangers but he was the last ranking officer left. Come to think of it he was one of four officers left in his unit. Command should have been transferred to an officer of the Republic Guard but it seemed their CO was dead too so he was in charge for now. His forces had sustained serious casualties but so far had been able to hold off the repeated waves of attacks. Things had gotten a lot easier with the arrival of seven M-60 Patton MBTs. Relegated to mostly just using their machine guns they did prove useful on numerous occasions. It seemed the enemy had tanks as well and over a dozen had mounted an attack on the building. Thankfully they were old M24 Chaffee light tanks and were more than easily taken care of by the M-60s. Now his main issue was their dwindling supply of ammunition. He was down to three magazines and he hadn't even been fighting that much, was he? Well, he had several men running ammo up from the Chancellery's armory but that supply seemed to be going fast as well. He turned to his RTO and said "Sergeant get General Arco on the horn ASAP" He was answered with a quick yes sir and was given the radio phone. "General this is Colonel Teal'c. I'm almost positive we can hold them off but we're going to need ammo, a lot of it. We're running really low here so unless you want us to use our guns as clubs we're gonna need some more." "Understood Colonel. Supplies are on the way as we speak, possibly reinforcements. Hang tight till then." "Yes sir". What the hell did the General think he was going to do? Launch a counterattack? While that idea appealed to him immensely he knew better. There was a lull in the fighting so he took the opportunity to inspect his positions. Most of them were pretty good, considering what they had to work with. After a rough count he estimated his casualties at 20%. It was going to be a long day.
4. THE REPUBLIC CHANCELLERY Tulha's motorcade sped along a route directly to the Chancellery. Even though it was an obvious target he saw that it would be fairly safe. Due to the attack the Capital Brigade was being mobilized and he saw troops and vehicles speeding around the streets. The 5th Infantry Brigade was also stationed in the city and that too was mobilizing, although at a somewhat slower pace than the expertly drilled Arceans. They arrived within five minutes and the Minister was rushed into the Chancellery. There he found that Chancellor Mancer had already called a cabinet meeting in response to the situation. As the minister walked in he was acknowledged by the Chancellor. "Greetings Kona. What the hell is happening here? With the attempt on your life Minister Arco and I have decided that we should deploy military forces until we know the situation in full. What is it you need to tell us?" Minister Tulha went into general detail about the plot, it's probable goals and capabilities, leadership and the fact that it was happening now. After he was done there was a long silence before the Chancellor spoke up. "Then we must fight to preserve our nation. I have no doubt this upcoming war shall be much more brutal and savage than all of the previous centuries of tribal warfare combined. We must act now to stop this from spiraling beyond our control. Minister Arco, mobilize all available forces that can be guaranteed to be loyal to the Republic. Once that is done those troops are to secure weapons storage facilities, major military and civil installations and to disarm units that will probably join the separatists when the time comes. Minister Tulha, you will call a meeting of the tribal leaders and inform them of the situation. You must check to see who will side with us against the Dread Lords. I will send someone over to the Republic Council to tell them what is happening and to attempt to gain their support. We have to move now people, the fate of the Republic in our hands." 5th Brigade Garrison Agent 8727 was in position on a hill overlooking the home of the 5th Infantry Brigade. The 5th Brigade was currently the only mixed unit in the military. The rest were created along tribal lines due to convenience and a fairly moderate sense of distrust and hatred. Irregardless the commander of the Brigade was definitely going to be loyal to the Republic, even more surprising considering he was a Drengin. Then again the leader of the Drengin people had risked death to support the Republic. That was going to make things a little harder on a strategic level but not here and now. The explosives had been placed over the course of several days before now. Several of 8727's men had managed to infiltrate, quite easily for some reason, the base and planted and armed the devices. The amount of explosives used made him happy. It was going to be a very nice fireworks display. "Phantom this is ghost. We are in position over." 8727 responded to the radio "Acknowledged, execute." He pulled out his remote detonator switch, about the size of a keyboard he laid it out in front of him and flipped off the safety. "Good bye Republic scum" The base was a frenzy of activity with the mobilization orders and a moderate portion of the unit had already been sent out but most of the men and equipment were still getting ready at the base. The first buildings to go were the main munitions dump and the fuel storage facility. Flaming diesel and gasoline flew through the air bathing nearby buildings and unprotected personnel in a sea of fire. The munitions dump was right next to the tank yard and the explosion sent several flying over a hundred feet into the air. Several barracks followed, their occupants screams cut short by the massive explosions. The Comm center was all but obliterated with the explosives placed throughout it. In the span of less that ten seconds the 5th Infantry Brigade was all but destroyed save for several companies who had managed to escape destruction or were off base at the time. 8727's job was complete. The sound of a massive explosion to the north was the sound of the second mission completed. Chambers of the Republic Council Agent 8353 was watching the the building from the rooftop of a building down the street. After receiving the go ahead from 8727 he armed his explosives and detonated them. The Chambers were obliterated in an horrendous explosion that took down several other buildings in the vicinity. Anyone who survived that had to be really lucky. 8353 packed up his gear and left in his vehicle before police and military units arrived at the scene. This marked day one of what was going to be a terrible and bloody civil war.
5. The Minister of Internal Affairs was back to work in his office. Kona Tulha had taken over a week off of work because he felt violently ill and his doctor diagnosed him with a moderate cause of pneumonia. In reality he was at home thinking of what his role was to be in the upcoming war in his new nation. On one hand he had signed up for this and there was no turning back on the Dread Lords. Not if you wanted to live anyway. But as the leader of the Drengin people he had a vested interest in keeping the new nation together. There was peace and stability. Most of his people were fairly happy with the others slowly seeing the benefits of all the tribes uniting as one entity. Unfortunately the new Republic was going to be tested soon and Kona new his position would, probably, have a large influence on the outcome. Since the Minister had returned to work violence levels had rapidly dropped across the nation. The media and the people attributed this to his excellent administration and leadership but he knew better. The separatists were being funded and supplied by the Dread Lords and they were merely massing their strength for the final move. Defense Minister Arco and Grand Chancellor Mancer had thought of this possibility on their own and they felt that it was a high probability. The only problem was that the Republic Council overrode the Chancellor's request for extended emergency powers. That vote had no doubt been influenced by a higher power. The Drengin people would, for the most part, follow Kona's decision no matter what. The only problem was that his people were among the most cunning and deceptive people in the new nation. Trust was not something he could afford to give out lightly. The only people in the government he knew he could trust were the Chancellor, the Defense Minister and that wasn't helping right now. Other than that he trusted only his aide and his bodyguard (the Drengin Royal Guards had an honorable record of absolutely no betrayal). Minister Kona was informed over the intercom by his aide that he had an unscheduled visitor that he needed to verify. He walked out into the waiting area and had a look around. Immediately as he stepped out he noticed the two guards flanking his door. Arceans of the new Ranger battalion that Defense Minister Vega had sent to beef up his personal security. His own body guard was occupying a desk in the far right corner of the room which couldn't be seen by entering visitors until They walked past it. His visitor looked very familiar, mainly because Kona had seen him working for the Dread Lords on various errands and missions before and his heart sagged at the sight. He had hoped for just a little more time to make a decision. Nevertheless, the minister acknowledged him. "Yes I know this man." He looked over to the man and said "Come in. We have much to discuss." Just before re-entering his office Kona glanced over to his body guard who acknowledged the signal. The guest took his seat and the Minister went to sit at his. While doing so he quickly pressed the button on the side of his computer display, presumably to turn it off and direct his full attention to his guest. The button had in fact activated the signal to his bodyguard's office to be alert. The Minister's guest cut strait to the point. "They want an answer on your position now". While this was expected Kona still didn't like it at all. Even though he knew the answer to the question he was about to ask he asked it anyway. "Is there any possibility I could have a little more time to mull things over?" The man just sat stone faced. "You know that is not going to be possible. We've given you over a week to make a decision and now is the time to decide. Where does your loyalty lie?" Kona Tulha had been called many things, most of them untrue. Heartless, cold, brutal, disconnected with reality. All patently false. He was first and foremost a man who looked after his responsibility and right now that responsibility was the Drengin people and, by extension, the entire Altarian Republic. He made up his mind to live up to that responsibility. "No. My answer is no. I refuse to help destroy the peace and harmony that so many had struggled to obtain. I do this with the knowledge that you are not just a messenger." He had already pushed the button under his desk. Without a word the man pulled out a silenced pistol and began to aim it. Just as he did the office door was broken down as the two Arcean guards burst in in response to his alarm call with his own bodyguard right behind him. Seeing the threat all three raised their weapons and brought down the man with a hail of gunfire. Not stopping even after they saw he was down the Arceans pounced onto the man's body to ensure he was in fact dead and not attempting some sort of suicide maneuver. Kona's bodyguard dragged him out into the waiting room and then downstairs to the building's main security station which had just exploded into a frenzy of activity. Mostly Drengin security personnel they armed themselves and stood watch over him like hawks while his security motorcade was arriving. Once inside the driver said "Where do you want to go. I'd recommend the nearby capital guard garrison." "No, straight to the Republic Chancellory." "Yes sir." The order went out over the radio and the Chancellor had been informed about what had just happened and that the Internal Affairs Minister had to 'urgently' see him. He just hoped that it wasn't too late to make a difference.
6.
"We hope it shall too. That is all we had to say, unless you have any issues you wish to bring up?"
"No, I don't really have anything more to discuss. But if you ever need to contact me over anything I will always be available. Mostly. With this being the conclusion of our business I bid you farewell until our next meeting."
7. Netro Mancer, Grand Chancellor of the Altarian Republic "Let this be the start of a beautiful and mutually beneficial friendship between our two great nations! Are there any other matters you would like to discuss or does this wrap up this meeting?"
8. Hey, I was looking through this thread and found that pimp my gun thing and that was pretty cool. I like just playing around with it and all. I just want to know, is there something similar for vehicles? Anywhere I can make a custom model? Cause I remember my cousin said he just used MS paint for all his stuff but I'd like to see something like that cause I don't think I'd be able to use MS paint to make a detailed vehicle.
9. The Altarian Republic is a Federal Republic with two parts. Executive (headed by the Grand Chancellor) and Legislative (the unicameral Republic Council). My nation itself is a combination of warring tribes that generally despise each other and the main purpose of the federal government is to keep the nation together and deal with a variety of other things. The states themselves are different tribal regions and each state has two Councilmen on the Republic Council. The database provides a better account of history and organization.
10. THE TROUBLES Today marked the first time combat occurred between separatist forces and the Altarian Military. It occurred in the city of Oxor when a police unit started to investigate suspicious activity at an abandoned warehouse. It turned out to be a base of operations for a separatist militia and the army was called in to apprehend them. They succeeded in escaping and spreading out over several city blocks before the army arrived. The battle raged for hours with helicopters and even two tanks being called in for support. The military claims it has killed twelve separatists and captured fifteen others while losing eight men in the battle. In response to this incident the Defense Minister Vega Arco has ordered the mobilization of all available military units and has submitted to the Republic Council a request to enlarge the military saying "I feel that there is something dark on the horizon for our nation. A civil war to shake the foundation of our Republic. We must take the necessary steps to deal with this now or our Republic shall fall and forever be enshrouded in darkness for centuries to come". It is unknown if the council will approve the request for additional military funding in the absence of the Grand Chancellor and the slight but growing lack of trust in the military's ability to stay out of politics.
11. "I think that is a good start for our nations. I'll have to see if the Republic Council shall approve the treaty whenever we get it into a completed form. I'm almost sure that it'll go through. Hopefully this shall develop into a very good relationship between Nunavut and the Altarian Republic."
12. "I feel that that is an excellent idea. It would be better if both of our nations get to know each other better, especially with our close proximity and all. What exactly did you have in mind?"
13.
To Eva Aariak, I shall accept this invitation to your nation so that we may speak on matters concerning both of our great nations. -Netro Mancer, Grand Chancellor of the Altarian Republic
Chancellor Mancer had decided it would be better for him to attend this meeting rather than sending an emissary or even the foreign minister. Things at home were still very shaky but others would be able to handle it, maybe even better than he himself could. His security detail had been increased threefold since the start of the various attacks. A convoy of 30 vehicles, including ten from the army, headed off to the Altaria International Airport where the Chancellor's private 737 was waiting on the tarmac with yet even more security. He was driven all the way to the steps of the aircraft and boarded it. They were in the air in five minutes and were set on a course for Nanavut. It didn't take very long and soon enough they were about to cross into Nanavut airspace. "Tower, tower. This is Echo Alpha two-thre-niner requesting permission to enter Nanavut airspace. Do you copy?" (OOC: I guess for expediency you should rp the landing and the arrival to wherever they go to meet.)
14. The Altarian Republic recognizes and welcomes our new regional neighbors. -Daki Maldo, Minister of Foreign Affairs
15.
Being a new nation in the Arctic region the Altarian Republic would like to extend ties to other nations in the area and this seems like an organization that would be able to help us do that. Seeing as our nation hasn't really engaged in too much diplomacy for the membership of the Confederation of Arctic Nations to make a decision on whether to accept us or not we would like to apply for observer status in order to start ties that will, hopefully, in the future blossom into a great friendship. -Daki Maldo, Minister of Foreign Affairs
16.
Even though we do not really have any vested interest with this crisis we implore all nations involved to stop this escalating level of war and hold an actual and authentic diplomatic talk over this matter. War is never good for anyone involved. A peaceful solution to this issue must be found before many thousands are killed in useless fighting. -Daki Maldo, Altarian Minister of Foreign Affairs
17. CHANCELLOR'S SPEECH Grand Chancellor Necro Mancer has addressed the nation today in regards to the growing levels of violence and terrorism throughout the Republic. "My fellow citizens. These are grave times for us all. Since our nation was formed it has been standing on unstable ground. Today was another day filled with death and destruction. The killing of innocents and the brave soldiers and police officers continues. With the violence getting out of hand and the local state's inability to stop it I am taking the following steps. First, martial law is being declared in the cities of Altaria, Drengonia, Oxor and Altaris. Second, a curfew of 6:00 PM will be put into place for all citizens not involved in essential public service activities. Anyone violating curfew will be suspect to detention without trial. Third, the military and police shall be given the power to detain anyone involved in violent mass rallies or riots that threaten the public safety without trial. Fourth, all police officers and units shall be integrated into a single police force to operate under the Department of Justice. I truly wish these steps were not necessary but the situation has grown out of hand. I urge the people of this new Republic to obey these emergency measures so we can restore peace to the nation. Good night." RISING VIOLENCE Today 63 more people were killed in three bombings and four shootings. The three bombs targeted a shopping mall, a stadium and even an elementary school. Two police stations were attacked by gunmen resulting in the deaths of eight of the gunmen and five officers. The other two shootings were directed at local city officials including the Police Chief of Oxor and the Mayor of Altaris.
18. Due to the lack of other offers the Altarian Foreign Ministry is extending the deadline for oil field development bids to the middle of August.

20. Today the famous Altarian councilman Gilyord Hnils was killed in an ambush by an unknown separatist group today along with his entire security staff and three other people who's identities are being withheld until notification of their next of kin. This shocking news tops off nearly a whole week of rising violence including eight bombings of military and police patrols and several gun battles resulting in 32 deaths and 97 injured people. Internal Affairs Minister Kona Tulha is still bedridden and couldn't be reached while Defense Minister Vega Arco declined to comment on the days activities. Several anonymous government officials reported that the implementation of martial law is being considered as an option as well as further mobilization of the military. In response to the death of councilman Hnils and the rising levels of violent actiivites, widespread rallies and protests have formed. Some turned into riots with military and police forces having to disperse the crowds with tear gas and water cannons as well as temporarily detaining over 310 rioters and looters. Grand Chancellor Mancer declined immediate comment on the situation but said that he would be addressing the nation about it soon.
21. The Republic capital of Altaria was a very beautiful city, built up over many generations with the generous marble quarries not too far away from the city itself. It was only natural that this city, with the necessary infrastructure and aesthetic touch, was selected to be the new nation's capital. Altaria was designated as a federal city, meaning that the federal government would maintain day to day operation of the city. This also meant that it would be very heavily guarded which was noted by a man driving a white van with heavily tinted windows. Agent 8727 didn't have a name anymore. All traces of his existence were destroyed when he entered the Drengin Intelligence Agency, easier done with the fact that he had no living family. 8727 had done well during his training and was selected immediately after academy training to work as a field agent. He'd done well and was promoted to the point where he himself began to run the operations. Nevertheless he felt there was nothing wrong with still working in the field alongside his subordinate agents. It was something he valued doing. With the formation of the Republic. 8727 was integrated into the new Altarian National Intelligence Agency. He had always resented the Altarians and (even more) the Arceans. Now he possessed the utmost hatred for the two peoples that forcibly integrated his nation and exiled his tribe's leader. But that was all going to change soon. It was in fact 8727 who was responsible for the rising terrorist activities throughout the Republic. He was the one providing the necessary weapons and equipment to the various separatist groups and helped them coordinate their attacks. He had even lead several attacks himself, although he new he shouldn't really be doing that kind of stuff with his knowledge of the operation. Even so, this provided him with opportunities for revenge and he looked past that. His target was up ahead, the security convoy of an very important politician and public figurehead. He observed the security detail escorting the man out of the building to his car and noted that there were three others with him as well. Excellent. He had a man on the security detail, the second in command actually. He saw him giving the prearranged signal that the stage was set and he got into the first SUV. The convoy started moving down the street and 8727 ordered his driver to follow them at a safe distance. They were going down Sunset Avenue, the very place the operation was supposed to commence. He gave his short wave, encrypted radio three taps to signal the start of the attack. As the convoy started going through the intersection a semi-truck was speeding perpendicular to their position. The first vehicle got through and the second was broadsided by the semi, killing the occupants instantly. Out of the side door of the semi poured two dozen attackers armed with assault rifles and RPGs who began to fire on the convoy. The third vehicle in line completely crumpled to the barrage of automatic weapons and finally received an RPG through the windshield exploding the vehicle. To take care of the next vehicle about four RPGs fired and all four missed. 8727 cursed their incompetence and saw that the convoy was about to escape. No matter. He opened a black box that revealed a small control panel. He flipped the safety switch and pressed the button. The politician's vehicle exploded from the bomb planted there by his inside man. There were still three vehicles which moved to form a barrier with their vehicles while the body guards returned fire. While the politician was the primary target, his guards were still important. They were sending a message. Nobody was safe. 8727 ordered the driver to pull alongside parallel to the guards. He gave the order and the van's side door slid open revealing a minigun mounted in the center of the van as well as five other men with automatic rifles and rocket launchers. It was over in less than a minute, nobody was left alive after that display of firepower. The driver was ordered to flee the scene immediately as sirens were heard wailing in the distance. They rendezvoused with the inside man at an abandoned warehouse in the industrial district about two hours later. The man had killed the other three occupants of his car and then slipped off in all of the confusion. 8727 congratulated him on a job well done but reminded him that this was only the beginning of the plan. Things were about to get much more worse.

23. Defense Minister Vega Arco was busy rushing through various parts of the Ministry of Defense building attempting to sort out various messes in addition to dealing with the recent crisis going on. Every day for the last three days he had woken up to reports of numerous shootings, bombings, kidnappings and many other terrible things. These were being perpetrated by various separatist groups, some seeming to actually be working together, according to his intelligence liaison. This wasn't supposed to be his problem. Internal Affairs Minister Tulha should have been handling these things but he was sick and his personal physician said he wouldn't be able to work for at least a week, probably more. The deputy IA minister was struggling without his boss and things weren't going as planned. In fact the Internal Affairs ministry wasn't even fully organized and functional yet. Neither was the Ministry of Defense now that Vega thought of it. Even before the terrorist incidents he was having a hell of a time integrating military units from the different tribes into a unified fighting force. While some didn't really mind all that much tribal rivalries stood out and many others refused to be in the same units as former enemies. As a result many units were being segregated in the name of expediency with the intention of integration once things settled down. Minister Arco knew that this was a bad idea for practical and ideological reasons. Ideologically the new army was supposed to be a force fighting for a new Republic where tribal rivalries were no longer an issue, which was definitely not the case inside or outside the military. Practically, loyalty to the Republic could not be assured from these segregated units. It would be all too easy for them to split off and fight for their own leaders against the other tribes or the Republic if it came to it. Theoretically he had about 30,000 men under his command organized under several major units. In all actuality there were only four brigades actually active and only one of those was an integrated unit. The premier unit was the Arcean Capital Brigade. This was going to be the exception to the integration orders as it was decided that the Arceans should be given the honor of protecting the capital as a result of their fighting abilities and guaranteed loyalty to the Republic. The other three brigades were made up of Altarians, Drengins, and a mixed unit respectively. There were also three armored battalions as well, one mixed, one Altarian and one Drengin. The newly created Special Operations Detachment was composed entirely of Drengin soldiers considering that was more in line with their fighting style. While it shouldn't be this way politics was ever present in the military and Minister Arco was going to have to play the power game in order to get the Ministry of Defense up and running. Equipment was also somewhat of an issue. Different units had many different assortments of equipment, most reported in with the weapons they were issued by their tribes. While many were the same this complicated logistics and hindered battlefield performance. The Altarian units always had the best weaponry available and so when they were formed into units they possessed weaponry many other tribes didn't like assault rifles, rocket launchers, aircraft and even tanks. Even now many units composed of other tribes were still using semi automatic weapons like the M-14 or even bolt action rifles like the Springfield! Imports and manufacturing of standardized weapons and equipment was supposed to be able to replace all outdated weapons but it seemed that was going to be several months in the making. In the meantime priority on new munitions had been given to important or elite units with more moving down the line once those units were equipped. On top of all these issues now he had to deal with the rising levels of terrorist activities. With the inability of the Internal Affairs Ministry to solve the problems Grand Chancellor requested that the military assist. As a result Minister Arco had deployed the newly formed Arcean Ranger Battalion as a major counter-terrorist unit and had various other units patrolling major cities and important government facilities. Several dozen of his men had already died in various shootings and bombings directed at military patrols and checkpoints. Nobody said his job was going to be easy but still, he couldn't wait for this time of hectic activity to pass and so he pressed on with his daily routines faster than normal.
