*Republic Square, Downtown Nedopolis, Republic of Nedland. 12:00 PM, February 13th, 2010.* "Hello, I'm Rachel Freda and I'm reporting to you live from Republic Square. President Ned is just about to give his State of the Nation address!" Rachel Freda said into her camera. "We're estimating that there's a crowd of nearly two hundred-thousand people here today to watch the speech," she continued as her camera panned out on the crowd. She gestured for her cameraman to get a close up on President Ned. President Ned walked out onto the stage that had been set up in front of the Nedland Congress Building. He stopped in the center of the stage and stared out across the crowds. Although he was a bit nervous about the crowd, he had done this many times before. He adjusted the microphone that was in the center of the stage, and glanced at his teleprompter (he had opted to use them instead of note cards this time). Holding up the microphone, Ned began his speech (occasionally glancing at the teleprompter): "Friends, Nedites, countrymen, it has been a very eventful year. Nedland has played a greater role in world events this year than it ever had before. We have gained the respect of many nations, peoples, and leaders, and I would also like to note that we ourselves have gained a greater respect for our nation. In addition, we have also gained in other ways: in population, in wealth, in knowledge, and in military strength. But these advancements did not come unearned. We Nedites have always shown that we can rise above petty injustices and oppression. We have always shown that we can stand up to others who would rule over us and demand our rights. Think of our history. Remember the natives who defeated the Spaniards despite being outnumbered and with lesser technology. Remember the revolutionaries, who stood up to the most powerful empire on the planet to demand our right to be independent. Remember the guerrillas, who fought a war in the jungles against a tyrannical regime that had the support of the most advanced nation on the planet. And now, remember how we stood against the Sons of Shining Truth, who sought to force their ideology on the rest of our nation. Remember how despite the fact that the war in Afghanistan's controversy, we won there. And finally, remember what happened last summer, where a nefarious plot to destroy Nedland was defeated by the people of this great nation! Let us remember all of these incidents, and when others tell us that we are not significant, that we are not important, let us remind them of these events to show them how we are significant, we are important, just as every human being on Earth is! But Nedland is ready to take on these threats! She is ready to join the other powerful nations in keeping the world safe. She is ready to show the world that we will stand strong against this intolerance. Nedland will not vanish without a fight, she will not go quietly into the night! We're going to do our best to help the world against these threats. We're going to stand strong, we're going to be ready! We can and will do it! Our influence stopped the Carden Dictatorship, but before that, we held the line! Our influence stopped the SST, but before that, we held the line! Our influence stopped Robertson and Willard last summer, but before that, we held the line! In the modern world, we will hold the line against injustice. Nedland will prevail!" The crowd cheered as soon as Ned finished. Husbands and wives hugged. Friends shook hands. Soldiers saluted. It was clear to everyone that a new era in the history of Nedland had begun. OOC: It looks like I will be quitting CN in the next few days. I've been really busy with school, and to be quite frank, I haven't been having as much fun with this game as I used to. But I'd just like to say that it's been great RPing on these boards. The RPs I've been in have all been fun, and I'm going to miss everyone here. I hope you all have a great time with your RP's in the future .

His father, Edward Miles Bartowski II was a leader of a guerilla movement against Carden's government, and as a result Ned's father was constantly away and Ned was under the scrutiny of his classmates and teachers at the upper class school he attended when young. This injustice, in addition to the poverty and opression Ned would witness on a daily basis in the streets of the capital city of Nedopolis influenced Ned greatly. By the time he was in his teens, Ned was a socialist radical and an atheist, similar to his father. However, Ned was also influenced by the American scientist, Carl Sagan, who preached a message of science and democracy. By the age of 15, Ned was actively involved in the resistance to Carden, while remaining an honors student at his school. At the end of 1989, Carden's government collapsed and Ned's father found himself as the leader of Nedland. Although Ned was close to his father, he could not help but object to his father's refusal to hold democratic elections, and this would drive a wedge between the two for some years. In the 90's, Ned traveled around the world, visiting many places in Europe, Asia, and South America. When Ned returned in 2001, the relationship between him and his father had healed, and as part of Edward II's spoils system, Ned was appointed as the Minister of Foriegn Affairs. Four years later, Ned's father died, and Ned was selected to replace him. Ned began to liberalize Nedite society soon after his election, allowing free elections and enterprise. However, he has come under attack from both the political left and right; and had to deal with several rebellions against his presidency (the Sons of Shining Truth Insurgency of 2008 and the July 5th Revolution of 2009 to name a few examples) and also a coup attempt by his Secretary of Education in late 2008. Love him or hate him, he has a unique and quirky style of governing, and is still the President of Nedland today. His hobbies when not working as President include reading a good novel from time to time, studying history, and playing video games. She was also involved in her father's resistance group, although not as much as Ned due to her age. In school she was academically gifted, and excelled at swimming. After the revolution was successful she served as an activist for her father's policies. Later, she would join Ned for part of his travels around the world. When she returned, she was given the position of Minister of Healthcare by her father, and upon his appointment to the presidency, Ned did not change this. Later, in 2007, she was promoted by Ned to the position of Vice President, a position which she retains to this day. Known for her humor, Vice President Rowan's hobbies when not working include reading all of the books she can get her hands on, visiting animal shelters and national parks, watching Star Trek, and playing pranks on her brother and other members of the cabinet. Affiliation: Republic of Nedland, Nedite National Congress Party Description/Life Story: Heather was born to a working class family in Nedopolis, but she distinguished herself in high school for her smarts and got herself a place at Nedland State University (which she preferred to the alternative, University of Nedland, where Ned and Rowan went). At the University, she was on the cheerleading team and, although smart, was described as a bit stuck up by other students. She was indirectly involved with Ned II's resistance movement, and through this met his son, current President Ned III. Heather and Ned hit it off immediately and were soon good friends, until Ned left after the revolution. They would not meet again until late 2008, when Ned, in a meeting with atheist activist groups in the nation, ran into her again. They soon became friends again, and Ned appointed Heather as his secretary the following spring. It was at this time that Heather was married to a Nedite Special Forces Operative named Marcus Bellman. Bellman had a mistrust of Ned, as he always suspected that Ned was after his wife. Bellman's suspicions were true, but Ned never made any move on Heather while she was married. Eventually, their marriage fell apart when Bellman lashed out at his wife for remaining as secretary, telling her that she could either have him or Ned (he later became involved with a fellow special ops soldier, Natasha Neumann). Affiliation: Republic of Nedland, Nedite National Congress Party, Nedite Army Description/Life Story: As the older brother of Ned and Rowan, Nicholas was also involved in their father's resistance movement against General Carden. While having exellent grades in school, he excelled in combat and was working with his father in violent acts of resistance since the age of 16. Nicholas was always closer to his father than Ned was, which led to some rivalry between the two boys. Nicholas saw action in many of the battles of the western jungles during the resistance movement, and eventually led a group of soldiers in the capture of Nedopolis in 1989. Once victory was achieved, he served many more combat missions against anti-Ned II guerillas and eventually, the Sons of Shining Truth. Eventually he was promoted to general and was appointed the Commander in Chief of the Army by his father. When Ned III was appointed president, he allowed Nicholas to keep his job. While there is still some rivalry between the brothers today, they have mostly learned to live with one another. Nicholas is still the Commander In Chief of the Nedite Army today, and in his spare time he enjoys to play first person shooter and real time strategy video games, study history, and have a friendly round of boxing from time to time.

I would like to nominate my character, President Ned the Great of Nedland, for Best Character Development, because of his actions in this thread. I'd also like to nominate Nedland's War in Tazernostan for Worst War (Overall), Subtleknifewielder as Player of the Year (Promised Land/Australian Queendom was involved in almost all of the major events of the year), and New England for Most Influential North American Nation. I also think that there should be categories for Best Hero and Worst Villan.

Given that Karkarov pretty much admitted that his group committed the crime, by Occam's Razor we can deduce that the WLFN was indeed responsible for the crime. However, President Ned agrees that there is no need for violent revolution here in Nedland. We have fair elections, and it is certainly possible for a Marxist party to be elected via parliamentary means, as long as the had the support of the people.

President Ned of Nedland congratulates this new nation on their successful formation. It is good to see that the spirit of cooperation allows unions like this to form. We will be interested in working with the Australian Queendom in the future as we had with Promised Land before it. We also wonder if this nation will remain a part of the Global Peace Initiative as Promised Land was before.

President Ned thanks the Communist Party of the Australian Queendom for their comments on this issue. He notes that the Communist Party in Nedland also opposes these terrorists, which shows that the WFLN does not represent any true Communist movement. If Karkarov wants to promote his political ideas, then he should stop terrorism and use peaceful means instead. OOC: Hmmm, didn't see that coming . I'll have to go and reply to it... President Ned thanks the Communist Party of the Greco-Soviet States for their comments on these issues. While President Ned is not a Marxist himself (he used to be one, though), he does respect many Marxists for trying to make the world a better place. He agrees that the WFLN does not represent a real communist movement, only a corrupted Stalinist variant. Ned also thanks the Communist Party for their comments on the housing situation. President Ned is deeply committed to bringing about a better life for his nation's poor, and he is glad that the Communist Party recognizes that fact.

Matteo Cartez, the anchor of Nedland News, is sitting down at a table next to his co-host, Morgan Bellamy. Cartez: "Good evening, Nedland! Today we have some news that should bring warmth to the hearts of the poor here in Nedopolis, don't we Morgan?" Bellamy: "Yes, we do. The city of Nedopolis has begun its new housing project today. The project aims to build tenements for the poor of Nedopolis, and is being overseen by President Ned himself." Cartez: "These tenements will be built at low cost, and housing will be free." Bellamy: "President Ned and the others who are backing this project hope that it will better the living conditions of the poor of Nedopolis, and thus provide a stepping stone to those citizens so that they will be able to focus on work rather than on shelter." Pictures of the new tenements are shown. Cartez: "In accordinance with this new project, the shantytowns of Nedopolis are to be bulldozed; once the poor folks who lived in them are safely out of them, of course!" Bellamy: "President Ned says that this is just one step in his new economic plan, which he plans to unveil fully in December." Cartez: "In unrelated news, four bodies have been found in the slums of Nedopolis. Police believe the murders to have been committed by the Communist terror group 'The Worker's Liberation Front of Nedland,' or WLFN, based on a statement that the leader of the group, Imran Karkarov." Bellamy: "Karkarov announced a 'campaign for the liberation of the workers of Nedland' soon after the bodies were discovered. He announced that members of his group will do anything and everything they can to overthrow the government of Nedland unless certain conditions are met." Cartez: "Their conditions include nationalization of all industries in Nedland, a ban on the practice of religion, and the construction of memorials to President Ned II (the current president's grandfather and the Communist dictator of the nation back in the 90's) and Josef Stalin, and the overthrow and execution of President Ned. President Ned says that the military will fight these terrorists with their full might. Bellamy: "Due to President Ned's recent refusal to adapt the nation to socialism, Karkarov appears to be attracting a base of support among the working class. However, the majority of Nedite citizens and the Communist Party have condemned this terrorist group." Cartez: "So, be on the lookout for the WLFN. Anyway, we'll have more news coming up at seven! Up next is the premier of the American sci-fi series, V. Goodbye, and always remember, Nedland prevails!" Nedland News

President Ned of Nedland, himself an atheist, has this to say to the Atheist Agenda Party in the FRA: "You are no better than the Christo-Fascists. While I agree with you that religion often has negative consequences, it is simply not right to commit acts of terrorism against peaceful religious groups. By doing so, you are reducing yourselves to the level of the Religious Right, and thus are proving yourselves to be no better of an alternative than they are." Ned also denounced the American Front Party: "These fascists pretty much embody all that is bad in society. Let us hope that the people of the FRA do not make the mistake of supporting them in this election. To do so would be to invite a reactionary era embodied by human rights violations, religious persecution, and social darwinism upon the citizens of the FRA." President Ned finished his commentary by declaring support for the Progressive Way party: "This party is the path to the future for the FRA! While I'm in no position to be speaking in authority over the people of the FRA, they would do well to vote for the Progressive Way and bring about a more tolerant, equal, and rational future."

A Nedite reporter raised his microphone. "Edward Sagan, Nedland News. I'd like to ask what your stances regarding the Republic of Nedland are?"

President Ned of Nedland has praised the Italian Supreme Court's decision regarding this matter, one of the few things he agrees with the Italian government on.

President Ned of Nedland has endorsed the Conservatives in this election, although he finds their choice of name ironic considering that they want to end the power of the aristocracy.

President Ned's administration in Nedland echoes Promised Land's position on this matter: "Like we saw in the Soviet Union, Communist China, and various other examples in the 20th Century, collectivization of industry doesn't work. May I ask of the DSPR how incentive will be provided to the workers who are all paid the same? And how can the government accurately follow the needs of the people through such large layers of bureaucracy? By far, it has been shown time and time again that a planned economy can not work. The best form of economy is a social democracy, or a capitalist state which adapts such socialist reforms as a safety net, welfare state, and progressive taxation."
