My New Avatar

Ashoka the Great

I am currently at war with a rogue who decided to hit Nordreich on his way out of CN. This individual didn't plan very well. He had plenty of nukes but not enough cash to sustain him beyond one round. By the time said round ended, he had dropped into my lowly range. He hasn't paid his bills in days and, if he were to collect, still wouldn't be able to pay them. Bill-lock after one round of war? How very embarrassing.

This has gotten me thinking about rogues in general. On one level, rogues are simply those dozens (hundreds?) of individuals who have made CN a little bit more entertaining during the long dry spells between major conflicts. Not every rogue is a 'Frans Josef' -- my personal favorite -- but they do at least manage to give some of us a reason to log in each day.

I have had six nations thus far, and the closest I've come to being a rogue was during the Vox movement, when I was elected a Senator on the Red Team. Having had a taste of being a troublemaker for the sake of causing trouble, I must say I liked it. It was fun. And, for those who didn't take their nations so seriously that they sent me wailing PMs of despair, it was fun as well.

So perhaps there's a little bit of a rogue in all of us. Perhaps all of us wish from time to time that we could break something simply for the sake of breaking something.

Therefore, as a tribute to the inner rogue who lurks within all our hearts, I'll be sporting a "NoR-ized" version of a certain banned member's original CN avatar for the next few days.

While I've had my own run-ins with this individual over the years, I must admit that on some level he symbolizes all the things that many of us wish we could do. We may be held back by our own sense of right and wrong, our own obedience to the (game's) rules, or perhaps our allegiance to a group of people. Nevertheless, in our darkest moments I think all of us wish we could just be troublemakers for the sake of causing trouble.

What I don't understand about rogues is why so many of them suck at war. CN war is not that complicated, you can do a lot of damage if you just save up a decent warchest before roguing out, even if otherwise you don't really know what you're doing.

The only rogue to attack me was a guy named Elfman. In the early days of Invicta, Elfman was one of the few guys who sold donations; as a result he had a bigger nation than mine. At the time he hit (a few months after Karma) I was at 8K infra and he was at 10K.

He'd left Invicta quite some time ago. Anyway he hit me, Dawny and I think Amonra, because he thought his nation was better than any of ours, as his NS was higher, and he was going to teach us how to war.

I did a gather intel right off the bat, and discovered he had a 200M warchest at his 10K infra. The word went out right away, don't fire CMs, just hit him with attacks that cause monetary damage. We all hit him with ground attacks and fighter dogfights, and I spied his cash.

The dogfights were awesome because he loved buying back planes, lol.

He was bill-locked after two nukes. It was embarrassing.

I sometimes wonder what that old boy is up to. Used to strike fear into hearts with his name, now it's all "who?"

I see him online (MSN, etc.) from time to time. I don't think he's up to anything CN-wise these days, although one never knows.

For a fleeting second I thought that was comradevader's avatar.

That's because it is, only with an Othal rune overlaid on it.

Hope you don't get busted for it not being Halloween, Ashoka.

I always figured he would eventually grow some armpit hair and discover girls, get something more interesting to do than fool around with us.

Nice to see some people do have some appreciations for 'rogues'

Fighting you was a lot more fun than Elfman. If there were lots of guys like you out there, the game would be better.

Eh.

"Going rogue" is the CN equivalent of knocking the Monopoly board over in frustration.

I'll admit it: after almost 4 years of slow, patient development, I'm quite attached to my nation. That doesn't mean I won't sacrifice it in a fight, but it would be a sacrifice. Rogues, as a general rule (or at least according to my own arbitrary definition) are not making a sacrifice. They're basically saying, "I don't care anymore, so F* it." You can't fight a rogue, you can only mobilize against them in order to limit the damage they cause.

Would I go out in a blaze of glory if the situation required it? Absolutely, and it would be a blast. Would I try to ruin what other people have built simply because I'm bored and/or angry? Not a chance. It seems so petty.

Four-year-old rogues don't ruin what other people have built. It takes a whole lot more than a week of war with one rogue, no matter how good, to "ruin" my nation, and I'm at 1260 days.

Not quite sure what would ruin it at this point actually. I've got nearly all of the wonders (I actually had a space wonder expire on me the other day, caught me offguard and made me go buy a wonder); I'm not sure how long I could fight a war for but none of the major world wars have made a dent in my warchest yet.
