Today, the government in Boston has approved the establishment of a daily newspaper, to be established in New York City. Titled The New York Times, the newspaper is to be owned by the government-sponsored New English media company, the New York Times Company, led by chairman Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr.

Headquartered in the New York Times Building in New York City, the New York Times is expected to exert great influence over reporting and journalism in the Republic of New England, and is even projected to establish as many as 16 news bureaus in New York State alone, including 11 national news bureaus and 26 foreign news bureaus. With backing and funding by the government in Boston, the New York Times is expected to establish a monopoly over much of the news media in the country. "I predict a great success for this establishment." Sulzberger Jr. stated in a press statement today. "Sure, it may be off to a slow start, but it will become successful before we know it."

NEW YORK CITY – Plans are now underway to revitalize a large part of the nation's road and railway infrastructure, especially in eastern New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. This is one of the government's ongoing efforts to connect the entire country together, as Boston is trying to amass enough funds for the project. "We have quite a work ahead of us." A New York politician stated on condition of anonymity today. "But I believe that we can pull out of it. After all, we have prospects for a great future."

BOSTON – After brief discussions, the government has approved for the funding of some $50 million for the revitalization of Boston, the capital and second largest city, after New York City. Similar initiatives are taking place in all states, most especially Albany in New York and Providence in Rhode Island. It is progressing pretty well so far, sources say.

BOSTON – The government has set the maximum tax rate to 30% today. The rate will be the same for all type of taxes, although heavier taxes may be imposed upon people with higher income as a means of creating a more 'equal society'. From this moment on, citizens are required to pay a percentage out of their wages to the government in accordance to the tax rate. In other words, they are required to pay 30% of their own salaries. The tax rate may be a bit steep, yes, but it is fundamental to the establishing of a 'communist society', where everyone is equal and there will be no injustice.

(OOC: As you might be aware of, this is my new news thread. OOC is ok, but keep them sparse, k? Unless it is reader feedback. :awesome:)

NEW YORK CITY – As a part of its ongoing efforts, the government has commissioned the establishment of a rapid-transit system. The New York City Subway, operated by the State of New York and owned by the central government through the New York City Transit Authority, is to provide a means of mass-transportation, to enable the city and the Republic’s inhabitants to get around. It is to be run 24/7.

800px-NYC_Subway_Times_Square.jpg

The New York City Subway is projected be the most extensive public transportation systems in the Republic of New England, if not the world. It is envisaged to consist of at least 468 stations, operating 229 miles of routes and 656 miles of revenue track, reaching approximately 842 miles of track. In addition to railway trains, the NYC Subway is to include maglev trains, which are to be the fastest in the Republic. That, and there are unconfirmed rumors that the NYC Subway will be EMP-proofed.

The NYC Subway is to have both ground and underground tunnels (ground for railway trains, ground and underground for maglev trains, on different routes and tracks). Subway stations are planned to be established all over New York City, especially in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. Various lines and routes are to crisscross New York City, all identified with a color to denote a specific route.

Construction of the new system will begin immediately, and will continue around-the-clock as the government embarks upon a plan to make public transport ‘available and plentiful’ for citizens.

SYRACUSE – Much of the information is classified, but it has been confirmed that the central government has issued orders to the states of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire to implement the formation of a National Border Guard.

The responsibilities of the new Border Guard, part of the New England Border Patrol (NEBP) under the aegis of the New England Customs and Border Protection (NECBP), is to enforce the security and protection of the borders of the Republic of New England, including preventing terrorism and the like. The Border Guard also will be tasked with regulating legal and illegal immigration, collecting excise taxes, controlling civilian movement, imposing quarantine, and preventing smuggling of illegal substances, along with others.

The Border Guard, NEBP, and NECBP will work together with the Ministry of National Security if necessary to achieve its purpose. Major border crossing points will be established in these following cities:

  • Fulton, Syracuse, and Windsor at the border with the Atlantian Federation.
  • New York City, Yonkers, and New Milford at the border with the Jersey Republic
  • Massena, Newport, Brockville, Newport, and Rouses Point at the border with Bohovia
  • Dover, Rochester, and Shelburne at the border with New France

Hundreds of minor crossing points will also be established all along the borders of the Republic of New England; forts and guard booths will also be built.

OOC: Sorry that I missed it, but whatever happened to Byzantium?

OOC: Massive civil unrest barely a couple of days ago. No, not a rebellion, per se, but the brothers Constantine were forced to flee for their lives.

NEW YORK CITY – With Boston’s approval, the State of New York has begun work into constructing a new airport. For approximately $60 million, the new airport is planned to be built upon 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land located on Long Island, in Queens in the southern portion of New York City.

379px-00610AD.svg.png

Projected diagram of the new airport

Operated by the Port Authority of New York, the airport is to be a major gateway in the Republic of New England, of which people could travel to different parts of the country, and the world. The airport is projected to encompass approximately 8 major terminals, all designed to provide services for airlines to wide-ranging destinations.

616px-Airports_New_York_City_Map_Julius_Schorzman.png

Location of the airport in New York City. It is denoted as (1) on the map

The airport will be interconnected with the rest of New York City, through its subway, railway, and commuter systems. It will be designed to be accessible through all form of transport, including but not limited to raid, bus, taxi, car, and even helicopters!

In honor of the current President, the City of New York has opted to rename the airport the John F. Kennedy International Airport (abbreviated JFK). Kennedy himself was reportedly touched by the news, saying that it was “a great honor, one that I do not deserve.” The airport will receive government funding, support, and protection.

Following the inception of the construction of the new airport, several government-sponsored corporations were established, including the JetBlue Airways Corporation (which will operate the airlines JetBlue Airways) and the New England Airways Corporation (which operates the airline New England Airways). JFK is expected to operate approximately 90 airlines from all parts of the world.

BOSTON – The entire nation is buzzing with activity as the government and people endlessly work into constructing a Communist society in the Republic of New England. And more, much more is planned for the short-term and long-term.

And that is in the form of the Public Construction Project. In the massive, government-sponsored effort, satellite cities and towns will be constructed around the major cities and towns, of which they will be interconnected via underground transportation and communication systems. The satellites will be connected to the major city or town’s central grids and generators (including electronics and the like), of which will be automatically recalibrated to a backup system should they be cut off for any reason. Each satellite city and town will house about 200,000 each.

Next, a few underground cities will be constructed in classified areas outside several major urban centers. The cities will house up to 300,000 each, and will provide an adequate standard of living, including housing, food distribution, etc. These cities is expected to take at least 15 to 20 years to complete, possibly more.

Construction has now begun, where the people will work for the glory of the Republic of New England!

(OOC: Any similarities to any existing initiatives/actions by other nations are purely coincidental. :awesome:)

BOSTON – To make financing the current ‘reconstruction’ projects easier, and to attract more foreign investment that would help to stimulate the economy, the government has set interest rates (on credit, mortgages, etc) in the country to an all-time low, at 3 percent. At the same time, the government has also introduced the issuing of government bonds, also known as “Communism bonds” to help finance all sections of the economy; as such, the government will raise taxes at it’s current rate of 30% to redeem the bond at maturity.

In addition, the government is in the process of reducing tariffs on imports from the rest of the world, and removing them altogether on imports from Canada and the rest of the ComIntern, which the government is currently applying into.

NEW YORK CITY – Unemployment rate is steadily decreasing as the government is making widely-varying jobs available to much of the population as per its promises. If current efforts are sustained, and even intensified, the unemployment rate could decline from 8 percent to as low as 3 percent (in New York City) and from 7 percent to about 4 percent (in the rest of the country) after five years. “3 Percent in Five!” has now become the rallying cry behind the government’s campaign to eradicate unemployment.

BOSTON – With its nation-building efforts currently underway, the government now turned its attention to agriculture. Stating that the farmer was ‘one of the most fundamental to the fostering of a Communist society’, the government now implemented a series of initiatives that was highly favorable to both the farmer and the government.

So, through the Agriculture Decree, the government authorized and funded the formation of cooperative farming organizations, of which farmers could voluntarily form an association with others as a means to increase food productivity and maximize profit. The government provided extensive support and incentives to farmers: in addition to state subsidized housing, farmers and these specializing in agriculture were provided government-backed credit of which to purchase farming supplies and equipment at discounted prices; their mandatory two-year state service was halved; they were granted up to 40% tax rebate in housing and other debts; they were allowed to own and maintain their own lands, free of charge; and they could sell their products and foodstuffs for profit.

However, despite all of these benefits and support, the government had implemented the initiative in such a way that the state wouldn’t be ‘held accountable to the farmer’: farmers could risk losing support and benefits if they failed to serve out their reduced state service or broke (or subverted) the law. In such a case, their lands would be seized by the government without compensation (but only after it was proven that the farmer(s) had indeed violated the law).

ALBANY – For reasons known only to the central government, a course of action was taken and ratified regarding the status of the capital of the State of New York. From this moment on, Albany shall no longer be the capital of New York; the State government shall relocate to New York City, where it shall convene in the historical Federal Hall.

800px-Federal_Hall_front.jpg

Federal Hall

Federal Hall served as the first capitol of the former United States of America, back in the time when New York City served as the interim capital of the fledging American republic. It was the site of George Washington’s inauguration in 1789, and it saw the passage of the United States Bill of Rights in 1791.

New York City, with a population of over 8 million, is the largest city in the State of New York and the Republic of New England as a whole.

GUANTANAMO BAY – Following the recent acquisition of Guantanamo Bay, the government went to work establishing and consolidating its control and jurisdiction of the bay. Firstly, a naval base was to be established in the new territory (named the New England Naval Base Guantanamo Bay), where it would be administered by the government and garrisoned by a division of the newly-established Joint Task Force Guantanamo.

Gitmo_Aerial.jpg

Guantanamo Bay

As for the territory itself, it shall be administered as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of the Republic of New England. Through this, economic laws and policies taking effect in the mainland don’t (or have more liberal effects) take prevalence in the new territory. This means major factories, industries, and businesses are allowed to operate with minimal government participation and supervision. It is supposedly one of the government’s initiatives to attract foreign investment into the region that would help bring in profits from tourism, to help encourage the growing tourist sector of the economy.

Guantanamo_Bay_map.png

Location of Guantanamo Bay

On the political side, Guantanamo Bay shall be governed as a dependent territory, directly controlled by the government through the administration of a Territorial Governor. Inhabitants in the territory shall be accorded New England citizenship, although they shall have fewer rights than in the homeland. However, they will be exempt from military conscription and others, and will have the right of free transit between Guantanamo Bay and the Republic of New England; they also have the right to travel freely into Tahoan Cuba as the territory has no restrictions on travel and has no plans to do so.

PROVIDENCE – Following the establishment of the Republic of New England, the government has been at work establishing new military bases all over the country – but at the same time, they discovered old abandoned ones, one that would easily be ‘reactivated’ for national use. Thus, the government has issued orders today, mandating the takeover of Fort Farnum, a former J Andres military base located near Providence, Rhode Island. Soon, Army soldiers marched upon the abandoned base and simply occupied it. In the process, they discovered various J Andres military documents and promptly shipped them off to Boston.

800px-Richards_Building.jpg

Fort Farnum

The takeover of Fort Farnum is only the beginning of the government’s nationwide initiative to assert control over the Republic of New England, as well to recycle old assets for national use. Following Fort Farnum, the following military bases were taken over, in order of the States they were found in:

Military Bases:

  • Pratt Military Base, Massachusetts
  • Whitetail Military Base, Massachusetts
  • Mason Military Base, Massachusetts
  • Merrow Military Base, Rhode Island
  • Swan Military Base, Connecticut
  • Brunel Military Base, New Hampshire
  • Saint Mary Military Base, Vermont
  • Cabral Military Base, New York
  • Hurley Military Base, New York
  • Isla Military Base, New York

Naval Bases:

  • Porto Ackbar, Massachusetts
  • Block Island Naval Institute, Rhode Island

Air Force Bases:

  • Woodrow Kissinger Air Force Base, Massachusetts
  • Oscar York Air Force Base, New Hampshire

Forts:

  • Fort Ahmadinejad, New York
  • Fort Rossingol, Vermont

These aforementioned bases will be ‘reactivated’ as bases for the New England Armed Forces (NEAF), which has now begun moving into them. Moreover, military observers have reported a series of discoveries at the shores of Lake Ontario. More to be updated soon.

OOC: I found J Andres's wiki today. :P

FITZGERALD – Days after the incorporation of Maine into the Republic of New England, the new state government under the newly-appointed Governor, Angus King, passed a resolution renaming the state capital of Portland to Fitzgerald in honor of President John F. Kennedy.

AngusKing.jpg

Angus King, Governor of Maine

In a televised speech to the State of Maine and the Republic of New England as a whole, King stated that this recent course of action is to give a “statement of eternal gratitude to our President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, for taking the initiative to eradicate anarchy, lawlessness, and poverty in Maine.” Thus, King said, it was deemed as appropriate to do such a thing.

President Kennedy himself was honored by this, saying that it was an ‘utmost honor’. “What did I do to deserve such a honor? I only sent in troops, that's all.” Kennedy joked to his wife, Jackie. Fitzgerald is Kennedy’s middle name, and the city sports that in honor.

800px-PWM2a.JPG

With that, the Portland Naval Base in the city was renamed to the Naval Base Fitzgerald, as to symbolize the name change. Maine, interestingly, is the only state in the Republic of New England with a predominantly French-speaking population, and the only one to have French as a speaking language, although not on the administrative level.

NEW YORK CITY – The government unveiled an ambitious set of plans to the nation today, through the National Exhibit Regarding Planning and Development for the Future in New York City.

The plan is to ‘pedestrianize’ a large part of Broadway, in Manhattan, as a way to improve traffic flow, enhance public safety, and to provide for more and better public space in regards to pedestrians. According to Jonathan Khan, the NYC Transportation Commissioner who unveiled the plan on behalf of the government, the current system “creates problems by creating bottlenecks that contribute to congestion and public hazards. In regards to that, we are seeking for ways to assess the problem and I believe this is the way to attaining that.”

CarFreeBway-TSQ_1.jpg

Before and after: a digital rendering of Broadway, at 7th Ave.

Aside from creating vast swaths of pedestrian space, the ambitious plan also aims to reduce vehicle travel time by 18 percent on 7th Avenue and by 40 percent on 6th Avenue. To oversee construction effort, and to ensure that the plan goes accordingly, the government will monitor various criteria pertaining to economic data, along with others. According to unconfirmed sources, the plan – in addition to creating a more “safer and secure environment” – seeks to provide an economic impetus that would further the nation’s economy and encourage the progress toward a Communist society by encouraging people to go out on the streets and interact with others some more.

CarFreeBway_HSQ.jpg

Before and after: Broadway at 6th Ave.

Construction will begin at the end of April and will continue through August, and will be coordinated with various other efforts ongoing at the time. Further construction efforts are envisaged to begin in the spring of 2010, although much beyond that remains classified. The costs of the project, according to the government, are envisaged to go well into the “billions of dollars”. Whether the plan is going to be expanded into the rest of New England, the government has declined to comment on that.

UTICA – The government has commissioned the formation of a “Superfund” program to help combat industrial contamination in the Republic of New England. President John F. Kennedy, when he signed the decree authorizing such, stated that “through this program, we are getting these harmful pollutants and dangerous chemicals out and putting jobs and investment back in.”

After surveying hundreds of chemical plants and factories specializing in chemicals in various parts of the country – but most especially the New Yorker city of Utica – the government came to the conclusion that a campaign to eradicate pollution should thus be enacted. To finance the program, the government will impose a new tax – a “Superfund tax” – which will be imposed upon any factory or industry that were found to be ‘polluting the environment, or otherwise contributing to it.’ To jumpstart the program, approximately $300 million will be invested to these regions all over New England, of which the government will monitor the proceedings to ensure the money are utilized for what they were meant for: to purge chemicals from soil and water, and to restore the land to productive use.

The program is expected to take at least five to ten years, and is projected to cost up to at least $5 billion dollars. The process will be overseen by the Department of National Development through the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA).

BOSTON – President Kennedy implemented a series of reforms in the government of the Republic of New England (although ‘renaming’ would be more accurate). Through the Government Reforms Decree, the word ‘Ministry’ (such as the Ministry of Defense) was replaced with ‘Department’. Similarly, Ministers became Secretaries. The list of new names is as below:

  • Secretary of State (SecSta)
  • Secretary of the Treasury (SecTre)
  • Secretary of Defense (SecDef)
  • Secretary of Justice (SecJus)
  • Secretary of the Interior (SecInt)
  • Secretary of Agriculture (SecAgr)
  • Secretary of Commerce (SecCom)
  • Secretary of Labor (SecLab)
  • Secretary of National Development (SecNat)
  • Secretary of Transportation (SecTra)
  • Secretary of Energy (SecEne)
  • Secretary of Education (SecEdu)
  • Secretary of State Security (SecSec)

On a similar note, the Ministry of National Security was renamed the Department of State Security (DSS), and with its major components renamed:

  • Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) to Bureau of State Investigation (BSI)
  • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to State Intelligence Agency (SIA)
  • Bureau of National Security (BNS) to State Security Bureau (SSB)

ROCHESTER – Following the recent agreement between the Republic of New England and the Atlantian Federation, the region of western New York State was taken over as the 7th, 8th, and 9th Divisions of the New England Army occupied the area. The government has prepared plans regarding the newest region – although it’s political status remains in question: will it be incorporated into the rest of New York State, or will it be given autonomous status?

Work at the now-former border, near Syracuse, was suspended as workers were now mobilized to the new border. In addition, inhabitants in the newest region of New England were accorded citizenship as New England laws and decrees formally took effect over Atlantian ones.
