Which is better - 1 Happiness or $2?

Is it better to have +1 Happiness or +$2 of income (before modifiers)? I know it's very close, but there is a subtle difference, and I can't remember if 1 happiness is slightly more or less than $2.

I used to know all these things off the top of my head, but it's been a long time since I've really bothered to do any of the math of this game on my own (not as much to do once you have all the improvements and wonders and a stable trade set!).

Before modifiers, 1 happiness = $2 income. With the best improvements, I believe that jumps to 1 = $4.15

... its 2 dollars. By a small margin. With or without modifiers.

They are almost the same before and after modifiers. The happiness, however, decreases a bit with the environment and that makes the $2 better.

is there any place to read up on the effect of happiness on your nation? because the CN "guide" is purposely vague on that subject
