"Your Excellency, Dr. Vignesh Sarabhai, Director of Cochin Space Research Organization is waiting in the antechamber," the Chaver soldier informed.

"Yes, tell him to come in," the King said and went on reading a file.

Dr. Sarabhai was escorted to the King's office and the Chaver Guard withdrew.

"Good evening Dr. Sarabhai, I hope you had a pleasant journey to the capital?"

"Long but comfortable, Your Excellency."

"Excellent. Dr. Sarabhai, what is the progress on the Project ANTRIX?"

"Sir, the work is going on well. Some of the most difficult conceptual problems have been sorted out. Now some remaining technical difficulties need to be solved."

"When can Antrix be launched?"

"In one year. In one year we can launch Antrix."

"Are you confident?"

"Yes of course, Sir. As I said earlier the greatest challenge has been sorted out, namely the vehicle itself. The range and operations specified were quite tricky for us. Now we have to get ready the support systems. For that we predict another three months, then three months for extensive testing and three more months for integration. Since this is a prototype we are doing everything from scratch. Once the systems are validated we can cycle operations quite faster."

"Excellent news, Dr. Sarabhai," then seeing a doubt pass over the scientist's face the King asked, " Is anything worrying you, Vignesh?"

"Sir, I have always been puzzled by the requirements specified for Antrix. It is simply not necessary, it is overkill. Then I heard that it was you who suggested the extended parameters for the concept team. Sir, may I ask why?"

The King thought for a second, and spoke,

"Dr. Sarabhai, our objective is not merely space, but beyond. I think it is time for me to introduce an idea to you. Can you think of anything for which the extended range capabilities of Antrix could be aptly used?"

The scientist was puzzled. He thought deeply for a minute and then he exclaimed," Sir, surely you are not thinking about that?"

"Precisely that. I must reveal to you that I have not talked about this idea to anybody and I hope you will keep this idea as secretive as that."

"But of course, Sir, you have my word on it. But this is phenomenal!"

"Yes and all the more reason why we should be circumspect about it. We shall announce this plan only after the success of Project Antrix. Not until then. Meanwhile I want you to set up a small team for studying this project. Perhaps you all might come with a suitable name for it? Or better yet we wait for naming it until the success of Antrix."

"Yes Your Excellency," the scientist said with a joyous smile lighting up his face. After all it is not always one is given a chance to attain his greatest childhood fantasy!

"God Speed, Dr. Sarabhai. I and our Kingdom count on you."

The Royal Parade Ground is decked for a parade of stunning brilliance. The display is however not on the ground but aloft.

The King, the senior Cabinet Ministers and the service chiefs of Royal Cochin Defense Forces have assembled in the open dais, all wearing sun glasses and some with binoculars. It is a warm and sunny morning and the grounds are filled with hundreds of Kochiites who have come here to see a rare sight.

The Chief of Naval Operations, Vice Adm. KP Marakkar looked to the East and said, "Here they come," for indeed his was a mariner's eye able to see far and beyond what other landlubbers could see.

And come they did, an aerial phalanx of fighter bombers, the Jadayu Mk.II. The 20 new regiments of Royal Cochin Air Force had come in force in formation on a east to west bearing. The 20 regiments with a total of 1000 fighter bombers were the latest weapon in Cochin's arsenal. Never before had the people of Cochin City had seen such a massive performance. As the fighter bombers passed over the Parade Grounds several canisters were opened and a shower of flowers rained upon the ground. The 20 regiments split and reformed in a variety of aerial maneuvres which left the people stunned. The flight capabilities of this indigenous fighter bomber was quite manifest.

As a climax to this event a flight of 6 Jadayus streaked in towards the Flag Pole of Parade grounds from 6 different angles in the sky. They barreled down from an altitude of 30000ft seemingly on a crash course to strike simultaneously at the flag pole. At a bare 1000 ft above the Flag Pole the six planes split their directions and lifted off in High G turns. The shock wave reverberated among the masses and they cheered loudly their brave warriors in the sky.

COMPOSITE MATERIALS RESEARCH CENTER

NARYN

"Temperature?"

"1500"

"Structural stability?"

"Solid"

"Increase to 1600," the Project Director told the technicians manning the furnaces.

The technician increased the current suitably.

"Structural stability?"

"Solid."

Now it was time for the big leap.

"Increase temperature to 1700."

The Director watched the temperature on the dial snaking upwards as it passed the crtical temperature of 1638 degrees celcius until it finally reached 1700 degrees.

"Stability?"

"Still solid sir. How far you want to go, Sir?"

"All the way. Increase temperature to 1800."

Slowly now temperature began increasing again till it reached the required limit.

"Structural stability."

"Stable and solid. We thought it would deteriorate by now."

"Okay let us find out precisely when. Increase to 2000."

The whole team watched as the electric arc furnace heated up till its maximum rated temperature of 2000 degrees Celcius.

"Sir, we have cracks forming now. Structural stability lost."

"Temperature?"

"1957 degrees Celcius."

"Okay, shut furnace 1 down. Furnace 2 increase temperature to 1950."

As the Furnace 1 cooled down attention switched to Furnace 2 where temperature increased rapidly to the required number.

"Stability."

"Solid."

"Okay. Rapid cooling procedure initiate."

As the technician pressed a lever on the furnace the ceramic tile slid down a chute passed a temperature lock and fell into a large tank of water placed at -20 degrees Celcius.

"Structural stability?"the Director asked with slight tremor to his voice.

"Solid, Sir. Structure is solid."

"Well gentlemen, we have a success here. Though we may have to repeat tests for many more times I think we have it here."

The Project Director of this part of Project Antrix then called up the head of CSRO to give him the good news.

SPACE LAUNCH CENTER

KARAGANDY

Yet another part of Project Antrix is being tested at this remote facility in western Karagandy.

The massive boosters of SLV-1 roared into power turning tonnes of liquid propellant into a tower of fumes on which the rocket surged into space. As the Telemetry team monitored the instruments denoting another ordinary and successful launch the Capsule team were on the verge of heart ache in anticipation. Success would mean validation of a thousand man hours of painstaking work. As the first, second and finally the third stage of the rocket separated the project members anxiously monitored the instruments for any trouble. So far so good.

Finally the 20 mts X 4 mts conical capsule separated from the spent rocket motors and was hurled into the outer space, an environment inhospitable to every life form.

Sensors and instruments inside the capsules monitored the life statuses of the chimpanzee, 2 gold fish, mosquitoes and cockroaches in their enclosures. Yet other instruments monitored some plants kept inside the capsule. The systems inside the capsule were fully automated for the purpose of life support to its inhabitants. The chimpanzee merited special attention with a specially designed cage which would prevent it from damaging any equipment.

The capsule will orbit the earth for a period of one month after which the capsule will undergo a programmed re entry into the earth's atmosphere to achieve a landing in Indian Ocean.

The characteristics and parameters derived from the study of these organisms in space would be vital for the success of the Project Antrix.

Meanwhile back at Karagandy the members of this particular project monitored the instruments with many praying silently for the lives in that capsule.

The gale force winds were whipping the seas to a storm as the Amindvi class destroyer DS13 cut through. The destroyer normally part of the Cruiser Task Force 7, currently docked at RCNB Gosree was detached for temporary duty. They were currently in the stormier sections of the Bay of Bengal for a patrol.

The 2 TN3 thorium power plants were surging out power to conquer the waves and the scimitar like bow of the ship lanced through the waves. All over the ship duty sections on deck were strapped on to the ship with safety lines and within many green sailors were turning even more green as they regretted their choice of dinner earlier in the day. Some were visibly examining the results of their own digestive system on food they ate as lately as an hour ago.

Meanwhile in the bridge the Commodore commanding the destroyer was leaning back in his chair watching his new Executive Officer taking helm. The Commander ranked XO was mouthing stern directions to the bridge and engineering crew as he sailed his ship around the massive swells in this part of the sea particularly prone to cyclones.

Sipping a mug of thick black coffee the Commodore watched the young officer doing his duties. For a young man of 26 he was a shade young to be a Commander but his O rank was clearly won the hard way albeit in a different service. This was the way the Commodore liked to teach his wards- throw them to the sea and watch them swim back.

The lad was doing pretty well too! The coffee had yet to stain the pearly whites of the Commodore's uniform.

At that time a seaman from the Communications Section came by bearing a message.

The Captain of the Ship read the message and called his XO," Vikram... Vikram... Seems like you have still more traveling to do. Morning you are to leave for Visakhapatnam from where you shall leave for Haruhigrad."

"So soon? What gives?" the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Cochin asked.

"It seems Haruhiist Empire has a new Crown Princess. His Highess wants you to go as the special envoy."

The capsule had been in orbit for a full month now and is being brought back to earth. The entire reentry sequence is automated and being controlled by the Project Antrix Telemetry team. Small thrust rockets fired so that the capsule would be in a proper alignment for the reentry.

As the cone shaped capsule reentered the atmosphere its bottom surface started getting heated up. The bottom surface of the capsule is made of composite ceramic materials which thermally insulated the capsule. For good measure the entire capsule's surface was lined with the ceramic tiles. Meanwhile within the capsule the inhabitants were quite comfortable given the conditions. Sensors arrayed throughout the capsule transmitted parameters which were sharply monitored by the biosphere team.

In due time the capsule started falling down in earnest on to the earth.

Meanwhile the HAWK radar on Station Gangothri in Antarctica was monitoring the progress of the capsule. A Halob strategic AWACS was also orbiting south of Andonia to track the rapidly falling capsule.

At 80000 ft the first speed breaker parachute was deployed. At 50000 ft it disengaged and the second one and finally the last parachute was deployed at 20000 ft. From now the capsule would be at the merit of the winds. As the altimeter on the capsule read 1000 ft Vectran balloons in the capsule got automatically inflated by containers of pressurized Nitrogen and the capsule splashed on to the Indian Ocean. The Cruiser Task Force 11 which was holding station in the region for this explicit purpose launched a MH53 for the retrieval. The helicopter was given guidance by the Halob and finally the capsule was slung underneath the MH53.

Neither the helicopter nor the cruiser were authorized to open the capsule. It could be done only at Gangothri. The MH53 which was from the squadron based at Gangotrhi hence set out South. A Metac had lifted off by then from Air Force Base Gangothri to provide both AWACS and aerial refueling cover to the MH53.

Finally making landfall over the Base Camp the MH53 headed further south. At Station Bravo the MH53 hovered over a Tatra trailer truck on which it landed the capsule and returned to AFB Gangothri. The truck made its way inside one of the hangar like buildings that were constructed at Station Bravo. Through an air/temperature/pressure lock the truck made its way inside the laboratory area maintained at NTP.

Biosphere scientists immediately wrenched open the capsule to check on the inhabitants. They were gratified and happy. All inhabitants were all right.

Peace.

Peace.

Absolute peace and absolute bliss.

At this time he was happily content and separated from every tie of duty.

He was alone now, cherishing this moment of solitary bliss.

No entourages, no guards, in fact if he could trust the radar no human being for miles around him.

It is just the blue sky above and hard earth far below. Just as it should be and it is for every human being in the world.

"After all finally that is all there is to live in this world- Sky above and earth below. "

More than the transquility of the setting was the sheer thrill of the thing itself. After all roaring at Mach + speed does have its own thrill.

The Jadayu Mk.II flown by the King of Cochin was followed discretely at a range of 60 km by a flight group of 4 JM2s. They had orders not to come within the horizon of the King. It was hard on the King's Guards but occassionally they had to bow down to their King's foibles.

The JM2 blazed across the Tibetan sky. The King is flying from Cochin to Lhasa to meet the Dalai Lama.

"If only the whole world could be as peaceful. Why is it that some nations always need to be aggressive? Do they think that it will garner them respect?"

"It is almost as if insulting is the new statecraft."

"Ah! Why am I thinking about those uncouth philistines. After all I am going to meet more worthy and respectable people. Moreover I doubt many other world leaders could do things like this!"

The King thought as he dove the aircraft on a sharp dive as he saw a particular valley that invited some aerobatics. The 2 engine stealth aircraft danced to his ministrations. Operators and King's Guards men aboard a Halob AWACS some kilometers watched with held breath at these acts.

CSRO Press Release

Cochin Space Research Organization is launching a Solar Power Satellite system called TESLA. This system has been in development for many years now and it would provide an additional source of energy to the Kingdom. The TESLA system will initially be a network of 16 SPS satellites, each of 4GW rating. It would soon be joined by a secondary network of 40 6GW satellites. The satellites shall be launched to the Geostationary Orbits above the Kingdom of Cochin, Station Gangothri and the Baloch and Bosaso Provinces. The SLV3 and YAMA1 are stated to be the main launching platforms for these systems.

To downlink the power generated by TESLA systems 2 rectenna fields have been set up in central Xinjiang and Karagandy. They have been built over existing agricultural fields in such a way that there would be very little effect on ground activities.

The first Tesla satellite would be launched today evening by a SLV3 rocket.

Thank You.

Col. Vishwanath is very uneasy as he is waiting in the corridor. Uneasiness is a quite strange effect for this man. He is always so sure of his actions with a supreme confidence in his abilities.

Col. Vishwananth wanted to fly ever since he saw the first fighter plane during an air show. The ambition drove him to excel in school and to gain selection into the National Defense Academy. As a graduating officer he got the choice of service - Royal Cochin Air Force.

At the Air Force Academy again he came within the top 5% and qualified for fighter training. His flying career started in the Marut Jet trainers followed by service in a Mig29 regiment. He was a natural aviator with an impeccable situational awareness, eagle eye vision and quick reflexes. After 3 years in Mig29s he was assigned to the RF08 JM1 regiment. His excellent service records and flying skills soon made him a Squad Leader in the regiment.

After that followed a spell of non combat assignments. He volunteered to be a test pilot for the JM2 program. Only the brightest, smartest and craziest of aviators volunteer to be a test pilot. While testing the thrills and joys of a prototype Vishwanath thoroughly enjoyed himself. Once during a flight test Vishwanathan's JM2 developed an engine failure and he had to eject. He parachuted down to a rocky field and his leg was fractured. The injury kept him out from active flying for 3 months.

But Vishwanathan took the convalescing time to certify himself on other aircraft types in RCAF. He took the time to certify for the biggest plane itself, the Halob. The quick learner that he was cleared all theoretical papers and laboratory works for Halob certification and once he regained his flight status he qualified for Halob flight. So when Maj. Vishwanath rejoined full service with RCAF he was a qualified pilot in Halob and JM1.

After another short stint in the RF08 regiment Lt. Col. Vishwanath was selected for staffing the newly formed Jadayu Mk. II regiments. He was assigned to the RF37 regiment as a Squad Leader. A year of service found him promoted to the rank of Colonel and the job of a Squadron Leader in RF37.

Now he was in the running for the job of a Regimental Commander with the rank of a Brigadier General. This was the tricky phase in any service officer's career. Far too many good men for far too less good jobs.

And now he was being called before Air Vice Marshal Praveen Kumar, the Commander of Royal Cochin Air Force.

After a seemingly long wait in the corridor he was summoned to the office of the CFO.

"Good morning Col. Vishwanath. I have heard a lot of good things about you." AVM Praveen Kumar said. Behind him a JM1 was lifting off from the Executive Air Field in Cochin City.

"Thank You, Sir." Col. Vishwanath said apprehensively. The AVM was reading through his personnel jacket, something that always brings out jitters in a military personnel.

"I see that you are qualified in Mig29, Jadayu Mk.I, Jadayu Mk.II and also Halob? You have also been a test pilot, right?"

"Yes Sir."

"Why Halob, Vishwanath? You are a career fighter pilot. Why try out on a transport aircraft, a trash hauler?"

"Sir, while I was grounded after my accident I wanted to try out something different. Halob was simply the most different aircraft I have seen from Jadayus. Also they are the biggest planes in RCAF."

"I see. Interesting. You must be wondering why you have been called before me, right?"

"Yes, Sir." Now Vishwanath was truly perplexed.

"The Kingdom has a new and secretive project. It is purely voluntary. You have been found to be the most qualified for this mission. This project would entail great personal risk. We cannot even assure your survival in this Project. Hell, we cannot even guarantee that your remains would be interred if things go awry. However the scope of this Project would ensure that your name would remain immortal in the annals of history, come success or failure. " Praveen Kumar said.

The Colonel sat tight waiting to hear more.

"Colonel, what I am going to tell you does not leave this room, whether you choose to accept the duty or not. Is that understood?"

"Yes Sir."

"Good. The Kingdom is developing a manned Space Shuttle program for manned exploration of space. The spacecraft has been validated. Now we need the crew for it. You are the best aviator in Royal Cochin Air Force. I know it, and I think you know it too. We want you to be the pilot of this space craft."

Vishwanath could not believe his ears. Was his greatest dream going to come true? To Space? He had reached the fringes of near space on rare sojourns to outer atmosphere while testing the limits of his aircraft. But a travel into outer space?

"Sir, where do I sign up?"

"I see you are already enthusiastic about this. However I must warn you you shall be subjected to a great many rigorous tests and would be living in a totally different lifestyle from now on. You also may not be allowed to do ANY sort of flying for quite some time. And as I said there is no guarantee for your life."

"Sir, I am ready for it. Where do I sign up?"
