"Greetings and salutations across the globe, I'm Amin Abdullah and I'll be right here in beautiful Carthage with you for this first World Cup in decades. Today we will bring you the live selection where the 16 qualifying teams will each be divided into groups"

The screen turns to a large event hosted in central Carthage showing several officials from various nationalities and a large ball with has various smaller balls in it to guarantee a truly random selection.

"In group A we have of course the host the Carthage as well as Iceland, Baffin Island and Druk Yul. With nations from four different continents this group truly does reflect the ideals of a global united event"

As Amin comments on the group the camera turns back to reveal the drawing of the next four balls and thus the nations.

"In group B we have Rio de Janeiro, Novak, Prussia and Milan. All in all, knowing the individual strengths and weaknesses of the teams this is a pretty even group and certainly one worth keeping an eye on"

Just as he finished the next four balls were already ready.

"In group C we have Sparta, Japan, the Atlantic Federation and Northlands. Knowing Sparta and Northlands I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of Japan or the Federation. I might even call it the group of death but with only four countries left I know group D will deserve that honour with Tikal, Alvonia, French Guiana and Cascadia. Those last two are in for a tough ride."

Carthage - The streets and hotels of Carthage are getting filled with people as the World Cup is set to start later today with its two opening games.

Early reports indicate that hundreds of thousands have filled the capacity of the capital and the seven other cities where games are held to the max. Meanwhile in the Kingdom itself the World Cup is proving to be a tool uniting all factions of the country as they are all cheering for their boys.

Meanwhile the Tanits Warriors, as the nickname of the team has come to be, look forward to some fun games and will do their best for their country. In the words of team captain Malak Sultan "Let's play some football".

Playing at home the Tanits Warriors will be facing Druk Yul in just a few hours.

Druk Yul's fans had traveled half-way around the world to watch their team. Soccer wasn't one of the most widespread sports back home, but they were giving it a chance. They waved their grey and red flags merrily as they filled their side of the stadium for the match. They didn't expect victory, but they were here for the joy of the sport, not merely to win and their team would give their best regardless of their ranking. The Druk Yul were known for a very aggressive play style. They hoped to pressure the Carthaginian team into making mistakes.

Honorable as always, they would give a traditional salute to their rivals as the team would take the field. Their fans, were known to be relaxed, laid back.. preferring to enjoy the moment in orderly silence.. until there was a goal, then they would go absolutely bonkers. Druk Yul's teams and fans were very courteous and grateful to their hosts. They even took their own trash out of the stadiums when they left, leaving little for the custodians to worry about.

Day 1

Kingdom of Carthage 2 - 0 Druk Yul

"Hello again, as you all know I am Amin Abdullah and we have a great game for you tonight. Carthage against Druk Yul, the first opening game in a very long time. Today we have two teams with very different approaches to the game. While Carthage prefers a balanced and cooperative play Druk Yul is known for an aggressive play style. In just a few minutes we will see who ends up superior in the game."

First Half:

As expected Druk Yul forces an aggressive play early on pushing Carthage into a defensive position. Druk Yul clearly dominates the first thirty minutes as Carthage stays on its own part of the field primarily keeping Druk Yul away from the goal. As the end of the first half approaches and the cheering of the fans grows louder Sultan makes a move for the goal and in the 41st minute scores the first goal for the home team.  The remaining few minutes are uneventful as Druk Yul tries but proves unable to correct the score.

Second Half:

The second half starts off with a significantly more aggressive Carthage, with the 1-0 as a cover the Tanits Warriors repeatedly make a move for the Druk Yul goal however the latter's defence proves strong enough to hold back the other team. As the 70th minute approaches Druk Yul manages to use a hole in the Carthaginian defence and makes  a shot which is only barely blocked by the Carthaginian goalkeeper. As end time comes clooser and Druk Yul faces a 1-0 loss a tackle in the 85th minute is declared a foul and a penalty awarded to Carthage. In a decisive kick Malak Sultan pushes Carthage to the 2-0. The final seven minutes prove to be again uneventful as the Carthaginian defence holds back the final tries of Druk Yul to even the score.

Analysis:

While Carthage had always been the favourite for this game Druk Yul proved effective in keeping the former on their toes and making impressive use of holes in the Carthaginian defence. The game also shows relatively weak play on the side of Carthage as several opportunities in both halves are left unused. Carthage definitively has room for improvement and Druk Yul may very well have significant potential in the games against Iceland and Baffin Island and may very well advance to the quarter finals.

Baffin Island 1 - 1 Iceland

"Greetings from sunny and very warm Algiers, I am Hassan Amjad and today we will be looking at the second game in Group A. Baffin Island against Iceland. Despite their low spot on the world rankings many predict it may be a more interesting game than you would at first expect. It seems clear that both teams and fans are not quite used to the heat but I am sure they will manage."

First Half:

While early on in the first half Iceland displayed aggressive play it quickly reverted to a more defensive style as both sides proved unable to truly make a push for the other. After an Icelandic foul in the 40th minute Baffin Island is granted a penalty however tension proves too much as the ball fails to come even close to the target. The first half ends with a 0-0 and disappointed fans on both sides.

Second Half:

The second half starts a lot better as both sides show significantly improved, but riskier, play. Only 3 minutes in Iceland manages to push it to a 0-1 in the 48th minute. Continuously keeping Baffin Island on their toes for the next 40 minutes it is only in the 88th minute that Baffin Island evens the score by taking advantage of a hole in the Icelandic defence making it 1-1. Despite attempts on both sides the game ends in a draw.

Analysis:

Being the lowest on the world rankings no one was expecting Baffin Island to play so well, Iceland however proved up to the match as they too showed good play and perhaps more importantly. Good sportsmanship. The final result makes the remaining games in the group very important for both sides as both stand an equal chance of making it to the quarter finals at this point.

Icelandic Media Corporation:  Post-game Interview with Icelandic Captian Aron Einar Gunnarsson

After almost tasting victory in their first match, but conceding a draw in the 88th minute, Icelandic midfielder and captain Aron Gunnarsson displayed mixed emotions in his postgame interview:

Aron+Einar+Gunnarsson+Iceland+v+Croatia+

"We felt like we really came out and played well, played aggressive, after halftime.  We got that early goal there, we kept pressing, I think there are a lot of positives to take from it.  We aren't considered an elite team or anything like that, but we are going to look to change the perception.  I think anybody who saw us play, I hope that they recognize we can be a dangerous team.  That said, we need to tighten up a few things.  There is always room for improvement, and we've got to make some adjustments.

Going forward, we will take the point and look to play even better.  We want to advance of course, and we refuse to not give it our all.  No matter what happens, we are going to do our best to out work our opponents, and I refuse to let Iceland down.  Whatever happens on the pitch and in the standings, I want to make Iceland proud, and they will never be able to look at this team and say we didn't give it our absolute best shot."

How exactly did Bear Islands' Nation of the Bear not make qualifying games again?

We submitted our application to FIFA within demanded timeframe.

Not like anybody closed the sign-ups for the World Cup early.

"Upon re-examination of our administration the staff of the Federation of International Football Associations has found no application for membership from any football association within the Bear Islands' Nation of the Bear. There is no deadline for application to FIFA. You are free to do so at this point in time and sign up for the second World Cup once registration opens."

Xavian Herbert Wolff, Secretary General of the Federation of International Football Associations

Druk Yul 's team petitions the Secretary General of FIFA to be permitted to play an exhibition game with Procincta as part of the World Cup matches to permit for the inclusion of them in the festivities. They are willing to take part at any gap in the schedule or immediately after the Cup as time permits. Druk Yul's team manager also mentions that if FIFA wants to and Druk Yul does succeed in the Quarterfinals, they are willing to do a play-off against Procincta as a final hurdle to their quarter-final position as a courtesy to the late arriving team and as an act of good will and sportsmanship. If they lose to Procincta, the Procintans would take their place in the final matches.
