Neither game has SO3's strong/weak hit system or the defense system, it just uses the X button with a chained 3 attack thing and you have short range and long range special attacks (which are standard fare in SO). So yea, they're pretty much just the best versions of the games available. If you can get around Ratix's horrible English name (Roddick lol) it's all good.

As a result of that, with all the extra talents (particularly group talents) it's a bit easier than SO1, but the addition of other characters in SO1 makes it better overall as well. It's worth a buy. SO2 is gameplay wise essentially the same, if you've played SO you know the basic kind of combat to expect. There isn't that retarded system that SO3 has, where MP loss kills you. T...

Well, it's great to have SO1 with animated cutscenes (however infrequent they are) and with voice. The anime-style character portraits also add a lot of feel to it that I think just looks stupid in the 3D games (IE: SO3 and 4). The style looks good in 2D, in 3D it just looks...bad. Like the stereotypical bad JRPG. The game plays exactly like SO2, as it's built on that game's engine.

Oh, I haven't played the original Pirates. Only the remake. I have indeed played the original Star Ocean, and own both the remake of 1 and port of 2 for the PSP. Good games.
