An announcement from the office of the High Minister

Brian Ellis stepped up to the speaker’s podium in the council hall. He was decidedly nervous, as he would not only be addressing the nation, but the entire world. The 32 year old would have to prove his mettle, in this baptism of fire.

Friends, countrymen, and all the people of the world. I stand before you today to accept the burden of leadership of my fine country, and yet, even as I take office, the world is in tatters. While I am of the firm belief that New Cymru is in good standing, it saddens me that the rest of the world is not.

Europe is recovering from a devastating nuclear war, Asia is embroiled in yet another conflict, and even our close neighbours are recovering from a cowardly and unprovoked attack, by adversaries who did not have the guile to come forward and take credit for their strike.

While it is a policy of this administration to focus on internal affairs above all else, how can I, in good conscience, do nothing while the world self-destructs? I cannot. Therefore I am authorizing a heightened state of alert for all military units. Furthermore, and although it pains me to say it, I am authorising a national draft of all able bodied citizens, not undertaking a critical civic service or undergoing higher education. With any luck, this is where it will end, however, in the unfortunate event that we must become further involved in the conflict, I wish every man and woman on the battlefield, on either side, to know that my prayers are with you.

Ellis stepped down from the podium, and was escorted out of the room by a military entourage. As the doors swung shut behind him, the room dissolved into chaos.
