Alliances protect you and help you, and offer a friendly community in exchange for your being active on their forums and military. You can't get something for nothing. Add the AA, switch to green, trade with other LPEs if you can and vote for Jwetzel for senate. That's pretty much it. You'll get messages every now and then if you need to do anything else.
