Vacation at the beach, crab stew and many other foodstuffs
So I spent the last half of last week in a house down by the beach. Great, right? Well, sort of.
Altogether, there were eighteen people sharing the one house. Four of them were less than a year old. Another four (five really, but one's a bit older) were young children.
Don't get me wrong, I love kids. I used to be able to play with my siblings and the kids I babysat for hours on end. But, now isn't then. And within two days, between kids, hayfever (we were right near a national park) and lack of sleep, I was out of it.
Now, the bright side of this trip was that I had a lot of time to cook, and a lot of hungry people to cook for. A fair portion of them were vegetarians, but most made an exception for seafood. So before we left I made the much-anticipated crab stew/soup to take there, and let me say, it was delicious. I went wild on seasoning - I used a few herbs that I'd never even heard of before, and a really nice mixed pepper. The result was a flavorful broth with crab meat and vegetable pieces all through. One that I would cook again without hesitation.
Later in the week the non-vegetarians all made a stuffed chicken together. Every time I make stuffed chicken, it reminds me of a piece from a kids' book where someone stuffs a chicken wth cushion stuffing and serves it to some guests... needless to say, they weren't happy. Ours came out just fine though and I was quite pleased, I haven't made one in a while. I definitely enjoyed eating it!
I also made my potato and leek soup for the vegetarians and even sampled some myself. It was eaten within 2 days.
When we got back I made an industrial quantity of my infamous pea soup, which should last us a week or so. By that time, everyone will probably be fed up with it and I'll have to make something else... lamb roast? A barbecue? Maybe I should try my hand at a curry again.
