Whats on my mind 6/14/2010 3am

Some might say I have a sleeping problem, but I don’t really consider it a problem as it does not affect my life. I get to sleep around 8 or 9 just when it starts getting hot out, and then I’m up by 1 or 2pm when it starts cooling off. I don’t currently have a job or school so this does not affect either. I would have posted something this weekend, but I got enjoy a wonderful two days with the love of my life. I’ll admit I was disappointed in the IMAX Theater I went too, for $30 tickets it was not worth it. However being forced to watch Letters to Juliet, was not the horrible experience I thought it might be, not something I’d buy, but it was a pretty good movie. Iron Man 2 on the other hand is an amazing movie far better than the first, sadly the IMAX wasn’t as good as I had remembered and as such it diminished my enjoyment of the film, though it was a very good movie.

Regardless it’s 3am and I find myself with something on my mind. As with my last entry this is simply a personal thought about something relevant to the game and is in no way meant toward any group, person, or alliance.

I notice that while there are a hundred different ways to play this game, most people tend to stick with what is considered normal. A player creates their nation; they are recruited to join an alliance. They work to establish themselves in an alliance, empower their nation to grow, and make friends along the way. There isn’t anything wrong with this, but I question is it the only way? I don’t know enough to assume that nobody has ever or is currently playing by a different style. I know many alliances conduct themselves differently, but that does not equate to difference of style, just different method.

I have seen the Cyber nations RP section and I began to wonder what this game would look like if the norm was shifted so that the focus was not on the alliance, but the nations themselves. Setting here thinking about it, I don’t think much would change, nations would still join together for defense, you would still need a government to run the large organization, and I think in the end it would work out in the same manner, with no disrespect to international countries, I’ll call this the American Method. The reasoning behind that being that instead of the Original states just being independent countries they decided to join into the alliance that has now become known as the Country of the USA.

Another thought that begins twisting in my head is the idea of what I will call the European system. Simply because of the separation that exists between the countries. There are many nations playing right now, I don’t think it would be a far push to say well over 2,000. That’s well over what we see in Europe and probably even the world. Politics would be vastly different as would major wars. Instead of Alliances trying to maintain power, it would be large nations trying to maintain power. They would have to use their influence and money to gain them support. The senate elections would be held only by the largest, most influential, and wealthiest nations. Instead of calling it the European Method, I’ll call it the corporate method, as it seems that this is the way corporations work. It would revolutionize spheres. Instead of competing for alliance patriotism nations would fight for their sphere, and the larger government instead of being controlled by alliance leaders it would be controlled by the powerful only, given the mechanics of the game. It would allow spheres like Yellow and Pink to grow to huge heights, given the limited number of colors larger nations would either have to accept the rule of other nations or fight for their place within the sphere.

I can’t say which the best method is, because to be honest I don’t understand the game enough to enjoy, fully enjoy everything there is within the current method of playing. What do you think the game might be like under either of these methods? Do you see another possible way the world around us could have evolved? Do you think that the implications we see in this game can actively predict where the world is headed, that instead of being controlled by nations we will one day be controlled by the alliances our nations belong to?

Well at 3:08am, that’s all that’s on my mind right now. This is only my 2nd blog entry so please keep criticism in the constructive zone only. If you have any ideas on how I could improve this, please share them. I guess that’s all for now, this is the muddy dog signing out.

Well, as far as having different focuses, I'll point you towards a few places/people I know of. First off, The Order of the Black Rose is an alliance dedicated to RP; granted, there is definitely still an aspect of nation-building through an alliance, but it's a very different culture than your average CN alliance. Dame Hime Themis would be one to talk to if you're interested in what they do.

A former alliance you could take a look at would be Vox Populi - the second incarnation, I believe, if you happen to run into anything from the first. Nobody who joined Vox Populi after the first week or two expected to maintain their nation; it was built more around an ideal, and the players who joined it were either already well-recognized or became so. Many of the former members are scattered about CN, so they'd be able to give better input than I.

Finally, look up Rebel Virginia. He made a blog post the other day about fighting for the underdog; as far as I recall, he's been doing so since Vox Populi and perhaps from before then as well. That said, he'll probably make his presence known here on your blog at some point.

If you're interested in the idea of the game revolving around spheres, take a look at current and past color unity documents. Some, such as NOIR (black unity), are currently thriving. Others, like OUT (orange unity), had their time, but were eventually ripped apart due to other political pressures.

As far as how many nations are playing... there's a screen ingame that tells you exactly how many there are. :P Take a look at World Demographics, under the World Statistics link at the bottom of the sidebar. As of my post, there are 24,954 current active nations. Of those, approximately 20,000 have an alliance affiliation other than "None". Now, a number of those are ghosts, and a number of those are in soon to be defunct micro-alliances that haven't found the OWF yet. But I know that there are approxiately 7,000-8,000 nations in the top 35ish alliances.

Thank you Derantol, I'll look into what you've said, it is most interesting to hear of how others play the game. I am currently with the Realm of the Rose another part of the Rosular Kingdom of which OBR also belongs. I have studied Vox and I think their revolution within CN was very Interesting and I'd like to speak with Vox members and others in the community about the Sociological impact the alliance had. I have not yet, gotten to meet Rebel Virginia, but I know the blog. It was a good read, it reminded me of V for Vendetta's quote "Worlds will always hold their power" and I think Rebel Virginia understands that very well. You answered a lot for me, thank you. I'd be interested to know what you and others think about the evolution of the game had alliances not taken form.
