Shan Revan
In the eastern regions of Honshu, the islands of hokkaido, and gaum, a strange species had risen to dominence. This species was dependent upon photosynthesis for much of its energy, although it was capable of consuming flesh. Lacking any vocal systems, the metapods had developed a complicated commumnication system based on pheromones, body language and limited telepathy, able to convey an idea or semantic that would be otherwise difficult to convey. Ultimately despite their quirks however they were an insectoid creature and semi-hive minded. As such it didn't take long for the creatures to begin efficiently constructing several luxurious cities to live in. To date there were two major ones, Edo and Sapporo, with a few smaller settlements in their outlying territories. How they constructed such buildings was largely a mystery to any who should stumble upon this strange race as they lacked any visible appendages. This was ofcourse part of their defense mechanism, in actuality, each had several long limbs that were invisible in all but the lowest of EM spectrums. How was this so? Nobody knows: but it was so. Shan Revan
To better facilitate communications throughout their population, a communications grid was quickly established. Metapod scientists had manufactured a device that could accurately re-create the complex pheromones and weak EM signals that made up the majority of their language. Anyone who happened to listen in on the particular frequencies would here a strange variety of digital sounds (ooc: think a dialup modem). Maelstrom Vortex
The Storm Dragons weren't sure what to think of this strange signal. They attempted a verbal response, "This is a test, can anyone hear.. or understand us on this frequency?"
Shan Revan
The signal came across as largely unintelligble, but it was traced back and it was readily interpreted as an audio signal. Metapods may not be able to speak but they could hear, and living near to Kyokujitsu, they knew other species communicated vocally. At this time, they did were unable to translate the signal, so they merely returned the same message. Looping it, awaiting further response. Maelstrom Vortex
The looping was heard.. and it was assumed a similar response was desired for further diagnostic. They brought on a children's educational channel, as was the reaction of one of the other nations they'd spoken to, which taught basic linguistics for their language.. and turned its audio on the line. Shan Revan
It took a while, but after several weeks of listening to this, basics of the language were understood. A simple message was constructed to communicate with these people, the "storm dragons" or something. As they had no easy means of speaking the words, they merely used samples from recordings to constructed a disjointed sounding message. "Greatings, we are METAPODS located in METAPOD NATION on the other side of the PACIFIC OCEAN"

We are the Storm Dragon Empire. Can you give us the dimensions of your domain that we may register it on our maps?" The radioman would inquire. Shan Revan
Meanwhile, the Metapods were unifying. Previously having been a loosely associating series of minor city states, with the largest being based out of Edo with a series of warlords forever vying for conquest, but now a grand army set forth from Edo with a great many metapods in their new tanks and aircraft. Eventually they came to use aircraft as their primary weapons of war and developed devastating weapons for them. These weapons enabled the conquest to be achieved. At last the metapods were united but the war had damaged the metapod nation greatly and it would take some time to return to come to its full power.
