REGIONAL

Today, the Marscurian government has authorized the first trade mission to the barbarian civilizations on the continent.  The Vernewi, the most docile of the three major barbarian groups, inhabit the southern-most part of the continent, and have been noted as superb agriculturists, growing, among other things, high quality tea leaves.

"It is quite difficult to facilitate trade with the barbarian cultures," said Igor Tayboym, one of the leading importers from the south, "they have no real money, and of course do not recognize rubles, so we've had to revert to old-school bartering with them, offering food, fuel, consumer goods, stuff like that."

Despite the difficulties, trade is set to see an increase.  While imports from the south are currently estimated to come out at under 100 tons, it is hoped that the next year will see a rapid increase as existing relationships are expanded on.

Trouble is stirring in the western frontier of the empire.  Talks and actions relating to independence of several districts have been gaining steam, coming to a head in Finland, where politicians have recently voted for independence from Russia.  So far, all action by the Finns has been peaceful, largely votes in regional parliaments, however rumors of the creation of several militia-type forces and the insistence that Russian forces leave Finland foreshadows possible violence coming from the territory.  As tensions rise, there is no sign that the government in Moscow will heed to the demands of Finnish separatists.  In Marscury, Eliezer Perlman and Iosef Brenner, heads of the Marscurian National Party, have been placed under house arrest so that they cannot use these turbulent times to spread traitorous lies and separatist filth.

As the situation on Russia's frontiers continues to degrade, the country appears to be moving more and more into a full scale war!  Along with intense fighting already occurring in the caucuses, the situation in the Ukraine is teetering towards the abyss.  Already, heavily armed bandits attacked government buildings in Kiev, brutally murdering the regional governor and his wife.  The regional parliament was also captured by these thugs, who used the occasion to declare the Ukraine independent from our glorious motherland!  In the harshest possible terms, Prime Minister Matriyenko promised to bring those responsible for the chaos to justice.  In the Pasirung Military District, commanding officer Col. Gen. Marantzbaum has ordered all active duty soldiers from the five Marscurian armies to prepare for immediate deployments to the conflict zones in the west, should the Russian high command call for it.

With temperatures dropping across the continent, the Ministry of Transportation's Pasirung office has declared shipping season closed on all freshwater waterways.  Dangerous ice formations have been forming for the past several weeks, but only recently has the entirety of several important rivers, including the Teich and the Pasirung Tunguska, been covered in impassable ice.  The river patrol vessels of the coast guard have returned to their home ports in Leninskoye and Mietonka, and members of the Frontier Guard have taken up posts along the rivers to keep a watch for smugglers and hostile barbarian incursions.  When the ice is thick enough, a road will be set over the Teich River, allowing for trucks to reach the Vernewi to facilitate trade.

Troubles continue to stir in the Ukraine as rebels in the west of the region have declared an independent Nordic state, built on the fascist ideas championed by the ideology.  Soldiers from both the west and Siberia have been stretched thin defending our borders in the west and the south, bogged down in heavy guerrilla campaigns.  As all Russian forces are mobilized to face the separatist threat, Marscurian soldiers are no different.  The Russian Pacific Naval Infantry division is currently being mobilized to deploy to Ukrainian cities along the Black Sea, which are of vital economic and military significance to Russia.

Emergency crews are working around the clock in the mountainous regions in the west to try to rescue travelers trapped by several avalanches that occurred in mountain passes used for vital transportation routes.  Marscurian Railways are reporting that a train was swept off the tracks near Obluchye with 114 passengers on board, while helicopter photography has shown three separate locations where the Great North Road has been rendered impassable.  Civil workers and the military have been mustered into rescue operations, with snow being removed via heavy machinery, manual labor, and even soldiers with flamethrowers, and have so far rescued over 100 travelers, and have found 12 bodies as well.  Many of the bodies found were not killed by hypothermia, but by carbon monoxide poisoning as engines were left running after cars were covered in snow.  Roads throughout the region have been closed as rocket propelled grenades have been used to trigger controlled avalanches in vital areas that are in danger.  Roads are expected to be cleared by the middle of the week, and trains are expected to resume service by next weekend.

REGIONAL

Due to a lack of resource exploitation infrastructure on the continent, much of the raw materials used in Marscurian industry need to be imported from Asia and North America.  To counter this, the Duma has passed the Pasirung Resource Salvage and Conservation Act.  Under this act, government-run recycling and salvage centers will receive funds for improvements and expansions, and private companies will receive subsidies and tax breaks to aid in their establishment.  Anything that cannot be salvaged will be sent to special plants that will either burn refuse to create electricity or will anaerobically digest organic matter to produce methane, ethanol, and hydrogen.  The process, first implemented in the industrial city of Obluchye, has seen massive successes, with massive amounts of raw materials salvaged, enough natural gas produced to fuel all municipal vehicles, and almost 5 GW of electricity produced by the incineration plants placed around the city.

The first route of Marscurian Rail's high speed train is set to begin regular service this Sunday.  The route, which will form the beginning of the Orange Line when completed, is set to run between the cities of Pashkovo and Laym, making three stops in Obluchye and one stop in the suburb of Kimkam.  Running 9 times a day, trips take as short as three hours including just over an hour of time spend in the various stations.  The trains and carriages are the same Sapsan units used on the St. Petersberg-Moscow line, and are able to reach 350 km/h thanks to improvements in the tracks, although they must substantially reduce speed while traveling through heavily-populated areas.  The line is expected to next reach the towns of Birakan and Londoko before entering Marscury where it will meet up with the Green and Blue Lines.

Construction has increased pace on the A235 federal highway, known locally as the Great North Road.  The road is planned to be the major roadway of the Grois Rayon, running from Pashkovo on the western border to Marscury, connecting the major settlements along the way.  Progress has been slow, as the highway has needed to bore through the hard rock of the Kitaisk Mountains, and is elevated on stilts for major portions as it runs along the Bira River to keep the road open during spring flooding, but the road is operational up to the town of Laym, about half way to Marscury.    It is expected to be many months before the road reaches its destination, but once complete, it is expected to drastically improve transportation to the west, and many are hoping that it will open the forests and mountains of the region to economic exploitation.

WAR SPREADS IN THE WEST!  The situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate as rebels in Odessa have expelled the Russian garrison, now camped just outside the city.  Soldiers are also on high alert in Finland, Latvia, and Estonia, as local independence movements have gained traction in the provinces.  Meanwhile, war has spread in the Caucuses as well, as Russian troops enter Georgia in coordinated anti-terror activities.  Facing little to no resistance, Russian soldiers are closing in on the Georgian capital of Tblisi, no doubt to remove the fascists who occupy the city and illegitimately claim authority over the region.  In their push south, Russian soldiers have taken stations along the Trans-Caucus canal, ensuring that fascists will never regain control of the key waterway connecting the Black and Caspian Seas.  Colonel General Mikhail Marantzbaum, commander of the Pasirung Military District, as not ruled out future Marscurian involvement in quashing these revolts, especially the mobilization of the elite 42nd "Kontinentalniy" Army based in Azerbaijan.

The Teich River has been fully open to traffic for the past several weeks, however the waters have been disturbingly calm.  The lumber ships and grain barges that form the bulk of Teich river traffic have seen percentage decreases in the double digits as foreign sales have continued to plummet.  Decreases in demand, rather than supply, are the major causes of the decrease in traffic, but the news does not change the feelings of the rivermen who are stuck in port.

"Every day we're not moving is a day we lose money," said Dmitri Shifmann, captain of a lumber barge that at this point last year was already being loaded for its second journey, "I still need to pay to maintain the boats, pay the crew, and keep up on the licenses and fees."

While there are many months to go in the current shipping season, the situation seems unlikely to change drastically.

The situation in the west is beginning to calm, allowing most Russian troops moved into Ukraine, Finland, and the Baltics to return to their locations further in the nation.  While peace has not been fully restored, and many locations, including cities like Odessa, still have a heavy rebel presence, the government in Moscow has decided to distribute more resources to local police forces to crush what is left of the rebellion rather than further directly inject more soldiers into the situation.  The news comes as a relief to many around the nation who feared that the feelings of treasonous nationalism would spread further, and that an extended period of conflict was in the future.

Although the protests remained largely peaceful, hundreds of police officers were on hand to contain any trouble that may have occurred.  The protests dissipated by the end of the day, although more ardent citizens have vowed to return until their party is allowed back in elections.  The Marscurian Nationalist Party has been the subject of government scrutiny for months, but after weapons were found in the homes of some of the prominent members, the party was officially banned.

A brief uprising in the Caucuses has been put down by Russian soldiers, who managed to scatter rebels and kill or capture many of their leaders.  The uprising came in the midst of a full scale fascist insurrection in the Ukraine.  Urged on by propaganda to open a second front against government forces, Chechen and Dagestani rebels, many of them Islamists, sought to declare independence again.  Poorly lead and equipped, the main force of these rebels was soundly defeated a week after their campaing began.  A previous uprising in the Caucuses was crushed in April, 2015.  A large contingent of soldiers formerly stationed in Azerbaijan has been deployed to keep the peace in region.  The situation in the Ukraine has previously been placed on the back burner, but as the war there threatens all of Russia's frontier regions, a swift and decisive end to the conflict has been given full priority.
