AUGUSTINE EMPIRE PUSHES CUMBERLAND BACK TO ORIGINAL BORDERS

512_AlexanderFisher2.JPG

Emperor Alexander Augustus

GATLINBURG -- The well-intentioned Cumberland march east has now ended where it started. The Augustine Empire has marched back west, pushing Cumberland back to its original borders. The Augustine Empire would not comment on whether or not it intended to halt their march at the old border, or if they would continue pushing into Cumberland territory proper.

In further baseball news, a new league has been announced, primarily in the Alleghenian cities, called the Appalachian Baseball League. The League will begin play next spring and will be broadcast exclusively on Mountain Broadcasting Company stations.

APPALACHIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE BEGINS PLAY

JA_BaltimoreBlues1.JPGJA_ClarksburgWildcats1.JPGJA_HalifaxSharks1.JPGJA_PhiladelphiaPhantoms1.JPGJA_RichmondStars1.JPG

The Five Franchises of the Appalachian Baseball League

PHILADELPHIA -- The Appalachian Baseball League will begin play this afternoon with the opening game featuring the Philadelphia Phantoms and the Baltimore Blues. The new baseball league is the outcome of three Atlantic Baseball League greats: Devin Valdez the recently retired first baseman from the Pittsburgh Hornets who was present for all five of their championship wins, Justin Washburn the Rossingol Robins second baseman in their inaugural seasons and more recently head coach for the Pittsburgh Hornets with a total of 8 championships as a player and coach, and Mia Sanchez the starting pitcher for the Albany Bears during their inaugural years and three time champion who more recently has been calling games for EBC.

These three know the baseball business, and are clearly trying to recreate the success of the Atlantic Baseball League in a new market. The five teams in the new league are located in Baltimore, Clarksburg, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Halifax--all in Alleghenia and Acadia. Over the past few years, they have built out the radio network for the Mountain Broadcasting Company, which now has stations throughout Alleghenia and western J Andres.

The question will be if there is room on the airwaves for two separate leagues. The Atlantic Baseball League has continued to grow total listening over the years, but the average listeners per regular season game has declined, as the length of the season has grown. There are 540 total games a year, and even if you want to only listen to your favorite team, that's still 104 games that you need to dial in for. The Appalachian League in comparison only has 120 total games and 48 for each team, a much more manageable number for a potential fan. The league also will use the designated hitter rule, in an attempt to increase scoring in games and make them more thrilling to listen to.

NASHVILLE -- The Augustine Army has continued its push west through Cumberland and are moving at a rapid rate. The Cumberland Army has been unable to respond to the Augustine Empire, and are primarily retreating to the capital of Nashville. Desertion among the Cumberland troops are high. King Martin has ordered the city gates of Nashville shut, and is seeking refuge for the royal family if the city is attacked.

CHANCELLOR LEWIS POLLING LOW FOR REELECTION

Chancellor of Foreign Affairs Walter Lewis

ENDOR CUIDAD -- Chancellor of Foreign Affairs Walter Lewis is polling low in new reports from the Pacific Radio Network. No candidates have currently declared their intent to challenge him, but low popularity resulting from the failure to reach a free trade agreement with Detchitoria and a disappointment over the lack of gains for J Andres in the war with the Eastern Union are the two main complaints against him.

AUGUSTINE EMPIRE CONQUERS CUMBERLAND AND F.C. OF CINCINNATI

512_AlexanderFisher2.JPG

Emperor Alexander Augustus

NASHVILLE -- The Augustine Empire has conquered the city of Nashville and with it, the Kingdom of Cumberland. The Free City of Cincinnati has also fallen to the Empire. "Our northern borders are now secure," Emperor Alexander Augustus said in a brief statement this afternoon. "Peace and Security has been improved on the continent."

Unclear are the status of King Martin and the rest of the royal family, including heir apparent Princess Arabella and her husband, J Andres-born Lucas, or their two year old child.

ENDOR CUIDAD -- The three Chancellors of the Crown Council have approved the plan to reinstate the Commune with the only modification to limit the total Senators to no more than 45. HALIFAX WINS APPALACHIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

JA_HalifaxSharks1.JPG

CLARKSBURG, ALLEGHENIA -- The Halifax Sharks (27-21) are the first champions of the Appalachian Baseball League. They defeated top ranked Clarksburg Wildcats (28-20) in a thrilling Game 5 to win the championship series 3-2.

The season was thrilling, with the play-by-play commentary led by Mia Sanchez and other former greats.  The designated hitter rule and the shorter season with more at stake each game seemed to be a hit with fans in J Andres, and for those in Alleghenia and Acadia, having a hometown team to root for meant the radio was tuned to MBC more often the EBC.

Devin Valdez, commissioner of the league presented the Halifax Sharks with the championship trophy. After the game he said, "We are pleased with the success of this season, and looking forward to many more."

NEW HORIZON PARTY AND LEWIS DEFEATED, EDITH BARTLETT WINS

512_EdithBartlett1.JPG

Chancellor-elect Edith Bartlett

ENDOR CUIDAD -- In the final Chancellor election, before the positions will be replaced in two years, Edith Bartlett of the Labor party handed incumbent Walter Lewis and the New Horizon party a stunning defeat. Walter Lewis has been blamed for much over the course of his term, but seeing the New Horizon party lose an election is an uncommon occurrent. Bartlett had run unsuccessfully for President multiple times on an anti-war platform. She was promoted highly by the Labor party and on the Pacific Radio Network stations, which have hired former perennial Labor candidate Fred Campbell to provide commentary.

"My term will be short," Bartlett said at her victory speech, "But they will be a productive two years."

ROSSINGOL -- Edward Kensington will turn 70 this year, and has announced that he intends to retire from his CEO role at Annan Enterprises within the next five years. The four cousins will each run one of the company's four business units. In early 2161, the board will meet discuss the performance of the four business units and the candidates, and narrow the candidates down to two. Annan Enterprises has also inked a deal with the Eastern Broadcasting Company to air a weekly series, following the familial drama. "The Apprentice" can be found on your local EBC station, Wednesdays at 8PM.

Keylon Kensington will lead Irving Marine Corporation.

Anne Kensington will lead Syracuse Steel.

Sydney Annan will lead Annan Arms.

Megan Annan will lead the Rossingol Robins.

AUGUSTINE EMPIRE INVADES ELEGADA

Sol3_AugustineFlag.pngTikalflag.png

Flags of the Augustine Empire and the Dominion of Elegada

[CAMPBELL] Here we are again folks. The dust from the war with the Eastern Union and Cumberland has barely settled and already in another corner of the continent it begins again.

[Sounds of Gunfire in the distance]

[CAMPBELL] This is Pacific Radio Network Nightly News, and I'm your host, Fred Campbell. This time, the war rages in the south. Less than a year ago, the Augustine Empire marched into Cumberland, slaughtering the royal family and countless citizens. Now it is time for the Dominion of Elegada to either defend themselves against the strong and capable Empire, or perish.

[Spanish speaking rapidly]

[TRANSLATOR] We were at the market, and all of a sudden, BANG BANG BANG. I ran out of there as fast as I could. I'm still looking for my wife.

[CAMPBELL] That was the sounds in Tampico this afternoon, as the Imperial forces moved south beyond their own borders into the peaceful Dominion of Elegada. There have been no statements from Pensacola explaining the seemingly unprovoked attack. Instead, we must assume what we always have about the Augustine Empire. They cannot, and will not stop, until the Gulf of Mexico is fully theirs. Elegada is the one nation that stands in their way of that dream. Joining me now is Chancellor of Foreign Affairs and a good friend of our show, Edith Bartlett.

[BARTLETT] Thanks for having me, Fred.

[CAMPBELL] Chancellor, what do you make of the Augustine aggression this afternoon?

[BARTLETT] As you said, it was the first emperor's dream to consolidate the Gulf of Mexico, and while for the last decade or decade in a half, we have seen the Empire focusing its efforts elsewhere, such as with Cumberland last year, or supporting Tahoe's wars in the west before that, it is clear that they want to manifest that destiny.

[CAMPBELL] Will they stop there? What's to say they stop when they conquer Elegada?

[BARTLETT] Nothing says they will stop. This is a country that is warmongering and driven by aggression. I don't believe they will stop with Elegada gone. Once they own the Gulf, they will want to go west over the mountains and control access to the Pacific too. There is no stopping the Empire once they want something.

[CAMPBELL] Thanks, Chancellor. We will talk some more with the Chancellor about her first few months in office after this, but first, a word from our sponsor...

BALTIMORE WINS APPALACHIAN LEAGUE

JA_BaltimoreBlues1.JPG

PHILADELPHIA, ALLEGHENIA -- The second season of the Appalachian Baseball League reached an end, with the Baltimore Blues (28-20) defeating the Philadelphia Phantoms (26-22) three games to one. The new league has continued to prove popular not only within Alleghenia, but here in J Andres also. The OSR noted that traveling down the Eastern Atlantic line was up 40% over the course of the championship. With both teams in the championship so close physically, not only was travel up, but sports gambling. The casinos in Annapolis logged some of their highest player counts.

COUNTESS OF LANIER TO LEAD BATTLESHIP DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

512_RuthVicksburg2.JPG

Ruth, Countess of Lanier

ROSSINGOL -- Ruth, Countess of Lanier, and active naval service member, has been deployed to the Kensington Mews Shipyard in Rossingol to oversee the design and construction of a new class of battleship. The Chancellor of Defense has specified the battleship should be of steel hull construction and be steam powered. "The Countess's long years of service in our navy make her uniquely qualified to oversee this critical mission. Our navy must enter a new age," said Chancellor Marty Taylor.

The city of Rossingol, once the manufacturing center of the nation, has been quiet in recent years and shipbuilding shifted more to Halifax, and other manufacturing shifted to Syracuse. "I'm excited to see new ships sailing down the Thames," said Edgar, Duke of Rossingol.

TAHOE JOINS AGAINST ELEGADA

512_EthanODargan1.JPG

President of New Tahoe, Ethan O'Dargan

[CAMPBELL] The war rages in the south, yet here in J Andres, the discussion is all about which baseball league you're following. The Atlantic, or the Appalachian?

[Sounds of Gunfire in the distance, followed by the crack of a baseball bat]

[CAMPBELL] This is Pacific Radio Network Nightly News, and I'm your host, Fred Campbell. The Augustine Empire has been at war with Elegada for nearly a year, making slow, but steady progress. Today, a breaking development, as the President of New Tahoe joins the fray, sending their armed forces down to the Yucatan. Joining me today, our dear friend, Chancellor of Foreign Affairs, Edith Bartlett.

[BARTLETT] Thanks, Fred, always a pleasure.

[CAMPBELL] The war is nearly hitting the year mark. Why does Tahoe join now? Is this a sign that things are going poorly in the Empire?

[BARTLETT] Quite the opposite. The Empire is still strong, and I think Tahoe's entry shows that. New Tahoe didn't want to enter this war, but I believe they've been forced into it.

[CAMPBELL] Forced?

[BARTLETT] Yes. Over the last decade, Tahoe has benefited immensely from their friendship with the Augustine Empire. They've at least quadrupled their territory. None of that wold have been possible without the Empire backing them. Now it's Augustine's turn. I'm sure the Emperor was surprised to see that Tahoe didn't jump into this sooner, and I guarantee that one of the three Dukes travelled to Tahoe over the last month and made the Emperor's intentions very clear.

[CAMPBELL] What do you think this means for the war effort?

[BARTLETT] The Empire was always going to win this war, but this should hasten things up.

[CAMPBELL] And how about our relations with the Empire?

[BARTLETT] There is no denying that the Empire is a good friend to have. I've visited the Emperor, and he holds J Andres in high regard. However, offers come with strings attached. It's important to be friendly but wary.

[CAMPBELL] Thanks, Chancellor. We will talk some more with the Chancellor about her thoughts on the upcoming elections, but first, a word from our sponsor...

PRN ENDORSES LABOR PARTY CANDIDATES

512_EdithBartlett1.JPGJA_LaborParty1.JPG512_BohdanAksenov1.JPG

Labor Party Candidates Edith Bartlett and Bohdan Aksenov

[CAMPBELL] This year's elections are important and your choices will send 42 senators to Endor Cuidad to be your voice.

[Indistinct rioting sounds]

[CAMPBELL] This is Pacific Radio Network Nightly News, and I'm your host, Fred Campbell. I'm very exciting this evening, because our news desk has been working very hard, and today we are able to share with you our own thoughts on the upcoming elections. Myself and a number of the other reporters and anchors here have discussed it, and PRN is officially endorsing the Labor Party slate of candidates.

[Indistinct cheering noises]

[CAMPBELL] I know, I know. I was a Labor party candidate myself numerous times. It may not surprise you to learn that I still support the Labor party ideals. But this isn't just my voice, this is the voice of our news desk. And before any of you start thinking this is from our station owners out west, think again! We are an independent news organization.

[CAMPBELL] Dr. Bohdan Aksenov has worked tirelessly over the last decade to improve rural healthcare to those furthest from the cities. This year, one of the biggest issues is the growing income inequality between the haves and the have-nots. Don't you think Dr. Aksenov will have your best interest in mind? President Eleanor Mueller has been directly or indirectly running the nation for the better part of the last 20 years. If you are unhappy with how things are going, don't you think she is to blame?

[CAMPBELL] And, you know how much I adore Chancellor Edith Bartlett. She is a great friend of the show, always willing to take time out of her schedule and talk directly to you. She is a great voice of the people, and she is doing great things trying to temper the rising tensions on the continent. Her voice will be a loud one in the Commune.

[CAMPBELL] I hope that when October rolls around, you will think hard about the ballot in front of you, and select your local Labor party candidates. They will improve your lives, and the nation. Dr. Aksenov is here, and we will be talking to him shortly, but first, a word from our sponsor...

CLARKSBURG WINS APPALACHIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

JA_ClarksburgWildcats1.JPG

Logo of the Clarksburg Wildcats

PHILADELPHIA -- The Clarksburg Wildcats (26-22) defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms (26-22) to win the Appalachian League Championship this evening. This is the first championship for Clarksburg.

More significant than Clarksburg's victory is likely the growing audience for the new baseball league within J Andres. Although no team's are located within J Andres borders, the games have all had similar audiences to the the Atlantic Baseball League which features mostly domestic teams. The Appalachian League's schedule is shorter meaning each game has more meaning to the season's standings, but also, the commentary led by legendary Albany Bears pitcher, Mia Sanchez, has been vivid, so much more so than the EBC Atlantic broadcasts. Listeners often feel that they are on the field.

The league also took big steps towards financial viability, announcing that franchise purchase deals have been signed for the Philadelphia Phantoms and the Baltimore Blues by the Pittsburgh Philadelphia Railway and the Admirals Club Casino, respectively. The other three franchises are still owned by Mountain Broadcasting Company and are available for purchase.

The Eastern Broadcasting Company has taken notice of the new league and sources say executives are watching carefully. There is anxiousness in the executive suite that the audience for baseball may only be so big, and act some point, the upstart league could be more entertaining and engaging.
