Hereno
The naval diplomatic expedition sent out by Brazil had a large contingency headed for Europe. Their first stop, after following the African coast up, was Cabo Verde. The Brasileiros knew that the residents of these islands spoke Portuguese, and hoped to learn more about the situation around the world from its inhabitants. However, upon getting close, the islanders began shooting at the navy with small arms which could hardly make a dent in the ships, if they had even been in range. The ships bombarded the shoreline, and all 20,000 of the soldiers on this part of the expedition prepared to deploy and pacify the population. After a few hours, the takeover was complete, and the archipelago was brought under control of the Confederacy of Brazil. Using it's resources, and conscripting soldiers from the local population, they would have a much easier time communicating with Europe, North Africa, and eventually, the Balkans or even the Crimea region. Half of the force stayed behind, as did a few ships, in order to keep order and raise the flag of the Confederacy. The population was very much accepting of the advanced yet friendly Brasilieros, as it turns out that the people shooting had started an unpopular but well-armed despotic regime. After a vote, the people confirmed their desire to become an official state of Brazil. Hereno
The expedition would find upon sailing northward that Portugal, their brethren country, no longer existed. Rather than stopping here, they pressed forward until they saw a familiar European flag; that of the French Empire. Stopping near Arcachon, near Bordeaux in Gascony, they broadcasted their mission of peace, and, as in other places, sent a small detachment on a minor boat towards the shore. Hereno
[Classified]Cabo Verde, BrazilMaterials are being shipped to Cabo Verde in order to upgrade it's ports and airfields for heavy commercial as well as military use. The 10,000-strong force of mainlander soldiers will be training a newly-recruited force of 35,000 islanders before heading back home. The equipment of the archipelago will be replaced with Brazilian standard equipment, and the islanders have been discussing anti-naval as well as anti-aircraft fortifications, primarily for the purpose of protecting trade and their shiny new toys. However, many islanders are against any more militarization than already planned, and question whether or not Brazilian fortifications will make their homeland more likely to be targeted by enemies in the event of a war. Their opponents, however, insist that adequate fortifications will deter aggressors which will naturally follow the economic boom associated with the archipelago's trade importance to the Confederacy. The issue of militarization is the major one influencing the outcome of the upcoming elections for the state's representatives.Salvador da Bahia, BrazilThe Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Aeroespacial (DCTA), based in São Paulo, has been tasked with engineering Brazil's first IRBM-type missile, as well as to continue the development of the AVTM-300 cruise missile. The DCTA is expected to present the military with designs later this month, as well as a timeline for development and production. Hereno
[Classified]Somewhere in the Amazon region, Brazil "Yes... yes..." the man thought to himself, "this is exactly what we're looking for." Wearing a protective suit to prevent infection, the man scrolled down the page with his eyes. There had been an outbreak in several villages of a new type of hantavirus. While initially indistinguishable from other flu-like viruses, hantaviruses are known for causing a delayed but quick build-up of fluid in the lungs, with around 38% of persons dying from respiratory failure caused by pulmonary edema within five days time. This virus in particular has been particularly troublesome for his team to combat, currently responsible for killing approximately 53% of those who have been confirmed as having contracted it. The man recognized the potential of this virus and relayed the information to the appropriate persons. Within days, the virus would be isolated and transported to secret and secure facilities for further testing. Scientists would find, as they suspected, that the virus was carried by rodents and would over the course of several months develop a treatment to control the spread of the virus within the region. However, all of this was to remain strictly confidential, as several state's research facilities would begin working in joint with the military to weaponize this virus and hopefully engineer it to be spread not only through contact with rats, but through contaminated water supplies, as well as to survive in the environment or airborne for several days. Hereno
Across the country, Catholics welcome the election of a new Pope. Brazil has always been home to a cosmopoltian population, and they see the election of a non-European Pope as positive, even if from eastern Asia. Catholics across the eighteen states have also welcomed the appointment of Fr. Frederico Álvares to the position of Primate of Brazil. While numbers of persons identifying themselves as non-religious are at all-time highs, the Catholic traditions of Brazil are close to the hearts of millions. It is their hope that the country will rediscover its faith through the help of these new ecclesiastical leaders. The Northlands had long ago established a protectorate over these islands after the fall of the Vatican and supported the local administrations. Hereno
A Conquista das Fronteiras! "Alright men, listen up!"The gravely voice of the prominent old general swallowed the room as he leaned over the large rectangular table at the center of the room. On it was a map. Current Brazilian territories were in orange, in relation to the territories of the once proud Brazilian state which were clad in green. Curiously, several territories were yellow: these were to be reunited with the Confederacy.[ooc]Click for a bigger image[/ooc]"I'm sure you've all heard about the raids from the west..." he began, relaxing. "Well, as of last night, the Congress of States has authorized four separate actions which they believe will put an end to these raids, and it's our job to make sure they're right. We're the first of four fangs that are going to rip through this territory and make those !@#$%^&* wish they'd have kept to raiding to the south. First, we're going to follow the Amazon down to the city of Manaus, where the Mayor is eager to get some help before the city gets taken over. The city council has already voted to rejoin the Confederacy, but only if we're able to secure the city."He cracked his knuckles, before continuing the explanation. "That's, of course, dependent on us cutting of the bandit's supply lines and fortifying the road all the way through the jungle to Porto Velho. By the time we have the northern corridor secure, the second task force starting from Cachimbo will cover our backs and eventually reinforce our position from Cuiaba, after they've taken and secured Caceres. Rondonopolis is already in the process of being formally annexed in, and our actions combined with those of task force two will cut off supply to the southern corridor. After we give the OK, the third task force, starting in Sante Fe do Sul, will move to clear out the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and allow them to join us, as per an agreement already made with the regional authority in Campo Grande.""Last but not least, the big guns will drive out of the São Paulo metro area and blast their way through the concrete jungle all the way to Florianopolis, which is where we believe we'll come into the greatest amount of resistance. All in all, the Confederacy stands to gain large swaths of our former territory in addition to six new States..." He wrinkled his brow, before shouting "So don't $%&@ it up, got it?!""Alright, good. The river boats are already waiting for us - let's head out and get this party started." Edited June 10, 2014 by Hereno
Hereno
Brazilian News Network Manaus, Confederacy of Brazil "Marina Santiago here, on scene at Manaus where the Brazilian Guard has successfully entered and begun defending the city from raiders deep within the Amazon. No shots have been fired yet I have on good authority, and here with me now is General Silveira who has been leading the push this afternoon!" General Silveira, in juxtaposition to the bubbly reporter, gives a small but hearty grunt along with a frown as his name is mentioned. "General, what can you share---" Marina would be cut off by the loud popping of gunshots in the background. The General's eyes would widen a bit, before quickly excusing himself and running back towards the city. "Ugh!" Ms. Santiago complained, swinging her arms in frustration. Realizing that the camera was still rolling, she immediately composed herself and stated in her usual personality "We'll be back soon with---" the cameraman stopped filming and the signal from the field would die out. Hereno
Nuclear Intentions Salvador da Bahia, Confederacy of Brazil Premier Priscila Ferreira with an air of confidence and grace walks up to the podium, smiling and waving to her people. After a few moments to gather her thoughts and bask in the cheering, she asked the audience to quiet down so that she could begin her speech. "Thank you, thank you everyone. Let me start out tonight by addressing concerns over military actions in our frontiers to the south and west. Our outlying territories for some time now have been subject to harassment, most of which has thankfully been prevented by our guard and by the state militias. However, the Guard very recently, as you know, gained intelligence showing the consolidation of the bandit groups on our borders which have resulted in increasingly large and daring violations of our sovereignty. It is for these reasons, in partnership with the local authorities in the outlying regions, that we will secure and assimilate these territories into Brazil once again." She pauses for applause, but gets surprisingly little. However, she presses forward; "The first of which, Manaus, has already been successfully assimilated and defended to be incorporated into what will be our 19th state, Amazonas. Soon, even more objectives will be completed, with our goal of defending both our own sovereignty and that of others being - as usual - one and the same. However, the border raids are not what I called this conference for. For decades, Brazilians have rightly disavowed the development of nuclear weapons unilaterally as a way to help push the world towards a more peaceful and prosperous future. However, our noble objective has failed, as evidenced by the global collapse which plunged the world into darkness. In order to guarantee our safety against those who would deprive us of our liberty, I have authored a bill and now signed it into law. This bill will push forward, using our superior nuclear technology for defensive purposes. We will be a nuclear nation, and with the new missile technologies we've been rediscovering, will soon not only be able to reach other continents with both nuclear and conventional missiles, but be able to defend ourselves from these attacks with our own anti-missile technologies. Never again will Brazil be brought to the brink of destruction by the foolish actions of others. We will stand strong in the face of adversity!" Hereno
The News in 60 Seconds "Hello everyone, I'm Marina Santiago and this is the news in 60 seconds." 1. "Brazilian forces have successfully gained control of the states of Rondonia and Mato Grosso, as well as the portion of Amazonas that will now be referred to as Novas Amazonas in order to, according to locals, engender national character." 2. "The Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Aeroespacial (DCTA), based in São Paulo, has unveiled the completed AVTM-300 "Matador" cruise missile. It has a range of only 300km and while it is capable of carrying nuclear payloads of up to 150kt, the armed forces have no plans to develop it for use outside of conventional warfare." 3. "The DCTA has also released information about an until-now top secret ballistic missile development project. Within just a few months, the DCTA promises it can have in production the first ICBM ever manufactured in Brazilian territory. While the exact details are highly classified, it is expected to have a range of at least 7,500km and a maximum yield of approximately 1.2MT." Hereno
[Classified]Fronteiras, Confederacy of BrazilWith the territorial gains made by the Peruvian state across the Amazon, bandit groups have lost significant moving space and been forced towards the relatively insecure fledgling state of Novas Amazonas in the far northwest. The 15,000 troops currently holding the line between Manaus and Porto Velho in Rondonia are being reinforced with 5,000 more from Mato Grosso and being given additional aerial support. The third and fourth strike teams have been told to hold position and wait for orders, delaying movements further south due to the instability of the northwest. However, city forces in Campo Grande have reported a decline in raiding activity, noting that militants have began heading north and challenging the southern border of Mato Grosso near Cuaiba. Following confirmation, the Guard is expected to order the third strike team to move in to Campo Grande and sandwich the raiders between lines.Key:Dark orange: Current territory of BrazilLight orange: Occupied new statesYellow: States without troop presenceGreen: Brazilian borders circa 2014 OOC:[spoiler]Continued from...Original invasion plans: http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?/topic/122091-vida-e-esperanca/#entry3267621Capture of Manaus: http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?/topic/122091-vida-e-esperanca/#entry3268111Capture of Rondonia and Mato Grosso: http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?/topic/122091-vida-e-esperanca/#entry3268578[/spoiler] Edited June 13, 2014 by Hereno

Hereno
The Brazilian government is now guaranteeing the independence of the peoples of Bolivia. We are working with Bolivians to rebuild their communities and secure their own interests independent of Brazil or any other foreign power. Our mission is to bring greater stability to the region and to South America in general, as well as doing our duty as a strong, independent state which borders such relatively disadvantaged peoples.[Private] The Brazilian government is now engaged in humanitarian support throughout the region of Bolivia. This includes medical supplies, food, clean water, and providing weapons and training for the self defense of communities. It also includes helping to rebuild structures of importance and allowing Bolivians access to educational facilities within Brazil. The Brazilian armed forces hopes that this lessens the ranks of the raiders attacking Brazilian frontier states, but also provides a bulwark against encroachment on the region by the Hawaiians operating in Chile, or the Peruvians next door.
