Franz Josef Land....

The British task force landed on FJL and began securing the limited facilities and the airfields that were spread out across the archipelago. The helicopters that were attached to the warships struggled in the harsh conditions, but none the less allowed the british forces to cover the islands.

Over several weeks, the Anglican Corps and a small army of contractors and military engineers made their way to the new territory under heavy naval escort. Dozens of large transports guided by ice breakers made their way north to the Islands to unload to cargo.

The first few things to be built would be the fortifications of the existing settlementsto make them more hardy and reinforced. Engineers began resurfacing the runways whilst the civilian contractors worked on the facilities.

New Program - Filename HELLADS

Description
The goal of the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS) program is to develop a high-energy laser weapon system (~150 kilowatt) with an order-of-magnitude reduction in weight compared to existing laser systems. With a weight goal of less than five kilograms per kilowatt, HELLADS will enable high-energy lasers to be integrated onto tactical aircraft and unmanned air vehicles, and will significantly increase engagement ranges compared to ground-based systems.

The Anglican Corps fanned out over the Islands and were press Ganges into helping engineers and contractors to construct bases, depots and forward operating bases. RAF heavy transport jets were continually running logistics missions carrying food and fuel. Mobile radar was established as HMS Hermes and HMS Cumberland arrived at the islands delivering a vital supply of Chinook helicopters and mobile ground to air missile launchers.

The shipping convoys remained steady to and from England carrying men, materials and other vital equipment.

New Project - Britannia Anti Ship Ballistic Missile

An anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) is a military quasiballistic missile, of medium or intermediate range, designed to hit a warship at sea. Because of speeds typically reaching mach 10 there are currently no known ship-board defense mechanisms that could counter an ASBM in the terminal phase.

ASBM are equipped with a conventional warhead large enough, together with the kinetic energy, that a single hit has the potential to cripple or outright destroy a supercarrier, but unlike nuclear weapons have to hit the target precisely to be effective. Thus, and unlike a typical ballistic missile, which follows a sub-orbital ballistic flightpath after the relatively brief initial powered phase of flight, an ASBM would require a precise and high-performance terminal guidance system.

With tensions rising in Spain, and through a chain effect, possibly on the borders with the UK the military was placed on Amber alert in England.
Amber being the second highest security rating England had as far as National Defence went. State media broadcast bulletins to the population informing them to keep their NBC suits and gasmasks ready at hand or to collect a free suit from local military installations.

Northern, West Country and West Midlands commands were made ready to immediate deployment whilst South East and East Midlands command was prepared to move North and West.

RAF bases across the Nation began arming and fueling their aircraft aswell as long range bombers. AWAC's E-3 sentries took off and began monitering the airspace in the border regions aswell as North sea and Irish sea airspace. AWAC's in the Irish sea area stayed within the British territorial waters/international waters what little slip of it there was. In the North Sea the AWACS could fly out and moniter the entire northern approaches over and and sea. KC-X refuelling tankers were onstation to extend operational activities.

The SKYNET satellite system stayed focussed over the British isles, specifically at the Scottish and Welsh borders looking for increased activity but saw none for the moment which eased the minds of the British security forces, though with things happening in spain as this was taking place it wasnt pushed too far from the front of their minds.

However, mobile starstreak anti air defences were deployed in higher intensity in the border towns aswell as MIM-104F patriot batteries for longer range interception. RAF GB-2 Bulldogs were deployed to the northern and eastern regions of England in force.

With 60 of the Bulldogs on foreign deployment, 7 squadrons would take the Anglo Welsh border regions and 7 squadrons would take the Anglo Scot border regions. A further 7 squadrons of G-1 Sparrow interceptor jets were deployed to each of the regions bringing total airborne air to air defences close to 280 aircrafts.

Fort 13 in Maine was brought to maximum readiness and its airflights were prepped for sorties and the Rifles Corps on station began moving towards fortifying the Commonwealths American coastline using starstreak manpads, MIM-104F batteries and portable P-700 launchers. Its compliment of long range bombers, airsuperiority aircraft and fighter bombers were on station in the air armed with a mixture of air to air and air to surface missiles. The two AWAC's jets were also both deployed to moniter the northern airspace.

Fort Watchtower in Franz Josef Land, still incomplete took longer to make ready for defence Its compliment of long range bombers, airsuperiority aircraft and fighter bombers were on station in the air armed with a mixture of air to air and air to surface missiles. The two AWAC's jets were also both deployed to act as an overwatch.

Camp Vigo in Espana was a a flurry of activity as the soldiers previously spread out across northern spain began forming into their respective companies and digging in amongst the northern mountains. The aircraft were still in the air over the region waiting for the Irish to change course and heed the collective warning from Athens and the Commonwealth.

The Royal Navy in the Atlantic just off the Northern coast of Portugal deployed its E-2C Hawkeye 2000 's from the two carriers to broaded the fleets radar horizon. The submarines had fanned out to create a ring of steel to protect the fleet from submerged attack, it was prooving difficult as the need to remain hidden themselves took priority. On the surface, the fleets destroyers and frigates deployed their helicopters to begin sweeping overations for ASW countermeasures for an added ring of defence.

With England largly rural or largly urban, small arms were not hard to come by. Hunting rifles, shotguns, air rifles and even handguns could be found across the country if one was to look hard enough, and those were just the licenced weapons. Unlicenced firearms drawrfed the numbers of known weapons held by the public.

With war a great possibility, over two million licenced gun owners in the UK began storing ammunition in vast ammounts in hidden locations such as inside the drywall of houses, under barns and even the lining of a cars interior.

Unlicenced firearms would estimated by the Government to be at around eight million guns spread out across the country behind held by gangs and criminals, these too began stocking up ammunition aswell as usuing their criminal connections to purchase vast ammounts of fertiliser and other ingrediants needed for homemade bomb kits. MI5 knew this was taking place but did nothing, it just may help in the long run, they would deal with it afterwards.

Across England, towns, cities and villages began forming underground militias in the event of invasion.

Across England, the readiness level was lowered. On the ground however a massive under taking was to begin. Plans were being drawn up for a large, heavily fortified static defence network. Whilst most of the time it would be manned with a minimal garrison, in times of great danger it would cause any attacker some problems.

In the air, the aircraft were reduced to just two squadrons from seven, but the AWACs would remain for another 36 hours before returning to their normal patrol patterns.

The miltias in the townships would continue hoarding weapons and ammo, but under military supervision. The home made explosives created by the criminal underground were left in public parka and anon phonecalls were made to local authorities to collect them.

It would seem when faced with such a possibility of war, all peoples of England are willing to work together.

With tensions rising in North America, and through a chain effect, possibly on the borders with the UK the military was placed on Amber alert in England.

Its compliment of long range bombers, air superiority aircraft and fighter bombers were on station in the air armed with a mixture of air to air and air to surface missiles. The two AWAC's jets were also both deployed to moniter the northern airspace.

Fort Watchtower in Franz Josef Land, took longer to make ready for defence Its compliment of long range bombers, airsuperiority aircraft and fighter bombers were on station in the air armed with a mixture of air to air and air to surface missiles. The two AWAC's jets were also both deployed to act as an overwatch.

Svalbard was placed on a medium state of readiness, its garrison began setting up fortified positions aswell as preparing anti air and anti ship defences in the form of starstreak manpads, MIM-104F batteries and portable P-700 launchers.

The Royal Navy in the Atlantic just off the Maine coast deployed its E-2C Hawkeye 2000 's from the two carriers to broaden the fleets radar horizon.

The SKYNET missile defence network was activated and working at full capacity.

With the Chinese missile attack on SAS controlled territory, the King ordered all major civilian population centers to be evacuated. Thousands of ships ranging from ferries to large ocean liners filled the ports around the country as people fled to Svalbard and Franz Josef Land. Others made their way to the nuclear storage shelters in the Pennines, taking whatever provisions they could carry. Whilst largely still incomplete, the deeper chambers would protect them from a nuclear retaliation.

The merchant marine fleets, one right up to twenty four were working round the clock moving civilians, food, water and temporary, static caravans out of England to its many dependancies, and even to Maine. Whilst Svalbard would be Englands fallback point, Maine would be the destination for hundreds of thousands of civilians. This process was in its early stages and would be on going for some time due to the massive backlog of shipping trying to enter and exit ports and harbours.

Prince Harry and Princess Jessica were evacuated to an Undisclosed location in the Germanic Union. Herr Martens would be informed of their arrival and location when they were secured.

The initial panic of the evacuations had passed in the two weeks since the order was given. Harbour masters and naval officials had put in place a system to allow the fast movement of ships in and out of the major port cities of England. Ships were steadily leaving the country, some of them filled with almost 6000 people.

Almost every major city in England had been evacuated completly, with only perhaps 10,000 people left in each, the die hard civilians of the cities.
Not everybody could make it to Svalbard and Franz Josef Land though. Of the thirty two million or so people in England, only estimates of around five million people made it off the mainland, escaping to dependancies, escaping to Maine, and to Germany.

Englands entire fleet of C-5 galaxies were moving static caravans and supplies all over the Commonwealths territories to house the evacuee's.

With England largly rural or largly urban, small arms were not hard to come by. Hunting rifles, shotguns, air rifles and even handguns could be found across the country if one was to look hard enough, and those were just the licenced weapons. Unlicenced firearms dwarfed the numbers of known weapons held by the public.

With war a great possibility, over two million licenced gun owners in England began storing ammunition in vast ammounts in hidden locations such as inside the drywall of houses, under barns and even the lining of a cars interior.

Militias began forming in the towns and other settlements that were not required to be evacuated.

English airpsace was shut to all traffic, including allied. English territorial waters were also closed down, land based RAF attack helicopters would enforce the measure. King Alfred also declared martial law and a dusk-dawn curfew.

War was an all too serious threat at this point in time and Alfred was taking no chance with the UK.
