You can trade with other nations, which will give you their native resources (to add on to your native resources). However, resources do not double up, so let's just say you have Wheat, if you trade with another nation that has Wheat, you won't get the bonus of having the Wheat resource twice.

Did you or your trade partner change colours whilst you had the trade agreement? If the person you're trading with changes team colour, even if they change back to the same colour as you, you won't get the happiness bonus. Try cancelling the trade agreement and re-offering.
