Agostinho Neto
Azerbaijan has deployed more artillery near its volatile sea border with the Caspian Sea, a national daily said today. The number of guns, mostly 76mm artillery pieces, sited on islands and along the coast in the area increased by 20 per cent last months, DailyNews.Az said. The buildup began in early February when Prime Minister Ali Kerimli ordered the fortification of the coast after the collapse of the Republic of Dagestan-Chechnya. Military presence and funding have steadily increased since Dagestan collapsed, leaving Azerbaijan on its own forces in matters of defense. Chairman Heydar Aliyev rolled back his predecessor' fortification policy towards the east, damaging the fish market and trade in the Caspian Sea, a key area to transport goods from Central Asia to Western Europe. Heydar Aliyev said artillery units in the area have also stepped up training, raising into the people the fear of an invasion. "In response to the expansionism in Asia, our military has strengthened its contingency manual to counter possible provocations from the enemy, i hope Azerbaijan's democratic and international fame for its efficiency and rationality will help us use diplomacy as method to settle international disputes, but we wont be unprepared, in case the enemy will look towards Azerbaijan's lead mines" the Chairman told the daily. The paper quoted military sources as saying Azerbaijan now regards artillery as more effective than ships in any border clash. Since the collapse of Dagestan and the de-facto dissolution of the Union of Transcaucasian Republic, the Government of Azerbaijan imposed tight border controls and warned that Azerbaijan may be the next target of expansionist policies. The Government also announces new anti air systems will be developed and deployed around Azerbaijan's key industrial areas.

Agostinho Neto
Altin Urda wonders why Azerbaijan would want to fortify its borders, given that it is surrounded by friends. Because friendly nations can collapse too, and we never know who's gonna come next. Our doctrine says to prepare for war during peace time. Obviously we are talking about the defense of the independence of our democratic Republic, and sovereignty of our people, we have no interest in expanding our territory further, and we must work to defend our people's achievements reached during these months. Azerbaijan is one of the few nations untouched by the wars in Europe and Asia, we have always defended our interests and our economy. Those nations destroyed by the war, will look at our resources, but hopefully they will change their mind infront of our unity and military organization. Lynneth
OOC: Congratulations on 1k posts IC: A wise man once said "By failing to prepare, one prepares to fail". Azerbaijan does prepare and thus ensures that, if the worst case of a friendly nation collapsing or a hostile nation getting access to the Azerbaijan borders does happen, they are prepared to repel the hostiles. Preparation does not mean they don't trust their friends. It merely means that they are capable of seeing that no nation in the world exists forever. That way, perhaps a defense treaty of some kind could be formulated sometimes in the future?
