  1. OK, final stats update as the remaining wars expire after today.

Since most wars are done and rebuilding has begun, I'm not going to bother posting NS or infra stats since those are wonky. Fortunately, Piejonk captured a pretty timely snapshot of the NS portion last week, at least.

Tech is a much stickier stat, though, so that's still of interest. Also, I did actually collect the stats a couple of weeks ago but forgot to post them, so the % change (2 weeks) column should be accurate.

Coalition Alliance Nations Tech % change (2 weeks) % change (overall)
    Hegemony NPO 193 4,574,613 0.36% -21.85%
    Hegemony IRON 135 2,954,814 -1.79% -13.10%
    Herogasm FTW 109 687,748 -1.71% -64.75%
    Hegemony CLAWS 92 918,886 -1.81% -42.57%
    Herogasm The Legion 86 397,842 -1.27% -62.56%
    Herogasm NpO 82 403,110 -7.17% -50.52%
    Herogasm NG 80 238,285 -5.90% -67.40%
    Herogasm NATO 47 336,890 -8.74% -60.57%
    Hegemony GATO 48 601,685 1.44% -5.24%

    Herogasm CRAP 12 156,440 0.70% -3.08%

    Hegemony   787 12,969,746 -0.38% -23.07%
    Herogasm   650 3,904,290 -3.44% -53.86%

Of course, when you start off with a smaller number, loss percentages aren't going to favor you. In terms of raw figures, Hegemony alliances started the war with 16,859,027 tech and Herogasm alliances started with 8,461,220 tech. So, Hegemony lost 3,889,281 tech and Herogasm lost 4,556,930 tech over the course of the war, which is a 17% difference.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to Piejonk for joining this thread and improving upon it. Much appreciated, and happy holidays!

  2. I do think The SDI War is a funny option, but it's kind of specific to a bug that I think only lasted a few weeks.

Also, agreed with whoever said that The Great Awakening is apt but sounds too much like a weird conspiracy theory.

Unfortunately, Herogasm was arguably the most disappointing television episode of the year compared to the hype.

    Love the last two options.

That’s stupid because this is just a popularity contest, and the most popular name will be the one with the most votes. It’s really simple, and I think it’s funny that some people are transparently trying to find ways to avoid one option winning, even though it isn’t even in the lead right now, as of this post.

FL isn't exactly reinventing the wheel here. You might not be familiar with them, but there are a *lot* of arguments against first-past-the-post voting systems, and there are a lot of alternate voting systems used elsewhere (OOC: and even increasingly in the U.S.) as a result.

That said, it's more effort to have a runoff (and a lot more effort to have a ranked-choice voting system or something like that), so given how low the stakes of this vote are, I'm fine with neither of those things happening in practice.

  4. Very fun war! I'm proud of DT for finishing third in net damage, and I'm proud of our allies for what they've accomplished. It was a wonderful feeling to shake off the cobwebs; it's time to leave the retirement home behind us.

Shouting out my top five favorite opponents:

    - Charr (Fark)
    - Codopia (Fark)
    - The Tannhauser Gate (FTW)
    - Wippeli (FTW)
    - lonabis (NATO)

I think you're still missing the big picture. Every alliance came into this knowing their top end would be burned by the Doom/NPO super nations. The damage ratios for those were always going to be lopsided in their favor due to the impact of that kind of tech. However, once they've burned for one or two rounds then the picture changes. After that they are out of reach of the top Doom/NPO nations and can join the larger swarm of RFD nations in the middle. There we have the advantage. Whether you believe that or not right now, the longer this goes on the more abundantly clear it will become.

Nope, I accounted for that in the third bullet point. You've had the (dubious) advantage of your upper-tier nations having been burned down for months. Despite that, the recent net damage changes are still barely in your favor.

Listen, it was the right strategy. Y'all were never going to win the upper-tier battle no matter how cleverly you played it; it was indeed lost from the beginning. By just saying "to heck with it!" and getting them all burned down immediately, it did give you better numbers in the upper-midtier, and you benefitted from that initial sacrifice over the late summer and fall.

However, if your argument that the advantage is growing over time were accurate, then we would expect to see an increasing velocity of net damage improvement for your coalition, right? Well, let's look at the stats:

    • Early September to early October: +268,322
    • Early October to early November: +314,202
    • Early November to early December: +94,701

There's nothing for you to be ashamed of here. You are making gains, after all. But the story of these stats is that you've already maximized your advantage in the upper-midtier, and now those nations are entering the same situation our super-tier nations have been in: not able to do as much in the moment because they're out of or low on targets. It's a success for your coalition, but it's turned out to be a limited one, and not enough to snowball into something greater or eliminate your deficit in any kind of timely manner.

But our objectives, overall?  It's been a resounding success.  We have broken the conventional wisdom of Oculus and Doom holding the whole world hostage, we've proven your bloat and weakness, we've brought activity and excitement to the world, we've exposed the cracks in your now former hegemony.  We've knocked you down from what you assumed was a high place of uncontestable power.  We don't need to obliterate you to have beaten you.

I actually spoke to this point two months ago. Here's the link, for convenience's sake; I don't expect you to have an encyclopedic knowledge of everyone's posts made over the course of the war. The relevant part is the response to Canik.

I agreed then and now that you've accomplished a big objective: the seven-year hegemony was successfully challenged, and we've moved back to a multi-polar world. Personally, I'm proud about the hegemony's endurance over time (Non Grata included, once upon a time), but it's honestly pretty exciting to move into the next phase of this world. Sure, I would've preferred for it to continue, but this is a pretty good alternative.

Anyway, from our perspective, we didn't start this war. So, naturally, we didn't have objectives on day one other than to defend ourselves. Over time, we decided on some objectives. One of them was to win the war in a literal, conventional sense, which the stats demonstrate we've done.

This is a lot like the peace negotiations discussion: just like it's OK and not even particularly surprising that each coalition had different things they wanted out of the peace talks, it's OK and not even particularly surprising that each coalition has different measures of success for the war.

Consequently, It would be as silly for you to deny my contention that the stats mattered to us as it would be for me to deny your contention that your objectives mattered to you. Both can be true at the same time.

  6. 1 hour ago, HeroofTime55 said:

Realtalk, we are winning, but it's not like the old days where winning meant you absolutely obliterated your opponents.

Y'know, I don't really blame you for having a warped perspective about the war; NG has done great. Your net damage for the war is at +2,984,761 NS, which is excellent. The next-best net damage for your coalition is The Legion at +912,533. That's also great, although they've benefitted a bit from NPO agreeing to solo them (despite being on virtually every other front as well) for the sake of RFI and letting Legion get their vengeance for some past grievances. Regardless, they saw an advantage and didn't waste it; good on them.

However, the overall picture isn't as rosy for you. Including the Polar and OBR/OG/CRAP stats in with your coalition, just as you demand, your coalition's net damage is -3,437,243. ...There isn't a plus sign in front of that number.

    • Don't trot out the "of course the net damage is in your favor, you have all the big nations and tech!" argument. It's absurd to make that excuse when you've simultaneously insisted for months that the big nations are Totally Irrelevant Actually.
    • Don't bother with the "well every nation I hit has been terrible and don't even know how to war lolololololol 🤣" bit either; anecdotes aren't meaningful evidence of the overall story. We've all fought people who didn't know or care what they were doing.
    • You could argue that "yeah well we're catching up now that we've dropped out of range of the big nations, which was our plan all along, mwahahahahaha!" There's something to this argument; that was indeed your strategy and you have been cutting into our lead recently. Combining the six stat updates over the past month, you've reduced it by 94,701. Just a little more than 36 weeks to go at the current rate before you've achieved a statistical tie!

Note that, in using the net damage figures, I'm cherrypicking the metric that's most favorable to you. If you're correct that our alliances are so full of inactive bloat, then you should really be running up the score, right? I could just as easily have made some bombastic propaganda post about how dramatically the tech loss percentages favor us, but I didn't need to do that because the raw stats still favor us.

The truth is that it's been a competitive war; you're right that neither side has obliterated the other. The raw stats favor us, but not to a dramatic degree. There are entire NS ranges that your coalition found a foothold in and has largely managed to secure on certain fronts. There's plenty for you to be proud of, and if you're in one of those ranges, I'm sure it does feel like you're winning.

But, we have the stats for a reason, and they don't actually support your propaganda here.

  7. Sauron, I'd like to ask a favor: read my post again. Like, actually read it, don't just get the blood-haze in your eyes because MY ENEMY POSTED SOMETHING GRRRRRR NOW I GOTTA YELL AT 'EM ABOUT IT! 😠😠😠

If you do, you'll see that...

    • I did not say that your note was an official offer by your coalition. I was clear that it was from before the official peace talks began and before you were selected as a coalition rep.
    • I did not say that you preferred a front-specific peace negotiation. I was clear that your preference was for the global white peace that your coalition ultimately proposed during the official talks, but that you had raised the possibility of front-specific peace negotiations as a "logical alternative" if global white peace was not amenable to all parties.

So, we're not actually in disagreement about any detail of what happened. I believe you when you say that it was an off-the-cuff comment, that you were distracted when you said it, and that you had no intention of trying to make an official offer or even the authority to do so in that moment.

Here's the thing: we also entered the peace negotiations in good faith. Like you, we met internally before the official talks started and made some decisions about what we wanted the conclusion of these wars to look like. We knew that your personal statement was not an official offer, but given that it had just been made and that you were then selected as a coalition rep, we figured that our counteroffer could work for both parties, and so we moved forward with the talks.

I can't see inside your head, heart, or internal coalition channels. Consequently, both of us entered the negotiations with extensive information about what our side as a whole wanted and limited information about what the other side as a whole wanted. It turned out that we wanted different things. That's... not really surprising given that we've been at war for months, right? The failure of the initial peace negotiation does not necessarily mean that either party was acting maliciously or was not taking it seriously; we're just not in the same place yet. We'll get there someday, and as you said, we'll all have fun on the journey together.

    -----------------------------------------------

OOC: Sauron, if the basis for your annoyance was that I did not include your full quote, fair enough. There's a lot of kinda/sorta leaks happening here across various parties, but I did not want to post someone else's actual logs. It's because I didn't post your full statement that I was so careful to include the caveats about your preferences and the timeline of events in the first place. It's the same reason why I didn't name you as the person who made the statement.

  8. 1 hour ago, kerschbs said:

That “suggestion” was posted  as an off the cuff comment outside of the official peace talk channel. You have access to both. Once official talks started in the two person capacity our position has been abundantly clear, which you know and is easily verifiable by logs. Not all of RFD had even weighed in at that point.

Lyanna and Devo posted our official position multiple times. It’s pretty straightforward and you’re smart enough to know that.

    Timeline:

    - Before the official peace talks began, a prominent alliance leader in your coalition made that proposal. They were clear that it wasn't their preferred approach compared to what would ultimately become your coalition's proposal, but they called it a logical alternative if both parties weren't amenable to global white peace.

    - Your coalition then promptly selected that person as a representative.

    - They ended up not being available for it, and as you said, their replacement in Lyanna and Devo stated your coalition's position (these are different fronts of one war and only global white peace is acceptable).

    - I stated my coalition's position (there are three different wars and white peace is acceptable for the big one, but we want to hold separate-but-concurrent negotiations for the other two).

    - We each restated our position a few times, and the talks ended at an impasse.

I think Jason's point is that there's a lot of hyperbole in this thread about how insane and terrible we are for believing that our counteroffer would ever even be considered as a possibility, when it had been floated the day before as a logical possibility by someone who appeared from our external perspective to be in your coalition's mainstream of thought, given you selected them as a coalition representative.

Y'all had a right to make your offer; we had a right to refuse it. We had a right to make a counteroffer; y'all had a right to refuse it. The global war continues because both sides continue to have something they feel is worth fighting for.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

OOC: I believe most of us have a shared goal of a more active and engaging game/community.

Obviously there's disagreement about how the game got to this point and whether it was an inevitable decline due to consumer interest changes and lack of design changes + feature updates, or if it's moreso the fault of raiding alliances for driving people away or blocs like Oculus for creating a less dynamic diplomatic environment. My personal belief is that the former is the biggest factor by far, and I remember hearing "this thing is gonna be dead in a year" doomer talk frequently years before Doom or Oculus even existed. However, if you disagree about how to apportion the blame, I won't argue with you; we lack the data to know for certain one way or another.

Despite my beliefs about the cause of this place's decline, I also believe that we still have enough folks here to have fun and make things happen, and maybe to bounce back if we can do that well enough. I even went to our embassy in the NG Discord a few months ago and thanked them for their contributions to making this war, which I think has been highly competitive and interesting compared to past global wars, happen. I would extend the same note to others who were involved.

We can all see that the current conflicts contain the vast, vast majority of the active playerbase. I understand IC debate, and I understand that people are going to cheer their side and boo their opponent. We have all been here long enough to see those things happen in a fun and entertaining manner that spurs further activity and engagement.

What I don't understand is the amount of verbal abuse being thrown around that seems very OOC at its root and that really just amounts to people saying "shut up" or even "quit." It's lame from an IC perspective and counterproductive from an OOC perspective given our shared goal.

To be clear, this OOC note is not directed toward kerschbs, and I don't think it's something that only applies to one group. It's a general observation about this thread and the OWF in general over the past few months.

Now, before y'all say it: "shut up" / "just quit already" / "tl;dr" :)

This is unbalanced too. If you average CCC across the alliance each member has spent close to 100 days in a defensive war (aka heavily in anarchy) and unable to declare wars at all.

Im not sure how you look at it to be honest. I mainly go by the chart on the bottom as I think that’s the most accurate.

Also I was in PM for a week to restock nukes and dropped 25 spots so obviously all of these stats are very inaccurate (joke.)

I agree that offensive wars as a metric of activity has a significant drawback when applied to individual alliances, and I didn't mean to suggest that CCC has been loafing around.

However, I don't think that same issue applies when you're looking at the aggregate coalition-level figures. Ultimately, the coalition that does a better job of staggering their opponent (which is a reasonable marker of activity) earns the ability to declare more offensive wars. That might not be true for individual alliances within the coalition if they're receiving disproportionate attention from the enemy, but that disproportionate attention ought to free up nations elsewhere in the coalition to balance it out.

Incidentally, maybe the best measure would involve some mixture of offensive wars, defensive wars, and aid slot usage %. The aid input should probably be over a span of time, since it's more volatile and a snapshot could be misleading compared to the other two inputs. That would penalize people in peace mode, but they have it coming, and it would probably still be a step up from offensive wars.

Until the dust of the war settles there is every reason to believe you @Sarkin and most of the Hegemony as a whole are only active now because we forced your hand. Our active is natural and constant. Yours is forced and reactionary. This is an important difference.

Also, while we fight for many reasons and varied reasons across our coalition. A significant portion of us do have a goal of increasing activity. Not just this temporary military activity but yes, political activity, activity in general. Meanwhile the goal of the Hegemony is to hold onto power and security despite this stagnating overall CN activity.

In this way it can be said; we fight FOR activity. You fight AGAINST it.

Sometimes, when the sun hangs in the sky just right, I can still see the old Canik buried down there, deep below the well of bitterness. :)

Friend, be happy that your efforts were successful. You've done the thing that others tried and failed to do for seven entire years, almost half the lifespan of this world: climb to the top of the mountain to give us a hard shove. Now we're locked in arms, and the world hangs in the balance.

This is amongst the most closely contested global wars in history. From my perspective, this "temporary military activity" is likely to last for years. We've already seen a political realignment with Polar finally picking a side, which thankfully has neatly separated the treaty web into two competitively sized spheres, each with its own areas of strength. If Oculus wants to hold on to power (and why wouldn't we?), we'll have to work for it. And, by the same token, you'll need to keep your efforts up to finish what you started.

This world may be past saving (folks were saying as much long before Oculus rolled around), but if it has a chance, I think it'll take us both. Now is not the time for cynicism and death cults.

Just one small comment on this (and this is really how I lazily set up this part of the stats) - the general active% average for the coalition is not a good metric, as the average is not weighted by # of nations in each alliance. Therefore one side or the other can/will have a bunch of micros that either increase or lower this stat by quite a bit.

Until I fix that, its better to look at individual alliances and compare, which unfortunately still doesn't tell a full story. For example, ODN is more active than a bunch of other alliances on either side, yet has managed to declare 0 wars in the last few months.

I came up with a different metric to look at alliance activity/participation in the war - the involvement score (which is basically share of wars compared to share of active members of the entire coalition) in the alliance stats I present. Alliances with this score > 1 are basically actively participating in the war, others, not so much.

Oh, yeah, that is a bad aggregate metric then. Thank you for clarifying!

I don't agree with using involvement score as a proxy for activity either, though. Looking through the alliance-by-alliance breakdowns, it's evident that some of the alliances with the highest involvement scores are those who received the most attention from the opposing coalition. For example, looking at your coalition, the three non-micro leaders are CCC (1.99), Fark (1.61), and Sparta (1.58), all of whom are actually underwater in terms of their ratio to offensive and defensive wars (barely for Fark and heavily for CCC and Sparta). I do think the stat makes sense intrinsically and "involvement score" is a good name for it, but an inactive alliance could get hammered and do well according to it. It's not really dependent on the alliance's actual activity.

To my eye, the most relevant metric we currently have for this discussion is offensive wars declared, since that's a very literal "are people active enough to choose to be involved" figure. Our coalition has more nations than yours (826 vs. 697 as of my last count) so that would skew it in our favor, but as your folks have argued ad nauseum, many of our nations literally can't declare offensive wars at the moment due to a lack of targets, which would roughly even out that difference.

Any way you slice it, it's hard to justify the hyperbolic claims about one side being dramatically more active than the other.

  14. 21 minutes ago, TheBigBad said:

It is dead bloc that 75% of it nations do not even know they are at war.

If you didn't realize, your own coalition mate is regularly posting war stats. The latest went up a few hours ago.

Here were the percentages of active nations for each coalition:

    • Us: 67.2%
    • You: 71.5%
    • Difference: 4.3 percentage points in your favor

Here were the offensive wars declared by each coalition (crediting Polar's prior declarations over from us to you):

    • Us: 3,528
    • You: 3,232
    • Difference: 296 declarations in our favor

All this crowing about activity is a little melodramatic.

Here's the truth: your coalition did well pulling together alienated folks and waging a competitive war. The folks involved should feel legitimately proud of that achievement, and credit to them, they were more politically active in recent history. We'll see over the coming years if or how that changes.

However, if we're talking about military activity, based on the actual war stats, the differences are negligible. If you're world-conquering behemoths, so are we. If we're inactive husks, so are you. It's silly to pretend otherwise.

It's been so nice to see old players return over these past few months. I'm not sure about TLR's situation, but kudos to them as well!
