  1. But two of your presidents in a row were. In fact, they plotted together. GPAs actions in accepting Apriland as your leader is a de facto nod of approval to having her in office. As such, your alliance is absolutely responsible for the actions of your leader.

That's true, to a point... but let's review the actual sequence of events:

    - Kurushio -- the person who actually admitted CK/Valid back into GPA -- left the alliance very suddenly, for reasons that aren't worth revisiting here.

    - Sun Wu Kong was Kuru's Vice President. He took over the presidency and stayed in office just long enough to appoint April as VP. Then he, too, quit.

    - April was handed the presidency in much the same way as Gerald Ford -- despite never having been elected to anything.

She took over ~10 days ago and was handed this situation. One of the biggest issues the alliance was facing at the time was the fact that our forums were essentially inoperable. So she allowed the person who was most familiar with the forums to correct the issue... and to his credit, he did an excellent job.

Now, does that justify some of the other problems associated with the act of preserving CK/Valid's secret? I don't know, and I haven't spoken to April as of yet. I don't know how the alliance will respond. I can only hope that we'll be given the time to formulate an actual response before our response is dismissed as lacking.

    EDIT: Typo. Hate those.

  2. Valid was an awful leader, and even a worse diplomat. But aside from that, does an (also in my opinion) unjustified forum post edit/removal warrant a perma-ZI sentence?

Let's not dredge up that whole sequence of events at this point, as it won't do anyone any good.

  3. Created?! Kurushio admitted a nation into the alliance while following the charter, which was his job. Your president is the one that put CK into power. She created the situation.

If I'm not mistaken -- and please correct me if I am -- it was Kurushio who suggested that Valid create a new nation, conceal his true identity, re-apply for admittance into the GPA, and consult on forum operations.

That's how it was explained to me, at least.

  4. If your going to do away with the "bad baggage" you don't go digging in the dump to bring back something rotten.

You accepted someone who was acknowledged to be part of the problem. How can you fix the problem long term if you don't get rid of all the bad parts.

If you try to fix something and use a broken part eventually it will misfire and the whole bag of works come to a halt.

    OCC:

Changing one's name does not change their inherent character.

Again... I'm not seeking to justify what was done. I was responding to a very specific question in saying that the Cereal_Killer character hasn't done anything to offend anyone -- or at least, nothing that I know about.

  5. OOC: Has Valid's new character proved his intentions are similar to the previous character?

OOC: If someone can point to anything Cereal_Killer has done that shows disrespect for NPO or any other alliance or violated neutrality in any way, I'd be eager to see it. Every communication that I've seen from him has been absolutely professional and appropriate.

So far as I know, the only action he's taken in his new persona has been to fix performance issues with the new GPA forums.

It's not like he revealed himself by going rogue on Dilber here... he slipped up by switching to an old IRC nick.

I'm not suggesting that that excuses the deception. I am simply answering the question and saying no, so far as I know Cereal_Killer has not done any of the things that so endeared Valid to Planet Bob.

  6. Seriousely don't blame NATO or any other alliance, you are the ones to blame, either fix it or be fixed

    No one is blaming NATO.

April is merely clarifying the fact that this situation was created by our former president... one that a whole lot of people here in OWF seem to think of very highly.

The fact that he's now a member of NATO has no bearing on that fact.

  7. Technically it is a government position... as the provision for it is in the GPA Officials Law (or some title like that). There is a list of the purposes of every role - the areas of responsibility for each minister and director, etc. CIO is on that list, so it's government.

The distinction being made is that the CIO does not influence government POLICY. The CIO when I was government never posted on Government-only forums because they did not and should not have any influence on decisions or policy. Their role is technical stuff... that's it.

    ^^^ This.

The CIO is the guy in the server room. He doesn't get a vote when the company is deciding policy. He just makes sure everyone gets their e-mail and the printers don't run out of toner.

I don't want to downplay the valid concerns (heh, get it?) that Dilber and others have raised... but I also don't want anyone to have the impression that Valid has been running some sort of shadow presidency. He fixed the forums -- which, as anyone who has visited the GPA forums over the last couple of weeks can attest -- were in dire need of fixing.

EDIT: To respond to Vladimir -- I don't know how The Orders run their forums. This is the way we run our forums. That's where we get the impression that CIO is an OOC position. Obviously, it is an important position to IC operations of the Alliance. But it is administrative/operational, and with no policy-making authority.

  8. Leprecon, question. How is it not a government position when it's a title, and being voted on. Most places I know would call that a government official. If it was strictly OOC, why is it not just an appointment without a title?

    For clarification purposes only:

    - It is not a position with any policy making authority. It is a position with responsibility for keeping the forums and website running.

    - He is not "running" for the position. He was appointed to it by April when the last person to hold that job was promoted to a cabinet position. The vote that is going on right now is to confirm the appointment.

Aside from that, I'm not making any judgments just yet. I think April has been a great president during her short tenure to date... but I didn't know until this morning that Cereal and Valid are the same person.

For what it's worth, I thought Cereal was a tremendously helpful member -- for a new arrival.

  9. No one has ever claimed that representative democracy, as the GPA practices, is the most efficient way of running an alliance.

We don't have the benefit of leadership by long-term rulers like Moo or a stable set of Triumvirs whose word is law.

That's part of what makes the GPA appealing to a wide range of people. But as we're seeing, it can also lead to problems, particularly in times of transition.

  10. Let's call this what it is...

We're talking about an inappropriate action of one member -- who had already decided to leave the Agency.

    One out of 800 plus.

Mickey went rogue. He didn't do it with nukes... he did it with words, and in this case, the words may well have been more damaging. As such, we're dealing with him as we would any other rogue.

And even though we're talking about the action of someone who already had one foot out the door, the new GPA government... which is very new to the job due to recent defections... was able to put together a formal apology, work things out with NATO, and announce this decision in a reasonable amount of time. Certainly, this is a major improvement over the way issues were handled over the last few months. For that, the new government should be commended.

As to the former members of The Agency who have chosen to make comments in this thread alluding to the internal climate of the GPA, I would ask that, out of respect for an alliance that treated you all very well for a long time and contributed to your present growth and standing within the game, that you refrain from re-opening old feuds in this public forum.

    Thank you.

  11. Just attack already, I am bored.

    This.

We've spent, what, months now watching you guys try to goad GPA into a war.

First it was un-neutral statements by Kristin Marie.

    Now it's Valid.

    Enough already.

    Either attack or don't.

Please not that this not a defense of Valid, Kristin Marie, the GPA or anyone else... nor it is an even borderline official position of my current alliance.

  12. I'm confused as to what all the drama is about.

So, someone stole some stuff from GPA, took it to LSF --who accepted it-- before LSF got butt pounded by several alliances in a now-raging war...

Then GPA finds out LSF did this and demands reparations or they will declare war. Of course they can't pay these reps, so war is inevitable; not that it really matter at this point to LSF. Everyone else seems to have their panties in a bunch that GPA would be so audacious as to enact punishment upon a party who wronged them, despite being neutral. So, in the end, GPA wars on LSF (like everyone else) and it doesn't concern any other party.

What exactly is all the drama about, anyway?

Opethian cannot continue to offer observations on these discussions... for he is far too wise.

  13. The other problem with a democracy is that leaders are chosen from a group of people that are willing to serve...

In this case, it seems that Valid was the only willing party.

That doesn't strike me as a ringing endorsement of his... more controversial actions -- assuming that the general membership of the GPA is aware of those actions or the reaction from the NPO or GGA at all. After all... one of the benefits of the GPA is the protection it affords to the nations that prefer not to engage in the politics of the OWF.

As for Valid receiving a plurality in the election -- frankly, I'd be shocked if the election had even 15% participation.

@ Dilber -- I was not aware of this "edited post" issue of which you speak, and was referring only to Valid's impolitic public remark after Overlord Xenu's ouster. I certainly don't mean to minimize the offense you took at that issue -- I simply don't know the details.

  14. He's not the only one holding a grudge in this case. This election was a personal slap in the face to me.

Speaking only as a former member of the GPA with very little knowledge of its inner workings since I left a few months ago... I sincerely doubt that the 1000 or so members of the GPA (or the much smaller percentage of them that actually participated in the most recent election) saw this vote as anything but an affirmation of the skills and ability of someone who -- in my experience -- has served the Agency very well during his tenure, with the exception of one unfortunate and public remark stemming from the IRC incident.

I believe Valid is up to the challenge of restoring the GPA's former standing... and I hope you and Bilrow and any others who have been offended or disappointed by recent events will simply give the new government that chance.
