Headlines for the day:

SNC has received word of a great deal of commotion at Sicily International Airport. According to unnamed sources the airport was shutdown for what officials described as a 'emergency preparedness drill.' As part of this drill the airport was completely shutdown to all air traffic for twelve hours from noon until midnight. Elements of the 14th and 7th Infantry Regiments and the 4th Armored Corps were positioned in a tight cordon around the airport, blocking off all access and shutting down intersections around the airport for six blocks. While our investigators were not able to get close enough to see what was going on in the airport we were told that a number of private, luxury aircraft arrived throughout the afternoon and that a large number of military helicopters could be seen leaving the area. When asked for clarification a military spokesperson said that the arriving aircraft were simulating the arrival of terrorist infiltrators.

Thank goodness our military is training to keep us safe from such threats.

In other news:

Admiral Violetta Abruzzi, Commander of the Admiralty, was present at the commissioning ceremony for five new vessels into the League Navy. Among them were three new destroyers and two new cruisers, more details on the vessels as we receive them.

Our top story:

Our top story today comes from Aphrikan Somalia where President Barack Obama of Carthage delivered a fiery speech denouncing Zargathia for conspiring with pro-fascist elements of the Somalian political scene to try and rig the election to elect the pro-fascist candidate to the Governorship. Zargathia has since issued a brief apology and vowed to cooperate with the Aphrikan authorities in the matter. Steward Jean issued a statement further denouncing the Zargathians and calling for a new round of elections.

A poll by the SNC found that 72% of respondents felt that new elections should probably be held, but wouldn't really care if they weren't. 12% of respondents felt that Aphrike should just control the territory as a Mandate, and the remainder of respondents replied with a combination of 'where is Somalia' and 'hello? who is this? I already told you I didn't want any of your sex toys'

In other news:

We bring you an update to a story we ran recently. The new vessels launched as part of the League Navy are the Assault Destroyers SLS Argonaut, SLS Palermo and the SLS Ajaccio. Also launched were the guided missile cruisers SLS Aegis and SLS Guardian. Design information will be provided as it becomes available.

The League government recently announced a massive military infrastructure upgrade and expansion project to accommodate the growth of the League Navy and Air Force and to update existing military facilities with the latest technologies. Among the defense projects was the construction of SLAB Gharb, a large airbase near Gharb, Maltan Archonate, to accommodate the 7th Air Wing; SLNB Marfa, a new naval base near Marfa, Maltan Archonate. Also being built are two new airfields (SLAB Aosta, SLAB Vittoria) near Messina, Sicilian Archonate

Breaking News:

A network of radio stations calling themselves 'Radio Free Italy' or RFI, have begun broadcasting from a series of recently constructed, high powered radio antennae in the northeast of the Sicilian Archonate. The stated goal of the RFI is to "spread the truth about the abusive Borghese regime and to cut through the lies and propaganda the Italian regime uses to blindfold and drug the Italian people into acquiescence. Italy must be free!" It is not clear who is supporting RFI, when reached for comment the League Under-Director for Communications and Broadcasting said "The League remains firmly committed to the freedom of speech and to the ability of the people of this nation to broadcast whatever material they want over our airwaves so long as the material does not violate the decency statutes. The League neither endorses nor condemns any material broadcast by any citizen of the League."

The Umbrella Coporation is curious as to why the sicilian government allows such radios to slander peaceful nations such as Italy, we know they are facist and the majority of countries do not agree with facism, but the borghese regime has brought prosperity and stability to the country.

wouldnt these means of "propoganda" we shall say, which is what it will seem to be from the italian point of view, be considered sly and underhanded? Also they could cause civil disorder which can cause casualties and damage to the countrys infrastructure?

Breaking News-Update:

After this stations recent coverage of the RFI Story there has been mixed international reaction, with critics such as the Umbrella Corporation demanding to know why the League Government would allow the existence of a radio station that promotes "sly and underhanded" "slander" to exist in this country. The Umbrella Corporation was afraid that the existence of RFI could promote instability, panic, and destruction in Italy. When reached for comment a League spokesman simply reiterated that "The Sicilian League very strongly believes in the right of all citizens to speak freely. If citizens wish to form RFI then we shall allow them, so long as they do not violate this nations decency laws then we shall take no action to support or restrict them in any way. The right to free speech will not be infringed or restricted in this nation simply because the message is unsavory to some people."

Stay tuned to SMC for more information on this developing story.

Today's Top Story:

Early this morning, Steward Jean d'Aosta submitted a request to the Corsican Constituent Assembly to redraw the borders of the Archonate. Under the request the administrative purview of the Archonate would be increased to include the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, including the island of Elba.

In accordance with the League Constitution, any attempts to redraw the boundaries of an established and recognized Archonate must be approved by the Steward and the Constituent Assemblies of the Archonates in question. The request is expected to be passed easily by the Corsican Constituent Assembly.

The League Government also announced changes to the administrative structure of the Italian Mandate. Among the changes is teh division of the mandate into three administrative regions. The Naples Administrative Area (NAA) covers Southern Italy to just North of Pescara. The Special Administrative Area of Tyrol (SAAT) covers the predominantly German speaking area of Bolzano-Bozen. The remainder of the Mandate will be administered through the Peninsular Administrative Area (PAA), based out of Rome.

Today's Top Political Story:

Early this morning Steward Jean d'Aosta met with a group of North Italian political leaders who had expressed interest in establishing some form of independent state on the peninsula. While the exact nature of the talks are unknown at this time we do know that political leaders representing major areas including Rome, Milan and Venice were present at the meeting.

Following the meeting Steward d'Aosta promised a major announcement regarding the status of the Mandate to be made within the coming days. He also called for the Italian people of the peninsula to create regional representative bodies. This signals a major step in the transition of the peninsula from Mandate status to self-determination.

Hans von Anselbach, a leader of the Tyrol nationalist movement, reiterated his organization's demands for a local referendum in South Tyrol to determine the future status of the German-speaking province. Von Ansbach demanded that a referendum on future status for South Tyrol be held before any national or regional refenda on future status. 4,000 Tyroleans protested across Belzano-Bozen in favor of union with the GDR.

Political Story Update:

After weeks of campaigning and debate the results of the referendum vote on the future status of South Tyrol have come in. The referendum asked very few questions and was quite straightforward. People in the province of Belzano-Bozen were asked 'Would you like to become part of the GDR?'

The overwhelming answer to this question was, with 72% agreement, yes, the people of Belzano-Bozen would like to be united with their German speaking brethren in the GDR. Steward d'Aosta welcomed the vote as a correction of a long overlooked border irregularity that had suppressed a long standing desire by the South Tyroleans to be united with their brothers in North Tyrol, now a part of the GDR. Steward d'Aosta said that negotiations would begin as soon as possible with the GDR Chairman Lynneth to discuss transferring teh sovereignty of the province.

In other news, the remaining portion of the Italian Mandate, which was not granted independence a few weeks ago, has been requested by the NAA to form regional legislative councils. Outsiders and analysts see this as a further step towards self-determination for the region. If put to a vote, analysts are divided as to whether they think the region will vote for admission to the Sicilian League or will vote to form their own nation.

World At War- Watch SNC for 24 hour coverage of the War for Iberia

DOMESTIC FRONT UPDATE.... BREAKING NEWS.....

After closed door sessions over the past three days the Sicilian Council of Archons, the deliberative and consultative body composed of the Archons of the six Achonates that functions as the chief judicial body and interpreter of the Constitution, released the following:

After much discussion, review of the facts of the situation at hand and consultation with the history of jurisprudence and Constitutional thought in the League, we have reached the following conclusion about War for Iberia. Before we outline our conclusions it is important to state that this is an advisory document and bears no official weight on the decision making process.

It is the conclusion of this body, comprised of the Archons of the League, duly elected by the people, that the transaction that occurred between Louisiana and Spain is perfectly valid and legal. Given Louisiana's excellent record of human rights there is no basis for opposition to said transaction.

It is also the conclusion of this body that the reasoning used by Scotland and her associates for initiating this war is invalid. This body rejects the idea of the world being divided into distinct geopolitical spheres as out dated in this modern and globalized era. While distinct geopolitical spheres existed at the dawn of recorded history (OOC: The Scramble Threads) when there was little contact between nations, such a time is long past.

This body rejects the idea that certain nations must be barred from certain areas simply because of the cultural identity of said nation. Cultural identity plays no part on the ability of a nation to govern if that nation is modern, culturally accepting, and supportive of civil rights and liberties. Who is allowed to govern a territory should be decided not by what culture the country's leaders come from, but how benevolently and wisely they rule their people. It is the opinion of this body that a despotic Frenchman ruling France would be a greater abomination than a wise and just Australian ruling the same area.

Further, this body concludes that the violations of international law, namely the disregard for the neutrality of nations and the disregard for the sanctity and inviolability of contracts between peoples and nations, show the Scottish and their supporters to be hazards to the continued growth, development, stability, and safety of a globalized world.

Given the aforementioned conclusion this body additionally concludes that this nation has just cause to use all force necessary to aid in restoring the balance of global order in this conflict.

-Approved Unanimously by the Archons of the Sicilian League

Released just yesterday this document has already been adopted as a non-binding resolution in support for war by the Constituent Assemblies of Malta, Sardinia, Catanzaro and Taranto. Debate on similar resolutions in support for war are currently being debated in the Sicilian and Corsican Constituent Assemblies.

World at War-Watch SNC for 24 hour coverage of the War for Iberia

DOMESTIC FRONT UPDATE......BREAKING NEWS.......

The nation is in a state of shock and outrage following the Euzkadi declaration of war against the Italian Federation. Polling by SNC-Media Research found that a full 76% of respondents supported activating the common defence clause of the Italian Stability Agreement and sending our troops to fight on the Iberia Peninsula.

While the Corsican and Sicilian Constituent Assemblies were in the process of debating the adoption of the resolution for war, which had been adopted by the other Assemblies, once word reached the Delegates it is reported that both chambers went into an uproar and that it required a full twenty minutes and the evacuation of the observation galleries before the session could resume. When the Delegates returned, Silvio Antone, the PfP delegate from Messina, expressed the opinion of the Sicilian Assembly when he delivered an excoriating rebuke of the Iberian Pact nations and their reasons for war. After a further 10 minutes of debate both Assemblies voted in near unanimity to adopt the resolution.

With a resolution for war adopted by all six Archonates, the Steward now has the ability to exercise his constitutional powers to declare war and commit Sicilian troops to supporting the Italian Federation.

The League Cartographic Service announced that they had completed their update to the official boundaries of the League following the admission of the Souther Peninsula into the League. While the land boundary was relatively easy to establish given the Italian Stability Agreement which specifies the Federation-League border, the Maritime boundary was the primary focus of their efforts.

After completing an exhaustive study of geological formations as well as economic and transit usage of the maritime areas under review, the LCS has released the following map detailing the Sicilian League's Official Maritime Boundary:

All complaints regarding the findings of the LCS Report should be addressed to the National Affairs Directorate, 1119 League Avenue, Syracuse, Sicily, The Sicilian League

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released their report on teh state of the economy for the 4th quarter of 2009 as well as revisions to GDP reports for the entirety of 2009. The BEA found that the economy contracted at a rate of 2.7% in the 4th Quarter and .9% in the 3rd Quarter. When the GDP figures from the 1st and 2nd Quarters were included, the economy grew in 2009 at a rate of .9%.

The Chairman of the BEA warned that without significant action on the part of the League government to address the rising unemployment rate that GDP would continue to show negative growth into the future.

The League Government released a statement a few hours ago announcing that the economic staff of the League Government would be meeting with representatives of the Archonates to create a plan to restore sustainable economic growth to the economy.
