Captive Georgian Ship Flees Libya, Guided By Stars

09AAF0FB-7383-4696-83D2-1BDBE83D00B7_mw800_mh600_s.jpg

A Georgian-flagged ship whose 10-member crew had been stranded in Libya for nearly 11 months over a business dispute has arrived in Malta after seizing on confusion around the uprising against Muammar Qaddafi to make a break for it, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.

Their escape was guided by the stars because of damage to their navigation equipment. Full Story Here

The shipowners, not the captain or crew, were responsible for the vessel stranding at Misurata as well as the vessel deterioration. The Vasilios N has a rather lengthy inspection/detention record with the Paris MOU over the last 3 years. Captain Anton Kurashvili and his crew are only to be commended. They worked in piss-poor conditions and lived in worse (food shortages etc) while stranded at Misurata. But the owners/agents? They'll neglect and push an old ship on runs between more and more corrupt/lax ports inthil the only thing holding it together is whatever duct tape the crew packed in their own sea bags.

Sadly for the ship (34 years old), a not so distant call may be Alang.

Ah dead recokoning and so many other fun navigational tools. Makes me want summer to roll around so I can start sailing again. :< Kudos to the seamen (sorry, I'm immature... rofl) for dealing with these rather unfortunate conditions... especially if they didn't have an actual star map or reference point to go by.
