You're looking for comestibles in a nuclear landscape or under the budget trying circumstances of peace mode? Mother Ophelia Payne recommends the following. Bacon Pie!

Pre-made Pie Crust for a double crust pie (or make yer own and remember that using lard makes the flakiest best crusts)

1 large baking potato

1 large onion

2 or 3 apples (Rome or other good baking variety)

12-16 oz Bacon Ends and Pieces (these are dirt cheap)

8 Oz Hard Cider (last night's flat leftover Woodchuck works well)

Seasoning (salt, pepper, thyme, dill, whatever)

pre-heat oven to 325 degrees

On a mandoline (or with a knife) cut unpeeled potato, peeled and cored apples, and peeled onion into thin slices.

fit bottom crust into pie pan

place single layer of potatoes on crust and season lightly with thyme, dill, salt, pepper.

place single layer of apples and single layer of onions doing the same for each

cover with single layer of bacon.

repeat process. with potatoes, apple, onion, and bacon.

repeat again if needs be to fill pie pan to just above the rim

Pour hard cider over all

cover with top crust

cut vent in top crust and place pie pan on baking sheet

Bake for appx 1 1/2 hours until crust is golden brown and the innards are sizzling.

Open a fresh cold cider and have while you wait. .

Have another cider with a slice of the hot bacon pie.

leftovers can be nuked for a minute or two to reheat
