“Citing the current instability in neighboring Slavorussia, as well as concern from citizens in Novaya Zemlya and Bely Island about their safety, the Foreign Minister of Vauleyo-Buryatia announced the deployment of a Naval Task Force to remain off the coast of Novaya Zemlya and Bely Island for two months as the situation requires. The Foreign Ministry stressed that this was merely a precautionary measure, and that the Naval Forces would simply perform naval maneuvers unless they were required. When further inquiries were made, the Defense Minister revealed that the government had planned a series of naval maneuvers involving the North Siberian Fleet which was scheduled to occur six months from now. The Defense Minister suggested that the timetable was revised by the naval staff because of recent developments.

Despite this assertion, some believe that the deployment may have also been made to allay the fears of some Novaya Zemlya and Bely Island MPs about the vulnerability of their respective areas in the event of an attack by a foreign power. In response to the announcement, several VDP MPs have claimed that the government has ‘flagrantly violated the Darwin Accords’ signed between the governments of Slavorussia and Vauleyo-Buryatia. The government has dismissed this assertion as ‘absolute rubbish’ and has reiterated that ‘no military forces or military personnel shall set foot on Bely Island’ and has also said that ‘the Darwin Accords do not forbid the positioning of a Naval fleet near to Bely Island, provided that the island itself remains demilitarized’. An MP from the Nationalist Party (UNP) has criticized the government’s decision and suggested that they should simply ‘cancel the sham of a treaty that prevents the deployment of forces on our own sovereign territory’ and should ‘re-evaluate its position carefully on adhering to a treaty that may violate the Vauleyo-Buryatian Constitution’. The government has rebuffed these assertions and has stated that the government of Vauleyo-Buryatia ‘still adheres to the terms laid out in the Darwin Accords and will continue to do so’.”-Reporter
