Attempts to carry out reforms on both the local and regional levels have taken place. Today the Republican Military Government approved the "riforma territoriale" (territorial reform), to restore Italy's historical provincial and regional administrative divisions. The purpose of this reform is: - Cultural level: Promote local history, give more credit to local dialects, traditions and costumes. - Local level: to unite rural communities (Frazioni) or join them to towns (Comuni), - Regional level: To restore historical regions (Regioni) of Italy who find their roots in the administrative divisions of the peninsula during the first Roman Republic. - Provincial level: To restore historical provincial boundaries (Province) of Italy.
