"The United States, as we know it, seems to be no more," said newly elected governor Anthony Sparks. The governor was in Galveston when the attacks in Washington occurred and several different attempts on his life were taken. Ten other governors and countless Federal officials were killed within the span of an hour which signaled that the attacks were very carefully planned and done so far in advance. What is certain is that if there is an acting President of The United States of America, he or she has not a public appearance or statement. The command structure for American military forces is also in question after open conflict between two Army battalions that resulted in a reported three-thousand dead soldiers.

After returning to Austin with his life, Governor Sparks called together his cabinet and immediately declared a State of Emergency in the entire State of Texas which enabled him to deploy the State Guard and Texas National Guard around Texas. The Governor has been in close contact with the base commanders of Federal forts in Texas, and "has so far have no problem keeping the peace and order that we have maintained for two-hundred years," said a State spokesman. In fact, four American warships are docked in Galveston harbor and awaiting contact from the Pentagon. The Governor has offered "refuge" to any and all active-duty American soldiers until they are put back into contact with the Federal military command structure.

The Governor also issued a "Call to Arms for all able-bodied Texans who would like to serve and protect the community and their State." The Texas Autonomy Act has, by definition, made the "Republic of Texas" an independent nation and subsequently quadrupled the current Defense budget. All nineteen-thousand Texas National Guardsmen were called into active duty and are either in their respective bases or have been deployed around the Republic in strategic locations. The Texas State Guard has been acting in a supportive role and assisting the National Guard in patrolling the American and Mexican borders. Governor Sparks said the Texas government intends to raise the Texas Military Forces numbers from about twenty-two thousand to one-hundred and fifty-thousand in the next few months.

The status of the Republic of Texas is in a political limbo right now. The State government is caught in between remaining part of a dysfunctional Union. When asked if Governor Sparks would become the fourth President of Texas, he respectfully declined to answer and encouraged Texans to "go about their daily lives" and "report unusual activity to the Department of Public Safety or the Texas Rangers."

The Governor's Office announced that the Texas Armed Forces have reached well over the previously set goal of two-hundred thousand soldiers. Standard United States military equipment from Fort Bliss, Fort Hood, Fort Sam Houston, and the U.S. Navy's training center at Corpus Christi. The Director of the Department of Public Safety assured the media in a brief press conference that the soldiers "are not being rushed through basic training" and "are being held to a higher standards, higher than the Texas National Guard was even before the catastrophe." The Governor confirmed that the "Republic" will continue to recruit soldiers as long as the the countryside remains in a state of disarray. The Texas Rangers have also been handed a significant boost in funding and are being encouraged to actively recruit more highly qualified members into its ranks.

Troops Return Home From Alaska

Snow_training_400x.jpg

Soldiers of the Texas National Guard and Texas State Guard have returned home in the masses after deployment to Alaska. It didn't take long for Governor Sparks and the Texas Congress to take notice of the increasingly tense situation on what was going on in the westernmost part of the New World. With permission from the congress, four-hundred thousand soldiers were deployed into Alaska and "thankfully" as the Secretary of State put it, not a single shot was fired. This was the first mass deployment of troops - also the first foreign deployment of troops - since the fall of the United States. Vice Admiral Henry Morgan of the Texas Maritime State Guard, who is currently acting as ambassador to the League of Nations, said that, "Although there is room for improvement in how we train our field officers and soldiers, I believe Texas Military Forces did an outstanding job and they all deserve a heroes welcome when returning home." The Admiral was sent as a war-time representative to the League of Nations and is likely to be replaced soon, though he will retain his post in the military.

Soldiers were indeed given a heroes welcome by citizens and by the Governor himself. A short resolution was even written, proposed, and passed by the congress to suspend school for the next three days so that students could reunite with their parents if they were deployed, or "celebrate the return of heroes." To some, however, this celebration was not necessary. "The Japanese are still in Alaska," said Bernie Frale, a political analyst who served under two governors. "While they don't control the entire State, or former State I suppose, they do have the Aleutians and the Alaskan peninsula and that is cause for concern. The Texas people should watch the Japanese carefully as they continue to step on the backs of the weak to make themselves taller." Frale explained that the Japanese have no place in the New World, but if that the Governor was willing to keep them from further expansion in North America then maybe "we can live in harmony," though he noted that is a far fetched notion.

Time will tell whether or not Texas and the rest of the continent will remain at peace, but what is certain is that the Texas Military Forces will be ready to respond to any threat.
