The Federal Government officially created the military of Rhodesia-Nyasaland under the name "Rhodesian Security Forces". At the moment, the only branch of the rhodesian military is the "Rhodesian Army", consisting of the 1st Rhodesian African Rifles regiment. The regiment is composed of indigenous and white rhodesian volunteers alike, under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense presided by William Harper.

Field Marshall John Peter Walls has been appointed Commander in Chief of the Rhodesian Army, while  State President Ian Smith will be the Commander in Chief of the Rhodesian Security forces as a whole. In a statement, Minister of Defence William Harper announced September 26 has been declared a national holiday as "National Armed Forces Day"
